Starting items for Darago wizard deck?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Where does it say what items Darago starts with in his deck?

Darago, like most of the class deck characters, doesn't have a pregen or suggested deck. When building your starting deck, you can choose any card that has a B in the upper right corner and the word "basic" in the upper left corner where the other traits are listed. If you don't have enough basic cards from set B, then you may choose any card from set B without the word basic in the corner.

The deck listings in the rulebooks are just suggestions, not mandatory builds. Frankly, many of them are really bad suggestions ...

Mostly that's because they're constrained to not overlap. Plus a number of other design constraints which aren't always aligned with "maximise power level".

Personally I use the default sets a lot, not because they're good but as a way of playing on "hard mode" - at least compared to building your own super-good decks. It also gives you more to look forward to in the early scenarios than if you start with a well-tuned deck.

I tend to do this as well, particularly when I've started B set solo runs to get a feel for the different characters. The starting decks are often a good bit different than what I would have chosen, but in my experience, a lot of the sub-optimal cards are replaced after a scenario or two. Most recently, I started WotR with Seelah, and used her suggested starting deck, only substituting the Paladin Helm for the basic helm in her deck. (Okay, I will admit that card helps her *a lot* in this set). Doing so made cards like the Holy Phylactery attractive, because while I might not keep it over the "best" basic Item, I figured it was more likely to be useful than my Holy Hand Water Grenade.
