Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The door to the Scarab Sages' research room in the Grand Lodge shakes a little, as if someone is trying to open it without turning the handle. After a moment, the handle turns, and surprisingly, the creature opening it turns out to be a two legged reptilian creature with feathers, slightly shorter than a halfling, but twice as long, thanks to its long tail. The creature has a large mouth full of sharp teeth, and is wearing what appears to be leather barding and an animal training harness.

It's taloned feet click on the stone floor as it enters and looks around menacingly. It makes a curious "Rawr?" noise several times as it wanders around the room.

Scarab Sages

Panicked running can be heard coming from the hallway, and a large, muscular half-orc woman appears at the door. She wears the weapons and armor of a warrior, and an unusual symbol on a necklace around her neck.

Knowledge history or religion DC 20 (DC 15 if you were raised in Osirion):
It's a holy symbol of the ancient Osirioni goddess Isis.

"KATALA!" she yells sternly. "Come!" She points at the floor in front of her, and the small animal responds immediately, lowering its head in apparent shame as it approaches and stops in front of her.

"I'm very sorry about that", the half-orc addresses the room. "My name is Adrianna, and I'm an archaeologist, new to both the Pathfinder Society and Scarab Sages. This is Sma Katala. I've been training her to help guard myself and my allies during our explorations in dangerous areas, but she's still young and not always obedient."

Orc language:
"Sma Katala" literally means "little monster" in the orc tongue.

Scarab Sages

A strange looking man with a feathered crest sprouting from his head looks up from a report to regard the newcomers, and quickly makes his way to the pair with a shy smile upon his face.

"Hello Adrianna, I named Balthazar. I of the Mwangi expanse, and am Aasimar. Is nice to meet you." He introduces himself in mildly broken Common. He looks to Sma Katala and then back to Adrianna before resuming,"Is nice you have little fast saur. They good hunters, quick, strong, and smart too. Better than many big saur." He nods in affirmation, "I not sure what Katala like, but think that if like Casper, she not learn well from anger. Maybe try show care when handle Katala?" Balt suggests before weaving a short somatic gesture and speaking in an indecipherable language.

Spellcraft DC 17:
He has used speak with animals as a spell-like ability. This is limited to Velociraptors and Deinonychus'

After a few seconds a Velociraptor of sheer beauty enters the room, her iridescent feathers glimmering in the light and her silvery scales sheen immaculately. Balt looks back to Adrianna, "This Casper, she friend from youth, and strong hunter. She not like anger, not learn from it. But maybe is because close bond we share?" Balt addresses Casper in the strange language again, and Casper approaches Adrianna with a foreclaw outstretched. "She good at handshake, good trick, make people impress and like her. Make them like me too."

Balt looks to Katala and speaks to her in the strange language, Katala, do you like Adrianna? Does she treat you well? And is there anything you'd like her to know?"

Scarab Sages

"Adrianna?" the dinosaur doesn't understand the name, but assuming Balthazar gestured to the half-orc when he said it, she probably understands who he's talking about. "Me love big friend. Give good food, and pet feathers, and play. But big friend slow, yell mad at me run ahead. Me come when yell, she stop yell, nice again."

At this point, Katala gets distracted seeing Adrianna interact with another raptor. She squawks at Casper, and nips at Adrianna's hand for attention.

Scarab Sages

"Nice to meet you, Balthazar. And you, too, Casper." The half-orc bends down and shakes the raptor's hand.

Seeing Katala's jealous reaction, she releases Casper's hand and pets Katala's head feathers gently. "Relax, Katala. You're not being replaced."

Turning her attention back to Balthazar, she tells him, "Katala and I do have a caring relationship. I have to yell occasionally to get her attention, because she's young and easily distracted, but I would never hit her, and I mostly stick to gentle pets and treats in her training. I've raised her since she was first hatched. She's my little baby monster," she says this last part affectionately to the raptor, who seems quite content leaning in to be pet.

