So, now that we have the magical child archetype, I'm now intrigued what sort of "magical girls" exist on Golarion, canonically. I doubt that there's anything out there right now, but I'm interested in where they might come from and what themes they may have

I'm pretty sure Grandmaster Torch is one.

Nidal would be a good place a grittier take on the magical girl story. A kind of "after the bad guys win, how will the heroes bring light and love back into the hearts of those around them?"

Any of the large metropolises work as well.

There's probably some rather creepy ones in Irrisen.

Well, yeah. Everyone knows that the magical girls in Irrisen are just practicing, and retrain into Witches once they're done developing their powers. ^^

If Paizo doesn't do it, I might think of a "sailor senshi" of the golarian star system. Sailor Eox, Sailor Castrovel, Sailor Triaxus...

I was gonna suggest something for this build, but I couldn't find it on Archives of Nethys. Then I realized that's because it's in Horror Adventures.

...And that's how Mr. Seifter responsibly avoided giving spoilers for an upcoming project. XD Still, I'm definitely looking forward to that book. Between Horror Adventures and Sandy Petersen's "Cthulhu Mythos for Pathfinder", we should be able to make something that fits Aucturn's particular brand of weird.

Hey Mr. Jacobs, since you showed up in my modest thread, perhaps you can shine some light on how come magical children are designed the way they are, since their abilities are vastly different than one would expect from a magical girl.

In fairness, there's no one setup of abilities that perfectly matches all magical girls (except maybe transformation sequences).

Some magical girls fight with giant laser blasts. Some pummel enemies with their fists. Some use guns, or swords, or whips, or something genuinely unusual. Most have some sort of finishing technique, although that's not totally required. XD It varies, really.

Yep, there's a world of difference between how Sailor Scouts, Puella Magi Madoka Magica girls and Ryuko/Satsuki fight.

Indeed, while some people might think of magical girls as blasting people with various energy attacks thanks to Sailor Moon and Nanoha, there's a huge array of different magical girls with different abilities. Some can only transform into various things (Hime-chan's Ribbon, Himitsu no Ako-chan), others have extremely eclectic and often very specific abilities (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Shugo Chara), others seem to have primarily physical abilities with a few very specific abilities (Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Pretty Cure, maybe Kill la Kill?), some have fairly vague and ill-defined magical abilities (Ultra Maniac), others have a wide array of various specific abilities (Card Captor Sakura), and so on and so forth. What is and isn't a magical girl is primarily a matter of aesthetics and setting, more than a specific power set, and as a result, if you really wanted to do justice to the magical girl concept, rather than an archetype, you'd probably be looking at a unique class or possibly even a series of classes...so it's completely understandable why they chose the route they did.

I would probably have personally tried to allow being able to select any 6th or 9th level spell list but casting as a summoner myself, going magus for your traditional blaster, summoner for something like Card Captor Sakura, bard for your traditional uplifting with a touch of healing, cleric for a more dedicated healer type, and so on and so forth. I would also have liked some options to snag some more mystical vigilante talents, perhaps being able to steal from the warlock or the cabalist's unique collection, but there are definitely space limitations involved, so - as I said - it's very understandable.

If were talking about abilities the kineticist comes closer then any to fit most magical girls. All you got to do is give them a transformation and a item, cute creature, etc. that is the source of there power. Though the class lacks for the skill aspect of most magical girls.

The magical child archetype isn't bad but lacks the versatility you would need to cover many different types of magical girls. Maybe if you had a choice of what spell list you could use at character creation instead of the unchained summoner spell list. Also a choice between your uber familiar or a bonded item of power, ether of wich could be the source of your transformation powers.

I don't know if I would agree with most magical girls...there's a lot of magical girl series out there with a vast array of powersets, after all. Obviously, it's hard to really be thorough in building a baseline for overall trends unless you're really dedicated, but I'd say offhand that blasting-type magical girls are something of a minority (though their series are probably more high profile than many of the others)...I've seen plenty using various kinds of (often silly) weapons primarily, or using physical abilities, as well as plenty whose magical talents don't tend towards combat in the first place. I do agree, though, that taking a level of magical child and hopping into kineticist is a fairly decent option for reflecting some kinds of magical girls, though I would also say that doing the same with occultist also accurately reflects many magical girls, with their array of magical gadgets. Probably some other combinations of multiclassing that would work well, depending on what you're going for.

