Which paladin?

Advice

Which race would you choose, Dwarf or Oread, for the New Wisdom based paladin that gets 4 skill points per level, the Tortured Crusader?

Right now for stats I'm thinking of.

Dwarf
18/12/14/8/16/5

Oread
18/12/14/12/16/5

Dwarf based Oread could be a lot of fun. The Oread Earth Glider feat seems really fun later on.

Steel Soul however can make up for the loss of Divine Grace.

It'd be DM fiat, but I personally would allow you to play an oread who takes the Mostly Human variant, but instead of counting as humanoid (dwarf) as well as outsider (native).

Language exists which states the planetouched races can be born of non-humans, but would otherwise mandate the mechanics of the base planetouched race (I believe the exception made in the text was size modifier).

It opens up Dwarf feats, spells, and archetypes. Thematically, you should probably craft your own armor, and that means you can get full plate going a lot sooner than normal, usually by like 1st or 2nd level.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Dwarf. Oread kinda sucks.

I have an affinity for dwarves and I'm a bit anti any geni-kin (call me a racist all you want, I still keep by my word!)

Besides the STR bonus and the natural armor Oreads have very little going for them. Especially the fact that they have 15ft movement in medium or heavy armor sorta kills em for me...

So I'd vote Dwarf but you saw my thread already...and my point buy for a two handed build :)

The oread has one obvious benefit over the dwarf, +2 strength vs +2 constitution. I am much more inclined to want more strength(16+) than more constitution(14 no more).

Oreads lack most of the benefits Dwarves have. they dont have the +2 benefit against spells, or full speed regardless of encumbrance or armor.

Oreads can take the feat I linked and move at full speed in heavy armor.

Scarab Sages

Depends how you intend to build the class.

As mentioned, the Heavy Armor is really going to impair an Oread's speed. But if you plan to be mounted anyway, that doesn't matter much.

There are a handful of defensive racial traits on both races, which could matter if you plan to be a tank paladin. For example, dwarves are strong against spells and poison, while Oreads can get fast healing or AC bonuses.

I especially like the Crystaline form on the Oread, which grants AC bonuses against what is normally a ranged touch attack. Especially useful if planning a high dex paladin (or one of the other classes with high touch AC). The ability also grants a deflect arrows ability on rays, once per day, which is actually a very strong option in terms of defensive Resistance to spells, especially at low level.

Dwarves have the Hardy racial ability, Glory of Old racial trait, and Steel Soul feat.

What do those do? Bonus to any save against a spell, spell-like ability, or poison. Closest equivalent I know of is the Half-orc with Sacred Tattoos alternate racial ability and Fate's Favored trait. Save bonuses, especially against spells are very useful.

Their Class Favored Bonus for Paladins gives them points to concentration checks. Not hard to see how having high concentration benefits any spellcasting you have.
------------
Oread, aside from strength, dont seem so good. they have to take a feat to get Slow and Steady, that dwarves have by default.

I think to make them worthwhile you would need to the Mostly Human alternate racial ability. It lets them be Human for effects, most notably Class favored Bonuses, which Humans often have the best(not in the case of paladins).

But really, what kind of character do you intend to play? looking at raw stats I think you want heavy armor, but what else in terms of playstyle, feats, etc?

Where can I see the rules for this tortured crusader?

It's in Horror Adventures. D20pfsrd will probably have it up in a week or so though.
