Summoned monsters and their spells

Rules Questions

Is there any known way to enable spells cast by summoned creatures to last the described duration rather than cease when the summoned creature expires?

Nope. Might have some luck with 3rd party sources.

bribe the GM? it's unreliable and costly, but has been known to work on occasion.

Nope. That'd result in some problems, like allowing possession by a creature after its returned to its home plane.

Well poo!

I was thinking more along the lines of wall spells, buffs, stuff like that. I would imagine the thinking being if you allow it for one then you have to allow it for all...but I'm not really seeing Possession as an issue. Once the summoned creature is gone, even if the possession spell was still going, the target would be free as there is nothing possessing it. Just off the top of me head.

I would argue spells with a duration of Instantaneous stay. It says spells expire, which implies to me the duration runs out; if there is no duration, there is nothing to expire.

For example, if a summoned creature casts cure light wounds, does it "expire" when they leave and the wounds return? I do not think too many people would argue that is the case. Following this logic, a Wall of Force would expire, whereas a Wall of Stone would not.

Instantaneous spell effects would indeed remain. The spells themselves expire as soon as they're cast.

An interesting grey area are the ones are with a duration of Permanent.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not grey at all. They would expire, much as though they were dispelled.

Not sure I agree; hence, grey. :)

By it's definition, it does not expire. It does not say dispelled.

If it can be dispelled, it goes away when the summon goes away.

As to making it last, I would suggest a Ring of Spell Storing.
