Can the Spell 'Callback' Be Used With An Animal Companion?

Rules Questions

Can the spell Callback (and by extension, Greater Callback) be used with an animal companion? The spell is from Familiar Folio, page 22. The usage of 'familiar' would imply that it can't be used with Animal Companions, but it's a Druid spell (among others) and Druids have Animal Companions, but rarely have familiars.

Here's the text of the spell:

Callback:

Callback (Familiar Folio p 22)
School conjuration (teleportation); Level bard 2, druid 2, sorcerer/wizard 2, witch 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (crushed grasshopper)
Range long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Target your familiar
Duration 10 minutes/level or until expended (see text)
Saving Throw Fortitude negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
If your familiar takes hit point damage while within range of this spell, it immediately teleports to your space after the damage is applied. If it’s killed, its corpse teleports instead. Optionally, you can specify a number of points of damage for your familiar to take before the spell takes effect. Once the familiar has teleported back to you, the spell ends.

Callback, Greater
School conjuration (teleportation); Level bard 5, druid 5, sorcerer/wizard 5, witch 5
Range 1 mile/level
Duration 1 hour/level or until expended
This spell functions as callback, except as noted above.

Scarab Sages

I think no, as it would be rather awkward to have a baby Brontosaurus land on you.

Sczarni

I don't even think the clause in Share Spells (" A druid may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal)") would help in this case.

Scarab Sages

"Target your familiar"
Also, there are in class ways to get a familiar for a druid.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's kinda what I thought, but confirmation is always nice.

Thanks folks!

Awkward and adorable.

Here's the text of the spell:

As it specifically calls out familliars and familliars alone, by RAW, the answer is clearly no. Presumably it's on the druids list for those druids who can take familliars, as any class can, now.

Sczarni

It's on the Bard spell list as well, and they're about as likely as a Druid to have a Familiar.

Grand Lodge

Let's be specific. Yes, the spell can be cast on a druid's animal companion because you can disregard target-type restrictions. But since the effect of the spell, itself, specifically calls out familair, it won't do anything on an animal companion because that's not a targeting restriction.

Sczarni

Familiar is not a [type], as I highlighted up thread.

With the right trick or archetype, which is in the same book as where this spell comes from, ANY class, including Fighters can have familiars now, hence it's inclusion on all those spell lists.

But not Paladin, Ranger, Cleric, Magus, Summoner lists ?