Scarab Sages

"If you learn not to run ahead, big friend yell at you less, and might give more pets and treats. I know we big friends are slow, but you little saurs are very fast, and it is hard for us to keep up, it would be good to be patient. Silver friend," Balt gestures towards Casper, "learned to be patient and calm, with practice, you can too." Balt replies to Katala while giving her a scratch in a preferred place. Balt then looks over to Adrianna and replies,

"Ah, good know, me understand that, young saur easy distract. Never assume hitting, but yell sometimes scare little saur. She think you slow, so not big surprise why she run ahead. She love you though, and like pets and play. Younger than Casper she is, much learn still, but good saur she is." Balt rises from his squat and offers his own hand in greeting. "It good to meet you Adrianna, me hope you be good friend. Maybe you learn animal speak spell, bond with Katala better, yes?"

Its quite obvious that Balt is younger than Adrianna, both from his mannerisms and speech (though thats more due to his unfamiliarity with Common) as well as his physique and appearance.

Scarab Sages

Katala looks back at Balthazar when he speaks to her, but continues to nuzzle Adrianna, who pets the feathers behind her neck affectionately.

"Me like run. Like play. Like jump. Big friend fast as me when hunt, but mostly slow."

Scarab Sages

A bearded elderly Aasimar suddenly appears between some book cases.

Knowledge Arcana DC 27:
the effects of a greater teleport

The Aaismar starts rummaging through the books where he appeared, muttering something about sphinxes and memory. He is clothed from head to toe in the stereotype of an old wizard, pointy hat and all. The only deviation from the wizardly stereotype is the designs on his clothing which depict all manner of symbols of Nethys. The frequency of these symbols seem to signify a cleric.

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (16) + 23 = 39

After a couple moments he notices the interaction. Walking over carrying a couple of books, "I do not see too many people in research room. And a worshiper of Isis no less." Nodding to Balthazar, "Plumekith. What brings the two of you to this humble room of research?"

Scarab Sages

"My name is Adrianna, a new member to the Pathfinder Society and Scarab Sages. As an archaeologist, I was curious to come see the research room, and learn as much as I can before I'm sent away on a mission."

She stands from where she was kneeling, petting Katala, and tells the newcomes, "And this is my companion, Sma Katala."

Scarab Sages

"AWWWWWWW!!!!! What adorable babies! Are they Tahonikepsu's?"

"Hyello Adrianna," He nods to the Half-Orc and then nods to the deinonychus "and you little monster. I am Sasha Velinzrarikovich," he says with a formal bow holding the books in his off-hand with practiced dexterity.

Knowledge Local DC 15:
Sasha is Veture Captain Alexander Velinznrarikovich adopted by the Blackrose family

"Well, " Sasha begins, "between myself and my assistant Grundersnutt we have researched a great many subjects and have also written reports about those subjects. A wayang in a jester's outfit (complete with hat) walks in Hello everyone, my name is Incident. would like to take you up on your offer to copy any notes you have on constructs

Scarab Sages

"Constructs! Jess of course!" Sasha exclaims excitedly gesturing and leading the wayang towards some book shelves marked 'Arcana'.

"You know, though the subject of constructs seems very specific, it is interesting how many different ways that constructs come into being..." Sasha begins, talking continuously while handing the wayang several stacks of papers from the middle of the 'C' section.

"...Arcane construction with a simple incantation..."

"...Divine imbuement, well I remember a time when this holy symbol caused some constructs to leave me alone..."

Profession Lecturer: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32

Scarab Sages

Adrianna and Katala watch the activity with very similar looks of confusion on their faces.

After a bit, Adrianna turns to Balthazar and whispers, "What's a construct?"

Scarab Sages

"Sasha, the half-orc over here asked what a construct is," giggles a voice in Shasha's head.

Sahsa pauses mid lecture and turns back toward Adrianna, "Vell then lady Adrianna, constructs, in simple vay, are statues animated by magic. If jou vould like to more complicated explaination I vould encourage you study vis ze vayang here or vait til I finished and can teach jou ze intricate details of ze magical machinations."

