The Potato Diet Thread!

Off-Topic Discussions

After Penn of "Penn & Teller" lost 100 pounds eating just potatoes, I have decided to start the diet tomorrow. I have bought two bags of potatoes, and they were very inexpensive. I boiled them tonight, and tomorrow I will eat them. I will report my findings on here, and I will finally prove whether or not it really works. You are welcome.

From what I read, he didn't just switch to all potatoes. He only did that for two weeks to reset his sense of taste, so that vegetables would taste better after.

Yes, he did that. I will do that too.

So far at the end of the day I am feeling waves of hunger, but as soon as I take a bite of potato it goes away. I have set my mind on just eating potatoes, and it's a mental thing. I am sure my mind/body is rebelling from the crap I have been eating for a long time. More potatoes...

Perhaps distract yourself by reading Andy Weir's fabulous The Martian.

Hint, there's talk of potatos in there...

I saw the movie and he was able to fertilize the potatoes with human feces. I have no need to read the book now.

I am on Day 2 of the Potato Diet and I discovered that cutting the potato into lots of pieces, and then baking/boiling them, seems to make them edible. Also putting some salt and garlic on them helps too. My body is adjusting to it's new nutritional state. I'm nibbling on a potato now.

Remember, never look a potato directly in the eyes. They do not like that.

Martian potatoes and Martian coffee!! Whoo!!

Loved that book. I've reread it at least four times.

I am finishing day 3 of the potato diet, and like that guy in the Martian I am adjusting. I know why he lost so much weight. Its weird I was feeling some hunger pangs, but then one bite of potato and its gone. Its a strange physical and mental hack. I absolutely understand how Penn Fraser Jillette lost over 100 pounds. I don't feel deprived of food. Okay, enough for today...

Keep up the good work!

I once lost 15 pounds in a few days, but I kind of cheated - my jaw was wired shut. Having my jaw wired for two months taught me that food is for survival, not entertainment. Like you said, it is a mental thing.

You CAN do it!

Fergie, this isn't one of those inspirational, weight loss threads. Its more of a science experiment. The weight loss would be great, but the main point is for me to see if the Potato Diet actually works and what the short and long term affects are to the human body. I am still mostly human, so...

If you eat enough potatoes, you could probably get rid of that flaw.

This is the 4th day of the Potato Diet, and I feel actual physical changes. I don't have a (working) scale here at my home, so I can't tell the weight loss yet. I use a scale off site, and that's good so I am not tempted to check my weight everyday. I feel lighter and it will be fascinating to see the difference.
The whole reason 95% of diets fail is that dieters feel deprived and the hunger becomes overwhelming. So far this is not the case with the Potato Diet. If I am hunger, I eat some potato. However, by it's very nature it's impossible for me to overeat on these potatoes. I am going to have another bite of potato now...

Just make sure you get all your necessary nutrients and vitamins. I think the big danger of some of these diets is that you start lacking in some very necessary things in order to remain healthy.
