Also......top hats don't survive action shots.......ever.And after putting Wonder Woman in a battle skirt, fishnets and panties would be an uproar no studio wants at this point.
Yes, because a swamp man isn't corny and is still totally culturally relevant. Also, I think Constantine the loner private detective who smokes all the time wearing a trenchcoat is as corny and cheesy as it gets. But that's fine for me because superheroes films shouldn't be afraid to be corny, and well, comic booky.
Anyways, I honestly just wished she at least kept the stage magician tuxedo.
The hat getting lost when the action happens is fine by me, but I would have liked to seen her wear it during the talky bits. And I'm fine with losing the fishnets actually.
yes the Top hat is more important than the fishnets.
That hat is like Superman's cape.

Legend tells of a Black Knight...
I'm really rusty on my arthurian mythology wasn't the black knight like Guinevere or something? I feel like Jason should be upset at her.

Oh my god I freaking love that anime. Tony Stark's insane daughter fighting someone whose highly implied to be Superman and Wonder Woman's daughter in an attempt to win the love of an idiot blonde highschool girl, is just stupid enough to go completely overboard and become awesome.
Seriously, why can't Marvel and DC make Project A-Ko their big crossover movie? I need it in my life.
You forgot the part where it was originally a porno that they just decided not to finish animating the sex scenes for.

that's actually not true.
It is true that the company had done porn up till that point but Project A-ko was acctually their attempt to create a non-porn inhouse property that could be more widely marketed.

Seriously? *THAT'S* what people are b+#@+ing about?
Yeesh, DC fanbase has earned their reputation here.
Costume is important, it's more than just a uniform, it's an outgrowth of the character's personality.
Zatana's traditional Top hat and stockings look may seem silly but it honors her father and her background. It shows that she is inspired by her father and is carrying on in his footsteps. That even in death he inspires her. It may be a little silly but it presents a positive mindset.
Goth Zatana's outfit shows an entierly different mindset. This is not a woman who has come to terms with her father's death, nor is she inspired by him. This is the look of someone who is angry, someone who is looking for someone to blame, even if it's herself.
and that is a bad mindset for someone as powerful as Zatana to be in.
wow.
Just. Wow.

however in hindsight I was so focused on finding a picture that backed up my point I failed to give proper consideration on how appropriate it might be for this forum. That was my bad and I appologize for it. I flagged the post myself and asked it be removed.
originally I was looking for a screen shot from an old anime called Project A-Ko. There is a character in that who is basically a spoof of Tony and at one point steals his daughter's bikini battle suit armor.. The picture I found was just sort of "Close enough" after a frustrating amount of time not finding the one I was looking for.
huge mistake as I am a HUGE PROJECT AKO FAN(looking at my dvds right now). I would have just said F!!% YEAH, much like I do to zatannas new look.
Also LOVE her in bombshells...

They definitely retooled it as a mainstream property at some point during production/preproduction, but everything I’ve ever read/heard says that it was originally conceived as an entry in their hentai series (and there are still vestigial elements of that, like B-ko’s bath scene).
(And let me be clear, Project A-Ko is a classic, I’m not trashing on it. I just always thought this was a fun bit of trivia)

Also LOVE her in bombshells...
Most of Bombshells' redesigns are pretty cool... although I remain saddened that I can't find any Miriam Marvel Merch.
As for Zatanna... she has enough cultural currency among geeks that her "classic" look is always going to be there... but this new concept art look is WAAAAAAAAAY better than a design she's actually worn in the comics.
We all know what I'm talking about right?
Oh, wait... I meant this one.
Whoops, no, no, I mean... This one.

The middle one isn't actually that bad as a fairly standard superhero costume kind of thing. (It may also have been the one I was first introduced to her in, which might bias my opinion. Same era at least, I think)
The others are pretty rough, without even the "standard superhero look" excuse. It's hard to say what to do with her costume-wise, honestly. They often seem to want to make her into a goth or something, based on old fishnets, apparently.
(Assuming the JLD movie gets made and she's in it:)
Even if they don't give her the classic look as her main outfit, it would be cool to have a nod to it, with her doing a stage show in some variation on it - top hat and tails, if not the fishnets.

My problem with the proposed look for Zatanna that, as others sensibly pointed out, she looks exactly like Black Alice, who is an entirely different superhero (albeit one who happens to be able to use Zatanna's powers, among others).
It would be like dressing Superman in a red top with golden Ws across it, or Batman in a purple uniform with white crosses. Save for the obvious exception of legacy superheroes (e.g., the various Flashes and Green Lanterns), I don't want to see one superhero look like another one who is supposed to be totally different. (And I would also like it to be possible for Black Alice to show up at some point in the DCEU because while a lesser known character, she is a very interesting one.)
I would also agree she just doesn't look like my idea of Zatanna, but that's more of a feel thing. It's hard for me to explain beyond that.
And Freehold, you're entitled to your opinion, but I've lost all respect for you for coming in here to mock fans, or a "type" of fan, just for having a different POV from you, or different interpretation of a character (especially when said interpretation is stated fairly civilly). Say what you want to see in a character, or politely disagree with a perspective you think is too extreme, but attacking other people just for being a kind of "fan" you don't wanna see is uncool. Ignore them or flag them if you think they're being inappropriate. Attacking others just makes you inappropriate.

Per our private discussion, I did not pick up on the sarcasm at all. I'll be over here. Carry on.

In other news, now I really want Black Alice to show up in the DCEU.

Since there isn't a Batgirl movie-specific thread yet, looks like Whedon is out.
Marc Radle |
The rumor is that he was never actually brought on to do Batgirl. Now that it's come out that Snyder had actually been fired and Whedon was brought in to finish / rework the Justice Justice League, the word is that the whole Batgirl thing was a ploy to get him on set and involved with the Warner Bros. DC camp without raising fan suspicion ...
No idea how much validity there is in that, but that is definitely something that's been coming out lately ...

What I find interesting about that is that Joss has finally made a decision (a CREATIVE one, even!) that even Freehold DM agrees with.
...something something freezing in hell something?
Freehold DM will always agree with Joss Whedon being removed from a project.