Scarab Sages

As Sasha speaks, a low rumbling noise can be heard in the background. The rumbling gets louder and louder, a mix of metallic clattering and thundering footsteps, finally punctuated by a bang as a curly-haired Osiriani woman bursts into the room. She wears battleworn full plate with a lioness motif, and there is a strange symbol about her neck as well. Even more strangely, there is a gleaming scarab embedded right in the middle of her forehead.

Knowledge history or religion DC 20 (also DC 15 if you were raised in Osirion):
She is wearing a holy symbol of the ancient Osiriani goddess Sekhmet.

Honestly not positive what the check to identify the scarab would be but I'm guessing something like...

DC 25 knowledge arcana:
It is a ka stone, one of the kinds of scarabs living monoliths have bound to themselves as part of their initiation.

Already broad-shouldered and tall, the woman further doubles in size as she rushes in, bumping haphazardly into tables and shelves as she does so. Staring wildly about the room, she hefts an axe in one hand and holds a tower shield at the ready in the other.

"Quick, behind me!" she shouts. "There's reports of a dinosaur on the loose in here!"

Scarab Sages

"I hope you don't mean Katala here", the half-orc responds, petting her raptor on the head.

Scarab Sages

The giant woman turns, immediately spotting the raptor. She stares blankly at the sight of Adrianna and Sma Katala for a moment before narrowing her eyes suspiciously.

"That's a dinosaur? Aren't dinosaurs supposed to be all...big?"

Scarab Sages

"Rawr?"

As the large woman expands and moves she overturns tables and knocks over bookshelves. With each book falling to the floor Sasha's face darkens.

During the verbal exchange Sasha clenches his staff, his knuckles turning white, and begins moving his fingers in the somatic manner of casting.

Spellcraft DC 23:
Sasha begins casting Maze

"Sasha..you probably shouldn't.." a voice sounds in Sasha's head.

Sasha pauses the incantation and hand motions and takes a deep breath. "You talk to her Riddy, I will not. Sasha says in his head and glares at the new entrant.

Inside of Seketkhentiou's head she hears a small voice,"You might want to stop knocking over book shelves ma'am. That old Aaismar over there is about to do something...inconvenient...to you."

Scarab Sages

A half-elven man of Varisian decent appears in the room with a small 'pop'.

Incident listens attentively copying notes down

Scarab Sages

Seket starts at the unexpected sound in her head, then appears to come back to reality a bit; while she doesn’t shrink back down just yet, she does seem calmer now. Being careful not to disturb any more furniture, she looks about for the aasimar in question and the source of the small voice (checking for any signs of a rampaging beast as well, just to be sure...)

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Come to think of it, there don’t seem to be any signs of a dinosaur on the loose in here, she reflects. Well, there’s all that shattered furniture, but that was just me, wasn’t it...

“You’re all sure there’s no dinosaurs in here, then?” Glancing at Sma Katala and Casper she adds, “You know, the huge stompy kind.” Seket illustrates her point with a gesture that might have been intended to evoke tyrannosaur arms, but with her full hands and heavy plate, it’s hard to tell.

Scarab Sages

Sasha relaxes significantly, his body changing to a bit apologetic. " My apologies worshipper of Sekhmet. Nethys knows I get a bit over protective of this room." He begins to pick up the books strewn about, turning his head slightly as he talks. " There are rarely any large animals that come in here as this is a place of knowledge and the sharing of such."

Scarab Sages

The man frowns and bends down to right a overturn table. Sighing a bit, he casts a spell and the table has upright itself as if by unseen force.

Spellcraft, DC 16:
He cast Unseen Servant

He then begins to gather the books around him as other books float over to the table and stacked neatly and orderly.

After picking up a few books, he leaves his spell going as he walks over to Sasha. "Venture Captain Velinznrarikovich. I have brought my latest findings from the Emerald Spire. This time about the dichotomy between Law and Chaos. It should provide valuable insight into their connection and conflict between the two metaphysical forces." He pulls out a journal and places it on a nearby table.

