In the Pathfinder RPG line, there are sort of a few thematic subcategories you might see. Advanced X Guide and Ultimate X are both fairly similar, and tend to be full of rules elements that match whatever "X". X Adventures give you the support you need to add either a sprinkling or a heaping helping of a new sort of subgenre of fantasy. Bestiary X has tons of cool new monsters. And X Codex has lots of prebuilt NPCs to use in your game, generally arranged by some theme (NPC Codex, for instance, had 1-20 of each core class, whereas Monster Codex had enough monster NPC statblocks to give you a variety of characters of 20 classic monster races).

Advanced should mean better and more effective while ultimate should mean the best possible. Unchained should mean even better as it should go beyond balanced.

That being said, the game developers can and have changed the definitions completely. Words mean exactly what they want them to mean, nothing more, nothing less.

See, I take Advanced to mean "more complex", Ultimate to mean "most comprehensive", and Unchained to mean "not restricted by 3.x design". Absolutely none of them mean "better".

They both mean "This word sounds cool! Let's put it in the cover!".

That is how I have always seen it, just like the "complete" books from 3.5.

Which is how everything is named.

"Everything" is hyperbole... But you're right. And there's nothing wrong with giving a cool name to your product. :)

I actually listed a bunch of different mediums like music, television and movies but my phone didn't like it or something. :-)

Ha! Stupid a#~!@~*!

Ultimate means "final", as in there will not be an Ultimate Magic 2.

Ultimate can also mean something like "the best".

Not that grammar would stop Paizo (or any other company) from releasing a product with similar name...

After all, there isn't anything particularly advanced about Advanced Class Guide. And Ultimate Combat isn't very good either...

I really like Ultimate Combat actually.

I wasn't clear enough. When they released UM and UC, I believe James Jacobs (could be wrong here) stated that it meant there wouldn't be an UM 2 etc.

It won't be UC 2, but that doesn't mean Ultimate Ultimate Combat (2UC)?
Assuming PF flourishes in its current edition for decades to come there will another big page HB book of combat!

Nah, what it means is there could be an Advanced Combat instead of Penultimate Combat(where you fight over how many motherlovin cherries are in the motherlovin bowl.) See?

Like I said, it means what they want it to mean.

how much money do you have in your pocket?

also "ultimate" is like turning it up to 11. and "average combat" or mediocre combat" just wouldn't sell

"Ultimate" just means they're not going to publish any more books on that particular subject. Ever.
Eventually they'll exhaust every possible subject and will have to stop publishing.

I think Ultimate Ohioan Flumph is still some way away.
