Scarab Sages

Finished the new season last night. Some thoughts...

Spoiler:
Hopper as angry/clueless dad was awesome! I wish he'd have kicked that Russian douchebag's ass sooner. It sucked to see him apparently sacrifice his life.

Joyce unleashing angry mom rage was classic. Winona Ryder has done such a great job with that role.

Billy was still an a%%~$*&. Then an evil, possessed a$~*#~@. At least he got to redeem himself somewhat in the end.

I wasn't too keen on them building up a new potential love interest for Steve, only to yank that rug from under him. Still, I like the way they've developed his character as a whole. My two favortie scenes with him were when he tackled and took down that Commie scum guard, then again when he rammed Billy's car with the Todfathr car.

Todfather car was f+~*ing awesome!

I look forward to another season.

Scarab Sages

Finished the new season last night. Some thoughts...

Spoiler:
I think my only real problem was the whole idea of a secret Soviet base. How the hell are Commies going to build a facility that f&&*ing huge, without the U.S. government knowing about it. Shouldn't they have been keeping an eye on things? Especially since there was already an experiment that went hilariously wrong in the same place?

Steve and Robin

Spoiler:

I disagree about Steve's romantic journey. When we first met Steve he's this super suave, sexually successful (for lack of a better description) guy. The overall moral of his story with Robin is in some ways similar to his story with Nancy. In both cases, the reason the relationship failed didn't really have much to do with him. He's had to learn to grow as a person.

By the writers 'taking him down a peg' in this way takes him from idealized male sexual prowess into a more everyman character. He's just a dude living a pretty average life dealing with all these weird situations (the extra-dimensional monsters).

In addition, the show is about friendship, not romantic coupling. Romantic coupling is more likely to be an obstacle in the characters path than a goal by which to measure success. In some ways it would have been weird if Steve and Robin got together in the last 2 episodes. Eleven and Mike started together, and kind of rekindled at the end, but for the most part their relationship was a wedge, not just between them, but for all those in their orbit as well.

Because the show is more about friendship, having their romantic coupling fail AND result in a deeper friendship is exactly what the show is about.

So, what are the chances that Will is asexual?

Regards the ending:

Spoiler:
I think it's clear that Hopper survived and is "the American" in the Kamchatka jail at the end.

How he survived is unclear, but he may have jump through the portal into the Upside Down and then been pulled out through the experiments in Russia, along presumably with the Demogorgon. Although if the Upside Down does match 1:1 with the real world, that's a hell of a long distance.

It's possible and would be interesting. Apart from Varys in GoT, I can't think of another prominent character on a hit show who is asexual. I think they're leaving the door open on that or him being gay.

Scarab Sages

two other things I forgot to mention...

I like Jake Busey as an actor, but thought he was wasted in his role.

The Never Ending Story song had me wanting to jam pencils in my ears.

Will's protestations to change are also representative of a desire to return to the way things were. While his friends have witnessed and experienced trauma, Will has certainly undergone more. His attempt to hold onto a pre-Upside-Down world is his attempt to take himself back to his existence before that evil entered his life. Sexuality could be part of it, but very easily it could just be PTSD. His s3 arc ends with acceptance of change, which is accepting the experiences that have happened to him as being part of his life. He's no longer denying his trauma, and allowing himself to grow after it.

Also, as one of the only unmarried people in my gaming groups, I'm looking forward to the memes and gifs of Will from this season.

Scarab Sages

Read an article this morning talking about new character Robin. I had no clue that chick was the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. Afterwards, though, looking at a picture of her I could totally see a bit of Uma in her face.

I thought Will's reaction to change, especially with his friends becoming interested in girls was simply a pretty realistic representation that kids at that age mature both emotionally and physically at different rates. It's pretty common that in a peer group like that some will become interested in romance before others, and the ones who haven't yet will think they're being dumb for ditching their old fun stuff, until they eventually catch up.

What I was more annoyed by was the implication that D&D was kids stuff, and now that they are older they've outgrown it, and even passed it down to the younger sister who's more age appropriate. Sure lots of kids grow out of RPGs, but I wouldn't have expected that the super-nerds of Stranger Things would have been ones to do so.

I don't think that is what they were saying - after all, only Will gave away his set because he doesn't want to join another party. He clearly says they will just use Mikes set when he comes visiting.

They all say that Wills campaign was cool, it's really just that it isn't their only Thing to care about anymore. One of the pesky realities of life is that growing up you suddenly have multiple interesting Things clashing, but it doesn't mean they'll ditch D&D completely.

I guess it will disappear from the Show, as it has done it's work as storytelling device by now.

Liberty's Edge

They need to have Phobe cates play Suzy's Mom in season 4.

Sovereign Court

There has definitely been a departure in overall tone of the series from season 1 to 3. There has been a lot of campy story elements and caricatured characters recently. Despite that, its still a well executed and enjoyable series. Few, if any, series can survive this type of transformation.

Liberty's Edge

We're not in Hawkins anymore.

Can't wait.
