Acquiring a boon is still optional. Choosing to not acquire a boon is the same as failing to acquire it, in case there are powers that care about that.
Also I'm pretty sure I've read that the app lets you choose to not acquire boons, although the UI for doing that is not very intuitive. I don't have the app so I can't comment as to how truthful that statement is.

Unless they made the change recently (I've been off the app for a few weeks), there is no way in the app to choose not to acquire a boon. The best you can do is use your worst skill.
(See this Obsidian thread for discussion about that.)
I see this as a serious shortcoming in the app. It dilutes your deck, and makes it harder to banish Basic/Elites. I'd bet money this shortcoming is not going to be added to the card game.

You make it sound like a drug. Which, given my pattern of a couple of scenarios before bed each night this week, is not an inaccurate assessment.

I was under the impression that the app has a different mechanism for flushing Basic/Elites than the physical game. Something like a diminishing percentage of those boons/banes showing up as you go further in the ADs. Also, as it turns out 3 of my 4 characters in my main party (Merisiel, Seioni, and Amari) can use junk as fuel, so it doesn't bother me so much. Kyra is somewhat unlikely to acquire useless things, as well.

You're right. I realized after posting I wasn't clear about this.
What I meant was, if we ported this "feature" into the card game, we would have trouble banishing Basic/Elites. The app does use a different mechanism.
It still dilutes your deck, though.
P.S. And yep, the app can be like a drug. I've got a new drug, though. (So to speak).

One that won't make you sick? One that won't make you crash your car, or make you feel three feet thick?
It is optional, but acquiring boons is just so fun, why wouldn't you do it whenever you can? Understandably you'd want to banish Basics and Elites at their proper times, but that is only in the service of getting even better boons later - a little bit of delayed gratification. The best things come to those who wait, and all.

I've been known to pass even on discard-to-explore allies if they didn't fit my strategy in some of my more streamlined decks. XD
But seriously, if you're likely to be healed a lot, it stinks to acquire something that you have a hard time playing (like something that helps acrobatics checks) when it will eventually be something that you draw instead of a card you want.
