Uh, yeah they do.

No, they don't. It's one of the little oddities of the archetype... that turns into a pretty cool story possibility.

Now, hear me out. The class already addresses the problem of non-lawful good companions.

"More rarely (2)a drake is so inspired by a paladin of Apsu that it chooses to assist the paladin in all her actions. These drake allies see the benefit of a silver champion remaining mobile and understand the powerful threats the champion must face, and in time even consent to serve their chosen paladins as a steed. (1)Silver champions are often concerned by their drake allies’ pragmatic natures, however, and are sure to treat them with respect, knowing that these lesser dragons must constantly be inspired to act on their better natures."

(1) The paladin is going to be the drake's sponsor, in a way, to being good. It is a charge they accept.

(2) The drake must have a personality that finds the paladin inspiring. This can come from an evil character... though not likely from a murderer or someone with very little respect for life. But a thief or someone who is just very greedy could see something in the paladin that makes them wish they were less of what they are and more of what he is. That means they could be evil, but not likely some types of evil.

So, you have a paladin trying to redeem/reform/make better a drake through their deeds. That could be a very compelling story and shouldn't be disallowed just because [evil] is in the alignment... think of it as [evil, but doing better]. The goal would be to knock the drake up to neutral... or do what paladins sometimes have to do if they fail.

I freely admit, though, a player should not pick anything except neutral on the good/evil axis unless they plan on going with this sort of storyline and plan on the drake reaching neutral. As a paladin would not suffer an irredeemable ally for longer than is strictly necessary.

Their code of conduct does say that they can travel with Evil allies if they're trying to redeem them.

Silver Crusade

Hmm

*nods*

I see your point, that does make sense and could make for a great story.

making the drake start out bigger would be a first, maybe medium.

cutting out some of the cost would be helpful but I don't know about it flight and breath right of the bat maybe a free drake power, not everyone wants their drake to fly some like to swim or burrow or something else.

well I guess its all perspective really cause Im planning on building one but i never plan on riding it. and when you get it (lvl 5) it is small so theres a start. and if you take a look at the drake progression, they can have massive damage outputs. But if i would change anything id give it size increases sooner.
