Damage and wielding a two-handed weapon one-handed

Rules Questions

So, I'm working on a cavalier and will of course be using a lance, and while I was looking around about how to calculate damage I came across this bit in the FAQ:

"Power Attack: If I am using a two-handed weapon with one hand (such as a lance while mounted), do still I get the +50% damage for using a two-handed weapon?

Yes."

So it got me thinking, because I GMed a few times and have ruled that a two-handed weapon wielded in one hand only gets the basic one handed benefits. This lead me to look into that, because I was sure that was the case, and behold, in the same FAQ:

"Weapons, Two-Handed in One Hand: When a feat or other special ability says to treat a weapon that is normally wielded in two hands as a one handed weapon, does it get treated as one or two handed weapon for the purposes of how to apply the Strength modifier or the Power Attack feat?

If you're wielding it in one hand (even if it is normally a two-handed weapon), treat it as a one-handed weapon for the purpose of how much Strength to apply, the Power Attack damage bonus, and so on."

So... Which one is it?

Either way works for me, but for obvious reasons, if I can get more damage out of my attacks I'd like that.

Thanks for the help!

Really it's only going to be for the Lance while mounted which is kind of a special case. Lance? Add it up. Others? One hand bonuses.

Okay, but the first FAQ I posted says "such as a lance while mounted" which is purely an example. And the second says "if you're wielding in one hand (even if it is normally a two-handed weapon)..." and goes to explain it gets regular Power Attack damage.

So, lets say I have 16 STR, mounted and power attack with my lance...

Do I get get:

A) 1d8 + 3 (STR) + 2 (PA)
B) 1d8 + 4 (STR at 1.5x) + 3 (PA at 1.5x)
or
C) 1d8 + 3 (STR) + 3 (PA at 1.5x)

Some of the above.

X1.5 +3 when mounted
X1 + 3 when not

Here's the description of a lance.

Benefit: A lance deals double damage when used from the back of a charging mount. While mounted, you can wield a lance with one hand.

Basically it's saying treat this as a two handed weapon while youre mounted. If you're not, adjust.

It's more to do with the weapon itself than the feats you're adding in. The wording is weak. It's in many cases unclear or conflicting. But using a lance two handed while mounted is ridiculous, the game adjusted to fit the theme and so should you.

The Lance has caused many FAQs that seem to contradict. And I'm one that feels they contradict.
I feel the general rule has been shown that if you have something to let you wield a weapon one-handed you treat it as a one-handed weapon for stuff.
BUT the lance may break this rule and still count as a two-handed.

The lance is basically a single exception the second FAQ you mention. Why?

The wording used.

A lance says "You may wield a lance one handed while mounted."

Pretty much everything else says "you may use {insert two-handed weapon} as a one handed weapon".

The difference is the second one is telling you to treat the weapon as a one-handed weapon instead of a two-handed weapon.

The lance FAQ just tells you it breaks the normal rules.

There is no contradiction at all, but it is confusing.

Part of the issue is the wording.

The lance, unlike most later situations which say "treat two-handed X as one handed" says "While mounted, you can wield a lance with one hand."

Which makes the lance an exception to the general 'use it as one handed, get only one-handed benefits' entry.

It is a subtle difference but apparently important.

This is the explanation I needed! Thanks!

Just to be extra clear:

The Lance IS at two-handed weapon, even if it is being wielded in one hand while mounted?

Yes. Treat as two handed.

Appreciate the help guys(and gals)!

Thanks!
