I only occasionally look at the official Nightwish website, but I looked this week and saw that they had a new album out last year (as detailed in the subject line).
What are people's thoughts on this album?
I had one listen on Youtube- admittedly, it didn't seem to be a great copy- but nothing really leapt out at me. Maybe the recording was too quiet?

When Nightwish still had Tarja, they had a unique sound. Operatically trained sopranos don't do a lot of metal or rock music, strangely enough. Now, when Tarja was replaced by Annette, I admit, I think the band grew into their own, letting their instruments and compositions fill in for Tarja's loss. There are some songs that Tuomas wrote that I really don't think Tarja could have pulled off, like Amaranth or Meadows of Heaven. Being fair, Annette couldn't have pulled off some of the songs Tarja did, like Ever Dream or Phantom of the Opera. I liked the Annette period more, however, due to the expansion of the role of the other band members.
Endless Forms Most Beautiful is okay, but Floor hasn't yet found her niche I think. Elan is the one track I truly enjoy off of that album, though a few others are pretty good. Let's reconvene when they release another album with her.

I hear that Epica - Unleashed- has taken over the mantle of Symphonic-Metal-Opera-Awesomeness.
Floor, the new Tarja apparently, is awesome live according to my cousin. I believe him because he doesn't exaggerate.

I didn't care for Anette and the abrupt shift in style that was a result of her variance from Tarja, but I really like Floor Janesen. She's much closer to Tarja in range and style, even if the group hasn't fully gone back to pre-Annete arrangements.
I suppose a good way to put it is that if Floor had done the Once album (it was their first shift away from the operatic styles of previous albums, but still had Tarja), you might not have noticed it wasn't Tarja at first.
