Massive Weapons (Ex)

At 3rd level, a titan mauler becomes skilled in the use of massive weapons looted from her titanic foes.

She can use two-handed weapons meant for creatures one size category larger, but the penalty for doing so is increased by 4. However, the attack roll penalty for using weapons too large for her size is reduced by 1, and this reduction increases by 1 for every three levels beyond 3rd (to a minimum of 0).

This ability replaces trap sense.

Alright.. so. I don't get the second part of the first sentence in the second paragraph. You get a increased penalty of 4. But you also get a reduced penalty of 1. Plus 1 for every 3 levels past 3.

So.... why would this this be any better than just wielding larger weapons... I truly don't get it. I know this archetype was flawed. But I seriously have to be misunderstanding something here.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Because you can't normally wield two-handed large weapons as a medium creature.

You normally cannot wield two-handed weapons of creatures one size category larger since handedness increases by one step every size increase. Large longsword would be a two-handed weapon for a medium sized creature, but a medium sized character with this ability could wield a large greatsword.

Amiri the Iconic Barbarian uses a large bastard sword. Since she's proficient, she can treat it as a large one-handed weapon, so she can use it two-handed at a -2. She cannot use a large greatsword however. If she became a Titan Mauler, she could use her large bastard sword at a -1 penalty, reduced to 0 at level 6. She could also use a large greatsword instead, taking a -3 penalty, reduced to -2 at level 6, -1 at 9, and 0 at 12.

Just to clarify, the penalty is increased by 4, not to 4. It increases the normal penalty for wielding inappropriately sized weapons while using a Large two-handed weapon.

Because Pathfinder hates wielding oversized weapons. Seriously, it's absolutely hostile to the idea. It's just barely possible and even then it's statistically terrible.

Holy shit, that's awful! I thought it could be interesting, if a bit subpar, but damn.

Ugh, martials can't have nice things. The wizard can use the cloud giant wizard's spellbook, but I can't have their sword? Come on Paizo, go to 2nd edition already and fire the wizard-lovers, or at least tell them to share the toys.

A large greatsword that undergoes both a real size increase (say, Enlarge Person) and an effectual size increase (say, Lead Blades) becomes a 6d6 weapon, where it would have been a 4d6 one. So you're getting ~7 damage in exchange for the attack penalty; on a level 12 Titan Mauler you're getting ~7 for -2, which actually makes it better than Power Attack. If a level 12 Titan Mauler uses Improved Vital Strike, they're adding 6d6 dice of damage, which means they're getting ~21 damage for their -2 attack penalty. Things like Gorum's Swordsmanship or Furious Finish or Cleaving Smash just push this stuff further.

I think they are a little paranoid about oversized weapons, but they're looking at the maximum potential for cheesing before setting the bar where it is.

If you're wanting a large weapon on a barb you want to go Titan fighter for a level, it only gets an additional -2 penalty. So that and your barb levels gives you a level 6 titan barb at lv2. You could even still go titan barb and get more reductions if you wanted.

So yeah, titan fighter for the wielding, much better.

Yes, most of the time oversized weapons are terrible, but 1st level Amiri's damage output is ridiculous. Particularly if she gets enlarged.

1st level Crowe's damage is rediculous. Hits far more often for basically as much.
