I've got to say, this movie looks pretty damned interesting. They're delving into oft ignored by Hollywood myth, which is nice. I did some reading up on Maui after I saw the teaser trailer, and from what I've seen they did their homework in filling out what little of his background they've shown.
The voice cast (all two of them so far) seem great. The chick does a great job, especially since this seems to be her first role. And who doesn't love Dwayne Johnson? At least, who that isn't a loser.
Visually, it looks stunning. Then again, I'd expect nothing less from Disney. And there's a good bit of humor, as usual. That rooster is going to be a good one, I think.
Anyway, I may actually try to bring my boy to see this. Or, at the least, see if my brother wants to do a trip with us, so he and I can take turns helping with potty breaks and not have to leave any kids alone.

Maui you say? Hope they have a scene where he beats the sun like it owes him money so the days get longer, or that one time he starves his grandmother to death to get her jaw bone.
I do believe there is a scene enacted via his magical tattoos where Maui is shown violating the sun six ways to Sunday.
Jawbone, huh? I never heard of a guy being that desperate to stop a woman from speaking.

I saw this film and it was great!
I loved how they incorporated Maui's "final" legend as it were, and immediately proceeded to Disney it in the same way they did with, say, Hercules - obviously, they knew the story, but kept only the vague family-friendly variant gist, and changed everything else about it.
The entire film, I continuously "Pathfinderized" it in my head, and now I really want to blend this game with a Windwaker expy game. So good!
(I'm actually thinking I'll do a Blue Rose pre-True20/d20-esque rules version, as I think that - with a bit of alignment work - translates the system better, albeit with a tweaked version of Paizo's own mythic rules. Barring that? Druids. Ignore alignment restriction* Druids.)
* A pretty central theme is the struggle between a neutral-to-chaotic good heart and a lawful good society, and how even a chaotic entity can find its place in a properly ordered society.

How were the songs? Frozen-tier? Less? I heard someone say they weren't as good as Tangled's, and that got me worried.
I saw the movie on Friday, it was great.
The music is not frozen tier though I wouldn't say they are bad.
I'd say it entirely depends on the song.
I wonder if they didn't make proper use of their Lin-Manuel.
I don't know - she sounded phenomenal to me.
"Where You Are"
"How Far I'll Go" (and all the reprises thereof, including...)
"I Am Moana" *
... were all absolutely glorious.
Even,
"Tulou Tagaloa" (haunting and wonderful)
"You're Welcome" (the Rock isn't a singer, but it's great in-context)
"We Know the Way"
... were really, really good, as used in the film.
The one piece of music that caused issues with parts of the audience (both my wife and my sister-in-law-in-law**) was:
"Shiny"
... which took them out of the film, a bit. I will totally grant that the song (which was excellently done) was off from the tonality of the film, but I found the particular scene actually better because of that "off-ness" it created - it was meant to be weird, and succeeded spectacularly, for me and my brother-in-law.
I think there was no singular song that will be a breakaway like Let it Go was... but that is mostly because Let it Go is so daggum generic that it fits anywhere, whereas the songs in Moana are perfectly crafted for the film.
Needless to say, spoilers abound with those links - they're the music from the film.
* DAGGUM. THAT SONG. EEEEERRRRRRNNNNNNGGGGGGFFFFF. SO GOOD. *sniff* - no, I don't have tears! That... that's totally my wife! Yeah! >.>
** My brother-in-law's wife. We went on a double date! :D

Spoiler:Is Moana the first Disney Princess to have living parents who survive until the end of the movie? I can't think of any others (and I found it refreshing).
Spoilers!
XD
But yeah, as far as I know, she is. I remembered someone below, and KC added another!
*sniff*
I'm not crying! You're crying!
Q.Q
I also like how, though they (or at least the father) was wrong, he wasn't demonized for it - he was wrong, because his experience told him something, and he loved and cared for his daughter.
Even her grandmother told her to listen to him, but to know who she really was.
I really loved the family aspect, and appreciated how they handled the whole thing.
Oh! I did think of someone! Princess Aurora!
... but we really don't see enough of her mother in that film. We don't see too much of the mother in this one, either, but at least she's an active character that influences Moana and is present in large multiples of scenes.
But the only other character I can think of that has a similar good thing is actually Hercules of all people...
EDIT: Ninja'd! Oh, yeah, good recollection on Mulan, KC!
EDIT: But either way, it makes Moana that much better than so many other films.