Looking up at the enlarged woman, he simply frowns. "Madam, while I can understand the interest in safeguarding knowledge... But we preserve it and organize it here. So, if you don't mind, please assist in cleaning up the mess you caused. And I doubt we have any louts here that would let their... Companions loose on these grounds needlessly if they were harmful to their surroundings." He gestures to the to the two well-behaved dinosaurs nearby to attempt to drive home a point. "And trust us, when I say that. We don't have anyone like that..." He gestures his hand in a circle in front of him, looking like he is trying to come up with a polite word to describe someone. "Boisterous wildman here like they do in 'Liberties Edge'." With saying his piece, he goes back to the table, as there is already a large stack of books neatly organized.

Scarab Sages

The old mage stands slowly with a few books in hand and begins scanning them. After reordering them he slowly bends down for some more, repeating the process.

A few moments pass, he speaks up in a soft patient manner, "Though my fellow scholar has point about zhe passion in vhich fellow pathfinders live their lives, there is something to say for their contribution to collective as whole." Sasha ends the last statement looking at Gordan with his bushy brows raised and pauses for another few moments. He then looks up at the ceiling as if reminiscing, "Vhy, I cannot count how many times one zhe 'passionate' have saved me from harm."

Sasha begins slowly picking up books again.

"Ms....Ka, vould you be dear and take care of shelves and tables? Nethys has not seen fit to bless me vith physical prowess," he chuckles to himself, still moving slowly.

" Vell, now is good time!" the sage turns to the half-elf while reordering books, "Vat vere findings from Emerald Spire?"

Scarab Sages

Might have minor spoilers of Emerald Spire. I have tried to trim out the spoiler's to the best of my ability. Enjoy.

The Varisian half-elf raises an eyebrow at old sage's comment of the 'passionate', and simply shrugs. He turns around, and directs something to go over to the journal and bring it to Sasha. The journal begins to float and hovers before the Venture Captain. It is singed and rather worn. Like it has been through an explosion. "Pardon the appearance of my findings. I had a terrible experience with being a subject of ancient Azlanti style fireball that was... Quite destructive." The man takes a deep breath to steady himself from that ignoble memory.

"Inside, there are treaties of How the Spire possibly came to be. To Extra Planar creatures and various undead. There were a few dragons, and creatures from the Darklands that were once thought to be no more when Earthfall happened. Little bit of clockwork knowledge is within as well." He pulls out a little green crystal and looks no bigger than an ioun stone and tosses it up into the air before catching it again. "Many creatures within the Spire seem to have their existence there due to the Spire's own magical energies. And a few came to be, because of the Spire itself! In fact... Excuse me one moment."

He intones a spell and he disappears in a flash and with nothing but a pop to signify he teleported.

Spellcraft 19:
He has cast Dimension Door.

And in about a minute, he reappears with the same pop. And along with him is a woman wearing nothing but rags that seems out of sorts, including having a fist sized green crystal embedded in her chest. Blinking and re-adjusting to his surroundings again, he nods and brings the woman forward. "An experiment done by a Azlanti Lich. Her information, along with another we managed to recover from the Spire." He snaps his fingers in front of her and she simply stares on blankly. "I was thinking, possibly, that once my exploration of the Spire is complete. Which should be soon. I will see about recovering her fractured mind. It will be a worthy endeavor."

He goes on and on about other creatures and information found in the Spire. From Aberrations to Xorn, he lists off what has been encountered. "And finally, I believe my team and I are near the root of the Emerald Spire itself! So you can no doubt understand my excitement at nearly completing the delve. At the beginning, when my team started, we found nothing that interesting except a green clockwork man's arm. And now it is nearly Over! Hah..." He dusts himself off and nods as he clearly has an air of being sure of himself at the moment.

Seket shrinks back down, sheathing her axe and shouldering her shield. “I do tend to get a bit...carried away, sorry.” She seems genuinely apologetic, if also disappointed there’s no fight to be had.

