That which does not kill a thread, only makes it stronger.

There are other ways to get stronger.

I would watch the heck out of an anime with mustached Nietzche as Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo.

Looks down sadly.

That's not the only thing that falls off...

Here, have some goat placenta and turtle urine, it'll take the edge off.

I'll talk to my agent. In the mean time, why not Strindberg and Helium?

Because, it is better to listen to new age, as we enter this period of enlightenment and quantum locked cats and posts.

Keep it going...

We voting for a Harrison or what? Maybe something about batteries?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Voting for a Harrison, could, in fact, keep this thread alive!
Or... It could kill it, horribly, and tragically...
THE only way to find out would be to try it. OR buy my new book, previously mentioned on Deep 6 FaWtL

I think you did it.

I still think that we should vote a Harrison-Harrison ticket! I mean, those guys had a huge ball! It kept rolling!

... or the Energizer bunny!

I'm just curious if my method for permanent-killing the "immortal" elder mythos creatures using "this one weird trick" will ever get mentioned here on the forums, if it will how long it'll take to devolve into a fanboyish shouting match of, "Nu-uh, Cthulhu is too powerful!" nonsense, or receive a "FAQ" that "clarifies" the idea of, "no actually we never meant that ever, even when we've said that for years" (though mostly it's just to make the elder mythic "truly" immortal again, which is kind of lame).

I mean, in fairness to the mythos creatures, it'd be pretty hard to hit them up with the appropriate effects, what with their high saves and all, but it's still possible. And that makes me secretly smile, enigmatically.

Well, that and mentioning it here, just now.

How does necromancing work in space?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd guess just the same as on-planet.

They made a whole game serious about that after all!

I think it's highly possible that something both Unexpected and Very, Very, Very Bad Indeed would happen should you manage to do that.

That's how I'd play it, anyway.

See, that's the thing.

That's kind of boring.

I mean, it's probably fine in your table, if your players enjoy that kind of thing! That's an individual preference!

But for me, "Oh, no~! Nothing good ever comes from thiiiisssss~!" is the same thing you always get, with a heavy emphasis on, "Everything is pointless!" and "Science is scary!" (though still strongly emphasized this last one is hidden).

It's the same thing with the Tarrasque.

"No, you can't ever kill it, ever. Now shut up." isn't a very interesting or meaningful statement, especially when it's in response to generally clever creativity.

Similarly, I've made the comparison before, Sephiroth from FF7. "No, see, he's totally too powerful and awesome! He'll always be back, and you can't do nothin' about it!"

In all of these cases - every single one -, the answer is, "Uh, yeah, sure, okay, I guess, I'll just smack him to somnolence next time, too. Just like last time. Still not scary."

But then again, I never was one for the whole, "No, this is my thing for me! You can't touch it, you filthy peasants players!" vibe given off by uber-creatures.

Those creatures? They're not scary. They're not even interesting.

Do you want to know what's terrifying?

The Zygomind.

Ho-lee-carp-on-a-stick that thing is an existential crisis waiting to happen to a player.

The Apostate Devil.

My-daggum-word that thing is horrifying.

The Succubus.

Those aren't even that high a CR: they're CRs 18 and 17 and 7, respectively.

What makes them really terrifying is the fact that they're things that are meant for you to oppose. You're supposed to be able to go up to them and win.

The zygomind is everything you'd want in a Mythos-esque creature, and it's far better at it than, you know, the mythos creatures.

The apostate devil is everything you'd ever want in a corruption villain.

The succubus is everything you'd ever want. Er! Der! Uh! Um, I mean... in a political villain. Yes. That is what I meant.

>.>

But see, the thing is, you don't need to go bigger to get terrifying.

And, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with big monsters - not even immortal ones. There are things that "you" (in a generic sense, nonetheless personal to each PC) aren't necessarily supposed to be able to fight, directly.

But by the time you're 20th level, it doesn't matter anymore.

And the continuous treadmill of, "NOPE! Can't do it!" is just... kind of banal, at least to me.

The mythos' creatures "immortality" thing is just silly. It doesn't make a particular amount of sense (even given the works they come from) and their ridiculous stat-block inflation is just off from their own written source material.

Sephiroth isn't scary, guys. He's not even that cool. I mean, he was, once, when he first showed up and even for most of the game. He even has that super-cool chorus and song! But then we became the super-awesome hero and totally wrekt his face with our omnislash! It was awesome! Now when he shows up, it's only ever long enough to be annoying.

What I'm saying is, don't turn mythos creatures, or the Tarrasque, into Sephiroth. Villains need rest at some point, too.

That said, each table has their own preferences. Nothing wrong with that! I just have all this ranting built up from years of watching folks go, "No, that's too clever, and I don't like it. Enjoy getting punished for thinking things through!" - often in a reactionary way without discussing things with their players, first. Often on these very boards...

This.

Which is why, in the campaign I'm currently running and writing, the bbeg at the end is a nigh immortal being.
At the begining there isn't a chance the players could kill him, but at the end they will be able to, but with great difficulty. And it will be a win or universe dies fight.

Recently, police captured what may be the worst serial killer in history. This deranged maniac had been targeting only people who performed religious circumcisions, and it is estimated over the years he has killed as many as a thousand men. He then cooked the bodies of his victims in Chinese style. All of this was, it seems, prompted by a desire to impress a woman. She turned him in to the police after he proclaimed to her:

"I would wok 500 mohels, and I would wok 500 more, just to be the man who wokked 1000 mohels to fall down at your door."

No, it's "conjurer" - C-O-N-J-U-R-E-R - remember, they reclassified all that stuff to be "conjuration" now.
