pre-Punic Wars Mediterranean redone as an E6 fantasy setting

Homebrew and House Rules

I recently had an idea to build a fantasy setting heavily based off of the Mediterranean in the time period between the death of Alexander the great and the rise of Rome.

Rome would probably be a human centric republic, other major powers of the time could be other core/ bestiary 1 races. Other ideas at this stage are the gauls as orcs and Greeks as dwarves.

Keeping it E/P6 would allow magic to play a part without completely dominating the setting.

Does this interest anyone as something they think would be worth working on?

I think this could be interesting, particularly as an alternative Earth.

When, exactly, are you planning for this to take place?

The period of time between the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) and the Battle of Actium (31 BC) is known as the Hellenistic Period. This period is when Greek civilization was at its most powerful.

However, the Punic Wars took place during 264–146 BC while the Roman Republic existed from 509–27 BC. So I'm assuming the time period you mean is between 323 and 264 BC (a period of 59 years).

This map shows the powers around at the beginning of that time period while this map shows what it looks like in 200 BC (I found the maps here and there aren't any closer to 264 currently).

Races, I think, are going to be trickier. You'll probably want to consider where it might make the most sense to have them come from (the Greeks as Dwarves instead of the Gauls would certainly be different, but given where they live it probably means that the area near Greece is dominated by Dwarves). The main issue with most of the other races is they tend to live much longer times than humans so unless they're particularly short-lived (read: a variant on base humans) some of them are going to have very long memories and will try to build societies that last as long as they do. This isn't too tricky, but it might mean some places are more homogeneous than they usually are or even more stable/powerful than they were historically. I don't think it would be a good idea to try to recreate history exactly or to try and force things in a familiar direction.

Similarly, even e6 magic is more magic than the real world has and is going to influence things in various ways. So too will having real deities running around. You could have all deities be real, but that's going to be a pretty crowded pantheon.

Wasn't expecting this to get any attention at this point, still good to see someone else likes this idea.

The aim is to be inspired by the rough time period not perfectly mimic.

I have made this rough map of where various races mostly live.

Obviously magic will have an impact. But if you are interested in working on the setting let me know and we can figure something out.

Somehow I didn't see it until now. I hope more people will become interested.

Sure.

Thanks for the link, it looks useful but a little to close to a direct conversion of greek myths to d20 for what I am looking for.
