How can magical beasts gain speech?

Advice

I'm wanting to take leadership to give my cavalier a giant eagle for a mount and I don't want it to be just a flying replacement for the horse;I want him to be a character of his own. I can't find anyway for the two of us to understand each other though and I can't find a thread where this has been addressed.

Giant eagle understands Auran language, you can spend single skill rank in Linguistics to learn that language so you will be able to communicate with your cohort. It won't be able to respond, though.

With the help of spells such as telepathic bond you could possibly communicate both ways.

Silver Crusade

Sadly he won't be able to speak. However, in addition to automatically understanding Auran as the base giant eagle, any creature with an intelligence of 3 or higher can put ranks into any skill--that includes linguistics, which can be used to understand more languages.

Typically, most animals and magical beasts are physically unable to speak unless it says otherwise.

Unfortunately no one in my party can cast telepathic bond. If at all possible I'd like it if he could actually speak seeing as how his perception skill will be much higher than mine and could warn the group of danger.

Invest in Linguistic, learn Auran so the eagle will understand you, then proceed to develop a set of signals which it could use to communicate simple ideas.

"Two short cries followed by a long cry, followed by two short cries means the enemies ahead: and so and so on. Possibly with some gestures as well... (eagle crying while it hides its head under the left wing means "no/wrong")

Unless you are playing PFS (where it won't work) you could ask your GM about possibility of either using Circlet Of Speaking or finding a magic item crafter capable of making an analogous item for magical beasts.

How about buying a ring of eloquence for your eagle, and a hand of glory to put it on?

While the Ring of Eloquence would work, the Hand of Glory wouldn't be necessary; avians already have ring slots.

You and the giant eagle could both have the Bonded Mind teamwork feat?

Huh. So they do.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think the ring of eloquence is my best shot and we have a guy who can craft it as well. Its a shame there is no equivalent of awaken for magical beasts. I find it odd that you can make a intelligent talking cow but the multitude of already sentient beasts cant talk without wearing a special item.

Falcon and Redwing manage to communicate to each other quite effectively without speech.

Talking is overrated.

Are you sure you want to give him speech? He might sound like this.

That is actually a great idea. Sam the eagle is totally going to be my inspiration now.
