Gotta Question About Skype

Technology

I have a friend (a long time gamer in my group who's been away) who's rejoined us, but she has done so by Skype. So far no problems. But then another friend who couldn't make the trip over so he Skyped in. But when he did it, I lost her video feed (but not the audio) completely and could NOT manage to get both of them on the screen at the same time. What did I do wrong?

I'd like to use Google Hangouts or Roll20, but her computer's camera and mic no longer work so she uses her Kindle Fire to join the games. Hangouts and Roll20 won't work on it, so she's stuck using the Kindle, which has been working just fine until last night.

Kindle Fire can't handle Hangouts? It should work on android system (unless the changes made by Amazon were too big).

EDIT: Seems the Amazon deliberately removed access to Google Play on Kindle Fire. It requires some work to install it (and an access to a PC with USB cable to download the required files on the Kindle) :/

Yeah, a friend said it would need to be "side loaded" which is similar to jailbreaking as he described. I doubt she's tech savvy enough to do this and it wouldn't be worth trying if there's any chance that it would screw up her Kindle.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Skype is glitchy and a small bandwidth hiccup can nuke it. We do audio only on our weekly game, and if 1 of us has ping problems, it can force us to go to our backup on discord.

Thanks for the info!

Also, we've noticed that whomever starts the group call bears the largest burden on internet stability. One of our standing rules is whomever is hosting the maptool server cannot be the same one to initiate the Skype call.

Maybe she should use Hangout or Skype on her smartphone, presuming she has access to WIFI.

I'll suggest that to her. Thanks!