I hope in the future, Paizo releases some vigilante talents that are more magical themed, possibly requiring spellcasting so that archetypes like cabalist, magical child, warlock, and zealot, as well as multiclassed vigilantes/spellcasters can take them. Not that I would object to getting touches of magic that the default vigilante can pick up as well. Due to the more mundane vigilante talents available, my own magical child is primarily a fist fighter, which certainly fits some magical girl archetypes, though not others. Some feats that allow magical children to pick up some talents from other spellcasting vigilante archetypes or allow their familiar to transform into a magical item - or simply have it manifest as an intelligent item in the first place - would certainly be welcome as well.

Yeah, but that does kind of open up another can of worms...even if it's in the form of a weapon, can it be enchanted as a creature? Probably not as-written. Is it even masterwork? It says usually, does that mean it could be a two-handed weapon if I really wanted it to? Etc., etc., etc. Having it transform into a magical rod could be of interest, but you don't really get a lot of benefits from it...and, of course, that's not until 7th. I have similar complaints about the oni familiar, as much as I like the idea of wearing a living creature as a mask.

Actually, that's one of my main complaints, the pool of 3rd-level familiars is pretty small, and a lot of them don't really fit many concepts...you've got your beheaded, your celestial/entropic/fiendish/resolute X, coral capuchin, dire rat, and a skvader. Most of the time, I imagine going celestial/entropic/fiendish/resolute for pure thematics...at least when the alternatives are a decapitated head, a fish-monkey-thing, a giant rat, and a rabbit-bird. Well...probably depends on how you present them...plenty of odd magical girl companions. But a decapitated head is definitely for morbid magical girls only.

I dunno, talking skulls might be a good thematic fit for some of them, and it doesn't even have to be that morbid if they're optimistic and trying to protect people... XD

Yeah, I did consider the Lollipop Chainsaw route, but it gets weird with all the forms. Not necessarily completely out of the question to have your boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other's spirit chained to you and possessing a variety of bodies and using their spiritual/deceased state to help channel you magical energy, but...definitely a little f+!*ed up?

My magical child is a happy-go-lucky wandering performer who worships Desna by day and turns into a super serious (like DCAU Batman) vigilante who worships the Black Butterfly by night (her transformation sequence activation is flipping her butterfly holy symbol around hehe).

Considering there's such a great duality there and that the Black Butterfly's obedience is to anonymously help people, it just seemed so perfect. They even have the same favored weapon :3 While I know that vigilante seems like it would be more suited for individual characters, a whole group of similarly themed vigilantes sounds super cool to me! Lyrakien azatas are even a natural improved familiar at high levels :)

If you want a more classic magical girl you could just play warlock instead. Just switch their main spellcasting ability from intelligence to charisma and have them cast spells like a bard but still using the wizard sorcerer spell list. You can even have a familiar too.

One doesn't actually need to be a Magical Child Vigilante to play a magical girl ... and your description closely matches a character idea I have.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I think the rules for the transformation sequence ability need to be a bit more fleshed out in errata or another printing. Also, since the archetype allows for arcane spellcasting, does it qualify for the mystic theurge prestige class? Lastly, does anyone know other classes might work well for a multiclass of this Vigilante archetype?

I've been thinking that if you want to run the big magic blast brand of magic girl, your best bet might be a sorcerer equipped with a wand of disguise self. Hit the disguise self wand on your first action for the "transformation" then start shouting spell names and blast away.

Morbidly I imagine a group of Ustalav girls, turned into vampires while young so they stay kids eternally, who fight to keep the supernatural forces of creepiness from getting any worse than they are.

Osirioni magical girls empowered by female Egyptian gods. Egyptians were big on words and names being magical, so calling out attacks fits.

Jalmeray magical girls using devices that call on the powers of enslaves genies. Over time they grow to realize that genies are people too and don't deserve to be used as tools.

Nexites vs Gebs: they go to war to defend their countries, but at what cost?

I hear that there's a southern Garund nation with divinely empowered queens. So the princesses are of course magical girls.

Xa Hoi dragon-kids, locked out of their dragon forms until they prove their worth by defending the kingdom from outside threats. Kaiju from the Valashmai Jungle! Oni infiltrators from Chu Ye! Jorogumo witches from Shenmen! Giant terra-cotta golems from that one nation that puts your soul in the army after death! Bishonen/shoujo from Jinin!
