Tattooed Dragon Disciple

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Dark Archive

So I'm thinking of trying to make a Tattooed Sorcerer Dragon Disciple. Now, I know that I lose the claws, but I was also thinking of picking up Eldritch Heritage with Ghoul to combat this...

Now I know that this isn't optimal.. But do you guys think it is manageable?

So let me be the first to ask.

Why?

You already know this isn't going to be very good. Tattooed does not make it any better since you can't pick a bloodline to complement it (since you have to choose Draconic). Also, in theory you'd lose the breath weapon completely, even when it tries to give it to you in Dragon Disciple. Everything's possible with an accommodating enough GM and a party that doesn't mind, but you're already picking a low-power option... and then downgrading it

How would I lose the breath weapon completely? From what I see all I'd lose is one use per day.

Part of the reason I want to is fluffyness, the other is that I like the options that Tattooed give me in regards to the magic tattoos and the familiar.

Enhanced Magical Tattoo replaces the 9th level bloodline power.

At 3rd level, a dragon disciple gains the breath weapon bloodline power, even if his level does not yet grant that power. Once his level is high enough to grant this ability through the bloodline, the dragon disciple gains an additional use of his breath weapon each day. The type and shape of the breath weapon depends on the type of dragon selected by the dragon disciple, as detailed under the Draconic sorcerer bloodline description.

Your level can never grant you the bloodline power. Period. You traded it away.

If you just want a familiar, anyone with a bloodline can do that.

Bloodline Familiar wrote:

Those with an inherent connection to magic often attract creatures who feel a similar instinctive pull toward magical forces. At 1st level, a sorcerer, bloodrager, or any other character with one of the following bloodlines can choose to gain a bloodline familiar. The character gains a familiar (as a wizard's familiar), treating her class level as her wizard level for the purposes of this ability. This familiar has an additional ability listed below based on the master's bloodline.

This replaces the 1st-level bloodline power granted by the character's bloodline; in addition, the character gains bonus spells from her bloodline one level later than she normally would. For example, a sorcerer with the aberrant bloodline who takes a bloodline familiar would not gain the acidic ray bloodline power, and she would gain her first bonus spell at 4th level, her second bonus spell at 6th level, and so on.

I was actually not aware of that. So.. Assuming that I go with that to get a familiar instead of tattooed sorcerer, I still want claws...

Would Eldritch heritage: Ghoul be the best way to go about getting them?

I guess? There's like a dozen ways to gain claws at the moment. Most are level dips or racial, I think your idea is the only purely feat based one (Aspect of the Beast requires ranger or druid levels). Also the only one that would work with Dragon Disciple, if any of them do. Again, this brings up a weird rules interaction because Dragon Disciple is clearly written assuming you didn't trade anything out. So:

Dragon Bite wrote:
At 2nd level, whenever the dragon disciple uses his bloodline to grow claws

Does this require the Draconic bloodline claws? Does it allow other bloodlines? Could you dip a level of Bloodrager and use those claws? It's very ambiguous and complicated.

Oh, and here's the link to bloodline familiars, because the Draconic one would also get:

Dragon's Flight (Ex) wrote:
The familiar can sprout draconic wings, granting it a fly speed of 30 feet with average maneuverability for a number of minutes per day equal to 1/2 your caster level (minimum 1). These minutes need not be consecutive, but they must be spent in 1-minute increments. At 10th level, the familiar's fly speed increases to 60 feet with good maneuverability. At 20th level, the familiar's fly speed increases to 90 feet.

Would Eldritch heritage: Ghoul be the best way to go about getting them?

Wouldn't it be easier to just keep the claws from Draconic and take Eldritch Heritage (Arcane) to get a Familiar?

so then... do non-sorcerers who qualify for dragon disciple also not get breath weapons?

They do. Consider a Bard 5/Dragon Disciple 10. Three levels in DD grants 1 use per day. But the DD levels count as Sorcerer levels for progressing the Bloodline Powers so the character will get a second use per day at level 14 when he gets the 9th level Bloodline Power.

Combining the DD abilities with the bloodline abilities it would look like this.

Bard 1-5
DD1: Claws (1d4), Blood of Dragons, Natural Armor Increase +1
DD2: Ability Boost (Str +2), Bloodline Feat, Dragon Bite (1d6)
DD3: Breath Weapon (+1/day), Resist Energy 5, Natural Armor of +1
DD4: Ability Boost (Str +2), Natural Armor Increase +1
DD5: Blindsense 30 ft., Bloodline Feat, Claws (Magic)
DD6: Ability Boost (Con +2), Dragon Bite (1d6 energy)
DD7: Dragon Form (1/day as Form of the Dragon II), Natural Armor Increase +1, Claws (1d6)
DD8: Ability Boost (Int +2), Bloodline Feat
DD9: Wings, Resist Energy 10, Natural Armor of +2, Breath Weapon (+1/day)
DD10: Blindsense 60 ft., Dragon Form (2/day as Form of the Dragon II)

Parts in italics are the Bloodline Powers gained though Blood of Dragons.

Stacking can be complicated. You get a total Natural Armor of +2. If you have NA from another source then they do not stack, but you also get a +3 increase that affects whichever one is your highest NA bonus. You also get a Breath Weapon that can be used 2 times per day, and total ability increases of +4 Str, +2 Con, and +2 Int.

oh right. i forgot that non-sorcerers are basically given the bloodline.

Only the Bloodline Powers. No Bloodline Arcana, Bonus Feats, or Bonus Spells, and they don't qualify for things that require a Bloodline.
