That said, I'm excited about this season, and am curious about the ultimate survival of Shiro.
Welp! Finished!
I'm wondering if Shiro didn't do what Zarkon mentioned, briefly, in episode 7, Space Mall, and actually took over Zarkon's body (or tried to) - kind of similar to what Sendak did to the castle in S1:E9, "Crystal Venom" - but it's going to take a while to manifest.
Basically, body/mind/spirit/memories corruption/transference has been implied enough times that it's kind of similar to a Chekov's gun (or, perhaps, red herring) at this point.
Reference Belabras' spoilers:
I'm wondering if Allura doesn't become a pilot. Not traditional, I know, but she is often in at least a bit of a "hot-headed" role - similar to Keith - as she tends to be fiery and passionate and outspoken. Another possibility is Coran, as it was briefly teased this season in "The Blade of Mamora" when he tries to become red pilot (though that was mostly for humor, sssssooooo... maybe not?), and I'm unsure if we have enough information on that Galra from "Belly of the Weblum" could be reintroduced after only being seen once... though it could be interesting, I admit!
Weirdly, I'm also curiously compelled by Hunk's saga as a SpaceMall Chef - along with Sal's vow to have him work for him again, I could actually see what was basically a one-off joke being a recurring thing (at least once).
So awesome!
I love how hardcore awesome Allura was!

3 episodes in. Enjoying it a lot. Missing Shiro but the new pilot set up is fun.
Lotor is...interesting. He's smart, couragous, almost honorable, good at recognizing the value of individuals while ignoring inherrant racial predjudices. Good at inspiring people as well, also seems to realize and empire held together by fear can't stand.
That said he's still got a ruthless streak and is a bit of a bastard behind closed doors.

7 episodes does not seem like enough.
Loved the background on Honerva and Zarkon. Prince Lotor and his ladies aren't bad either.
One complaint - for all that he is technically team leader now, Keith still seems like a one note character at best.
I still can't tell Keith and Lance (?) apart.

It's almost like they could replace Keith with Shiro and no one would care. Funny that.
Unless they are going to seriously develop the Keith + Blade of Marmora storyline, I really don't see why they keep him around.

Just finished watching this myself (yes, I know, late to the party). I have to agree that Keith's character development is lacking, and surprised they brought Shiro back so quickly. Would've been more interesting and more of a cliff hanger if they waited until next season to bring him back. It would've allowed more development of Keith's character.
As for keeping Keith around, he was always the black lion pilot in the original series. They've even kept the same color uniforms as they did back then. Allura wears pink, pilots blue; Lance wears blue, pilots red; and Keith wears red, pilots black. Shiro / Sven wear/wore black, both were replaced by Keith.

Still waiting on more Robeasts...
This...
I think they went WAY too far with the 'slow burn' concept here. what was it? 3 seasons before They had the classic pilots driving their classic lions... and then in the 4th keith was demoted again AND I believe ZERO Robeasts that 'whole' season?
There's a lot of potential with this show... but it really doesn't feel like 'Voltron' yet. Just a whole bunch of buildup promising to EVENTUALLY get to the 'Voltron you remember'...

Do we really need/want a Robeast of the week show? Personally I prefer the more story driven setup.
AGREED. I have my issues with the new show but if someone wants Robeast of the week then the original show is available on DVD in both the BEAST KING GOLION version and VOLTRON versions.
The show is still clearly a Voltron show without the Robeast of the week and honestly, even when I was watching it as a kid I thought it was formulaic and kind of stupid.

IT felt super short. I feel they kind of rushed a bit too. They used a few tricks to make the episodes seems longer and draw it out a bit plus the still frame shots that were cool but is a great way to save your budget. (that and all the voltron transformations which is a great way to burn through time.)

I enjoyed. I feel like they are building to something. What, I don't know.
I really think Lotor's going to get Allura to use Altean Alchemy to bring life to his 3-part combiner, and then either double-cross or fall-out with the Paladins, leading to a massive combiner-on-combiner fight in the skies over the shattered corpse of the Galra homeworld.
At least, that's what I'd do.