Apparently, the key Disney Parent Survival Tip: Stay the f~%! away from your child until the late teens.
With Hercules, I'll grant, it was the adoptive parents instead of the actual divine parents, and they did stay away from middle teens onward, but still.

The songs were better than Tangled's (though that was never a great benchmark, since Tangled is kind of weak as a musical) and about as good as Frozen's, though in a different way. They weren't quite as memorable as songs like Let It Go and the For the First Time In Forever Reprise, but there also weren't any stinkers. One controversial number, though, and you all know which one I'm talking about. ;)
This movie was SHINYYYYY. So good. It might be one of Disney's most solid animated movies ever, right alongside Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. Dare I say, it might even be the best? It's just got some great character arcs, some beautiful songs, and a ton of jaw-dropping beautiful and/or epic moments where my heart just absolutely soared. It's also really hilarious. This is a D&D adventure, through-and-through.
And as a chicken owner, I can confirm: Good chicken jokes. Quality chicken slapstick. A+ use of their chicken. Alan Tudyk has yet to disappoint me in any movie he's appeared in.

Also, I think I wanna get to work on a cavalier/swashbuckler Wayfinder class that combines some limited swashbuckliness with master control over their vessel—expert navigation, using the vessel itself as a weapon, and maybe something like Mounted Combat/teamwork feats for the boat. Obviously pretty much restricted to aquatic campaigns, though.

I pretty much agree with most all of this, though I do put Tangled a head above many films (still admitting it's not the best musical), though I think Aladdin, Lion King, and Hunchback, Zootopia are superior films, compared to The Little Mermaid - but 200% agreement that Beauty and the Beast rivals any of those!
(Actually, if we're looking at the whole of the canon films, I might add a whooooooole lot more - or maybe ~ eight - to my list!)
That said, I absolutely cannot and will not deny that The Little Mermaid gave Disney new life, for which I will be forever grateful.

Yeah, on review, I still like Frozen better—it just takes me to more emotional places—but Moana is a serious contender.
The Little Mermaid has been called the training bra for "the new Disney", but I remain a big fan. I think it might be in the Top Three when it comes to the music. The Lion King is fine, but I think it's waaaaay overrated. I just don't get its hype. It's a great movie, but by the standards of the Disney Renaissance? Eh... *Nervous shrug* Sure.
I'm not trying to turn this into a versus thread. I just like to compare. For instance, for all my love for Frozen over Tangled, I do like Tangled's colors a lot more. I hope Gigantic brings us back to the earthy shades.
Disney is just...it's making so many good movies right now.

The songs grow on you the more you listen -- the wordplay isn't always immediately obvious, but the more you listen to it, the more clever it looks (things like Polynesian words positioned to mean both what they mean, and to mean what their homophones in English mean--the most obvious being the play on Aue, aue! and Away, away!).
I just love that Disney appears to be focused on undoing all of its hoariest tropes lately. Frozen=hahaha "true love" isn't the prince, it's the sister! Moana=platonic friendship 4evs!

Speaking of the songs, I've been listening to this outtake quite a bit over the last few days. It's a stupendous song, though it didn't fit the story they went with.

Movies where parents survive to the end of the film...
Sleeping Beauty
Peter Pan
Pinocchio (depending on whether you consider Gepeto and the blue Fairy his actual parents or not)
Alice in Wonderland
Hercules (I don't think Zeus and Hera bite it)
Mulan (previously mentioned)
I have not gotten to see Moana yet though.

I can respect that. I disagree, but respect it!

Eh, you're not going to get hate from me! Besides, TLM was not a bad film - quite the opposite.
I think TLK is superior to TLM because of a huge swath of reasons (characterization, the reasons behind character actions, and even the concepts found within), but that's my opinion, and it doesn't need to be shared with others.
Frankly, I always thought that TLM was more popular - I never really realized until recently how much TLK was mutually appreciated.
(Also, I love the music. I cannot emphasize that enough.)
I'm not trying to turn this into a versus thread. I just like to compare.
Sure. That's fair.
For instance, for all my love for Frozen over Tangled, I do like Tangled's colors a lot more.
It's funny - I never really thought of the color scheme - I don't know that I have a favorite in that regard.
I hope Gigantic brings us back to the earthy shades.

Very true. I'm enjoying this period a lot.
Also things like Wreck-It Ralph, and other such films.

Agreed - the outtakes are, in general, wonderful, but I entirely understand their absence!

Again, Tangled. Unless you count Gothel. :P