“Still, you’d be surprised how many big animals wind up in knowledgey places,” she adds brightly. “Last time I went to the library there was a giant undead spider thing covered in more spiders and some sort of ooze. Oh, and an earthquake...though I guess that was sort of my fault...”

Seket scowls at the half-elf’s tone, as well as the implication that “boisterous” and “wild” are somehow bad things to be. She does start trying to help straighten out the room, though, picking up fallen tomes and righting entire shelves. Piling all the books she can carry into a single teetering stack, she carries them over to Sasha--and very pointedly not Gordan--holding them patiently for him while he works.

At Sasha’s remarks about passion Seket brightens again; she even tries to listen as Gordan explains his findings, but before long she has completely zoned out. She snaps back to attention when he returns with the ragged woman, though, muttering a mix of Osiriani curses and prayers and regarding the empty-eyed woman with mingled anger and concern. As Gordan continues to talk, Seket quietly tries to get the woman’s attention.

“Hey, uh...miss? Are you alright…?”

Scarab Sages

Sasha carefully grabs the singed, worn book from the air and begins skimming through it as Gordan explains.

When the disheveled woman is brought back the old Aaismar's eyes light with curiosity. Hearing the curses and prayers, Sasha waves his hand, "No need for concern. There spells of psychic kind for healing minds." He continues studying the woman, snapping and poking.

"Where is this woman kept?"

Scarab Sages

The man comes back to attention at VC Velinznrarikovich's inquiry. "Ah... Yes. This woman and the the man are both being housed at the medical ward within Skyreach. And both are being watched by a Iomedian cleric named Grim, and a young oracle that is named Carol. Among other healers of course." He simply shrugs as the woman continues to stare blankly onward from all the outside interaction.

"From the examination I was able to perform, she was once a mindless undead creature. But!" He points a finger upward. "Due to the Spire fragment in her chest, it has revived her body. As you can tell if you look into the crystal itself, it has taken the place of the heart. Other from that, she is a living human being, with a heavily... Destroyed mind." He rubs the bridge of his nose before continuing. "Since that Lich did his experiment, there was even a creature from the positive energy plane." He gestures a bit. "It claimed that... Ancient lich figured out the cure to death." He laughs slightly. "I doubt that a construct that mimics a physical body down to blood vessels and the like would be considered, 'Alive'."

He orders a chair brought to him, and a unseen force carries a chair over to him and places it down next to him. "She does seem to follow simple commands, like an undead creature. But... Well, just watch." He takes hold of one of the woman's hands and leads her over to the chair. He gestures to the woman and then to the chair. "Sit... Sit here... Sit on the chair." The woman simply stares at Gordan. He steps to the side and gestures to the woman. "See. She might be able to listen, but if you don't have magical compulsion, she isn't able to react."

Scarab Sages

Sasha quickly moves over and sits down next to the demonstration stroking his beard vigorously and exclaiming "Interesting!" several times.

"This remind me of report I read about corpse animation via transmutation! But this takes it to whole new level!" the Venture Captain exclaims again accentuating his point by thrusting his hands in the air. He then begins to pace quickly, obviously lost in thought.

After a few moments of pacing he snaps his old fingers and starts,"Yes! I remember reading 3 months ago-" he breaks and says a few arcane words and makes a gesture and stares blankly for a couple seconds.

Spellcraft DC 21:
Psychic Asylum

After those couple seconds Sasha comes to and continues a bit slower than before, "It is as I remembered. There vas a Gnome who animated a vale carcass with transmutation magic. This could be but the beginnings, however. For to keep body 'living' and vorking, one could use necromancy. Nethys! Vith an intricate enough knowledge of the vorkings of a body you could even use evocation! After that one could build it and control it as golem. It turns into flesh golem except the flesh is 'living'. Thus, functioning body, but only husk, as zhe soul vas likely to have gone to zhe boneyard...hopefully," Sasha concludes.

