Spellstrike two-handed.

Rules Questions

In the title.

You must have 1 hand free when using spell combat. This, however, is not a restriction present in the text of spellstrike.

Thus, it seems to me that you could cast a touch spell, switch to a two-handed grip as a free action, perhaps make a move action or a 5-ft. step, and then use a free action to deliver the free attack from your spell.

Ignoring the ineffectiveness of this tactic in comparison to full-attacks, is there anything keeping me from doing that?

Nope, it's a perfectly valid technique.

Perfectly legit.

Remember you can hold the charge on a touch spell indefinitely. Cast it before combat and then start Vital Stike/Spellstriking people.

While the idea is certainly interesting, this feels very much too niche to spend feats on. Especially considering that I could just cast it before combat, and then expend it in a full attack.

I'd be making 1 vital strike per combat. That really isn't worth spending 1 to 2 feats on. Especially since they're not that good on their own.

Maybe not, but Improved Critical is definitely worth it.

Note: Spellstrike with a two-handed weapon can be done with a reach weapon as well, and this had the added benefit of removing that pesky combat casting dice roll. Spellstriking with Improved Critical and a Bardiche or Fauchard (15-20 crit range!) is definitely worth it.

Now that I can get behind.

I might try to run that as a magus build.

Vital Strike specifically requires the Attack Action. Delivering a Touch Spell is a special Free Action, not an Attack Action, so no go on Vital Strike.

Delivering a touch spell in the round it was cast is a free action. If you are holding the charge you can use any action available to deliver it.

I mean sure it works, but a magus without spell combat is rather mediocre, no more buffing yourself and attacking, no more using bladed dash or dimension door to instantly close gaps and full attack as though you had pounce. If you can wait until 11th level you'd be better off playing a bloodrager with magus VMC, you get your spellstrike with two handed attacks on a class where wielding a two hander is actually a good idea.

Yes, but I'm saying you can't cast the spell and then Vital Strike in the same round, and is the same reason a spell like True Strike is pretty crappy.

True strike is a great spell, provided you are using spell combat and need a +20.

True, but that was not the scenario you replied to.
