CotCT or Hell's Rebels

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

I'm about to start prepping a new campaign and I have it boiled down the Curse of the Crimson Throne or Hell's Rebels. Which would you recommend and what are the pros and cons of each.

Both.

You're not going to find a con with either one. I guess Curse of the Crimson Throne isn't out yet, so that might be a con, if you're not big on converting.

I personally prefer Curse of the Crimson Throne, but really, it's like splitting hairs. :-)

They're both amazing, but it comes down to the theme that you want. Both are urban APs which involve some element of rebellion, but the setup is the key difference.

CotCT has the PCs working with the city guard to defend Korvosa from threats, which escalate to world-endangering level. Hell's Rebels has the PCs form an underground resistance movement to rebel against the government. So I'd say if your players err towards lawful, then CotCT will work better than Hell's Rebels.

There's also the choice of late game locations:

Spoiler:
CotCT: massive, spooky, gothic castle
HR: Hell (go figure)

And CotCT seems to have more dungeon crawling than HR, which focuses a bit more on the running of your resistance movement.

Not sure which I prefer yet, I'm trying to decide which to run myself!

Silver Crusade

I haven't read CotCT yet---waiting for the hardcover in September. But you really can't go wrong with Hell's Rebels. The only caveat I have is that I'm not sure the rebellion rules add anything. They're not bad, though, and you can always play without them.

Liberty's Edge

Curse of the Crimson Throne is considered by many to be the best AP of all time. I played it, and just started running Hell's Rebels. So far I'm a bit more keen on CotCT's slightly slower start. It's a hard AP for any to be compared to.

I'm planning both, as well. My HR campaign is unfortunately cursed.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Curse of the Crimson Throne was IMHO the best AP, until Hell's Rebel's came along.

Pretty much.

I will dispute that!

Curse of the Crimson Throne still rates higher.

I love both totally and unreservedly.

Read a synopsis of each and decide which one you'd rather run.

I would strongly recommend Curse of the Crimson Throne.