Sasha says moments later with another wave of a hand,"This is of course under assumption that zhe mind vasn't just crippled and body remains functioning off base instincts."

The old Aasimar hunkers down and begins to get lost in his own thoughts again.

Scarab Sages

The Varisian Half-elven man nods at points of explanation. He raises an eyebrow when the old sage stares off blankly for only a couple seconds.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (17) + 26 = 43 Its an auto succeed, but it is nice to see such a large number. o.o

Ah... Psychic Asylum. I haven't seen it cast in person before. But read plenty about it. He thinks as he continues to nods in agreement to the aged Venture Captain when he resumes his theories.

The Varisian half-elf puts a hand onto his own chin. Looking a bit in thought, he glances a look towards the crystal embedded into the chest of the woman. Might help if that crystal was actual flesh before... Healing her. His eyes widen as he stares at the crystal. "Wait... If we cast Stone to Flesh and following it up with the esoteric psychic spell Psychic Surgery, we might be able to bring her back to fully functioning living human being!" He blinks a couple of times before continuing. "Hm, or the other way around. If Stone to Flesh is cast first, then maybe the woman might be able to avoid the shock of having a crystal in her chest. But if Psychic Surgery is cast first, she may have more of a chance of continuing since the crystal is sustaining her existence." He sighs and looks towards the wizened aasimar for his input.

The woman continues to stare off into the distance. Which looks that she is staring towards the two dinosaurs.

Scarab Sages

"You know.." Sasha begins, stroking his beard, "Best option may be to delve into mind via possession. First thing ve need learn is vether she husk or mentally destroyed. Both of which ve could find out and possibly more if ve try possession. Vile possessing, ve could also observe extent to vich gem controls her."

He then silently nods to himself in affirmation.

Scarab Sages

Gordan slyly grins. "Ah... That is a spell I just acquired to my special new spellbook. Hehe... Erm...." He looks towards the woman then back to the aged Venture Captain. "I have not had used the spell before, nor have I ever cast anything like it." He sighs. "Well, to improve magical knowledge, one must venture out and experiment."

He walks to a nearby table and pulls out a large bright white covered tome from a bag that might be slightly too small for it. Looking through it, he finds the spell he is looking for, and begins to commit it to memory.

After ten minutes or so, he stows his tome away in the bag and turns back to the woman. He barks out for a chair, and one floats up to him. Him, and the chair move close to the woman and the chair is placed down nearby. Getting the woman to finally sit down upon a chair, he sits down on his own. "Nethys, may this experiment prove knowledgeable." Taking a deep breath, he begins to cast his spell and focus upon the woman. Not finding any resistance, he delves in.

Spellcraft DC 20:

Gordan has just cast Possession

And with that, it looks like the man that is sitting there just died.

Scarab Sages

The woman's eyes close and she tilts her head from side to side. Her arms then flex and her hands grasp at air.

When all said and done, the woman open her eyes to the world. They seem more focused now. "Hm, seems like everything is in working order..." The woman stands and looks around the room. "It is strange. There is this weird feeling at the back of my mind... I just can't place my finger on it..."

She walks over to Gordan and looks at him. "Strange and stranger. To see one's body from outside. It is quite weird. Though... I think I have came up with a name for her. Azadeh." She then looks around the room once more. "It is one of the words for 'earth' or 'ground' in Azlanti. I feel it is... There is that feeling again."

Turning back to the man, she looks him over once more. "Hm... Is this feeling from being in close proximity to my own body... No...?" After that, she leans over to get a closer look before closing her eyes.

Still as stone for a few seconds, she stands straight again, eyes not as focused as before, but is a bit more aware. She looks around, taking in the sight of the library before looking towards the aged aasimar. She speaks in a quiet voice; "Úbi sum? Quis es? Quis sum ego?"

Azlanti:

"Where am I? Who are you? And who am I?

The man awakes from his death-like slumber and looks up. He is stunned to see, and hear the woman speak.

New character idea go! ^_^
