Cybernetics or Nanobots?

It's the classic SciFi-Fantasy question - whether it is better to replace your weak flesh-bits with chrome enhancements, or shore up the organic machine with boosting nano-tec.

I'm betting we'll see both, but it is always interesting to see which way the setting leans.

Starfinder Superscriber

I really hope that both options are in there. I love having the choice of which to use.

Both please. let me have full limb replacements with their own nano repair systems so that i dont even need to come in for a tune up.

Screw it, I'd rather have bioware instead, only using cyber- and nano-wear for upgrades bioware can't satisfactorily provide.

Or use generic "replacement limb type XYZ" that just have costs and stats and can be up to Player and GM to decide how they work, nano, cyber, bio, force field, graft, steampunk, magi-tech, whatever. kitchen sink it. ;P

I will go to Vallhalla, Shiny and Chrome!

*Rubs chin* You know, that could be a pretty good built-in leveling system, like ABP. Like, a strength upgrade could be focusing nanomachines into your muscles for strength, Constitution would put them into your bones, Charisma would have it actually reconfigure your physical appearance and/or voice... I could dig it. XD Maybe give each class a progression system? (So physical-oriented classes would get physical upgrades earlier, etc.)

Nanomachines, the wizardry of the future!

This is an easy question! Nanomachines, son!

Having played & GMed Shadowrun, there are a lot of horrifying offensive uses for nanomachines too.

Why are flesh-beings so attached to their squishy bits? The machine age has dawned! Convert, unfaithful, or be left behind in the technological ascendancy!

What about genetically enhanced implantation? No love for space marines?

I'm hoping cybernetics and biologics

Actual nanobots are just fancy drugs. Nanobots as they are envisioned in sci-fi are unlikely. Artificial cells that cross communicate and differentiate with guidance are far more likely. The true ideal of nanobots that we see in sci-fi requires SUPER tech with quantum space bending powers micro nuclear physics and chemistry.

If starfinder is not a post-scarcity setting, then I think fancy cybernetics would be best with biologics doing more invisible work like regeneration and physical enhancement.

Both.

Nanobots are actually millions of super tiny wizards. Pointy hats and everything.

Both as well as some sort of genetic/biotech modification. Unless there is some lore-based reason, it makes more sense to at least acknowledge all three then to ignore any of them.

Maybe there will be faction and racial preferences for different tech types (dwarf and Orc prefer the blunt strength and dependability of cybernetics, some faiths will only use organic replacements, humans are keen on how new and exciting nanobots are etc.)

I am now considering the possibilities of a Druid maintaining personal Bioware, or possibly having a companion nanite cloud.

Plantlike symbiote companion for low Oxygen atmospheres?

Personal eco-suit of photo- and chemo- synthesizing commensals?

Companion cybernetically enhanced lifeform?

'Dat synthesist eidolon...

I've made a character like that. XD It was an android, with the Eidolon flavored as a nano-suit they could call up.

I'm not sure how the final version will change because of Starfinder, but there is a symbiont lifesuit (plant) in the Aethera preview. It's only a 2d8 CR 1, but maybe with some work it can be expanded to improve along either a familiar or animal companion progression?

Cybernetics, Nanotechnology and Biotech. :)

Alternity and D20 Future is a good starting point as a reference for all the cool options and ideas this can add to a Sci-Fi/Sci-Fa game. :)
