Character Unlocks for PACG OP

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

Grand Lodge

Got a few questions from my players and couldn't direct them to any one place on the site to see how to unlock particular characters. Is there a list somewhere of the characters and their criteria?

Grand Lodge

I don't know of any list but, seeing as how there are three characters you can unlock via OP play, I'll just list them here....

Jirelle - complete Season 0 Adventure 1
Enora - complete Season 0 Adventure 6
Alain - complete Season 1 Adventure 6

and, just for completeness, the ability to unlock Arushalae was a GM boon for GenCon.

Most characters are unlocked when certain adventures have been completed. (Not seasons!)

Jirelle - Swashbuckler (Rogue deck) unlocks after completing Adventure 0-1 (SotS Lost at Seas adventure)
Enora - Arcanist (Wizard deck) unlocks after completing Adventure 0-6 (SotS Hurricane Weather adventure)

Alain (and Donahan) - Cavalier (Paladin deck) unlocks after completing Adventure 1-6 (SotRi The Last Crusade adventure)

Arueshalae - Spy (Succubus) (Rogue deck) was unlocked as a special GM boon from GenCon. :-)

No unlocked characters have been hinted at in Season 2 - Season of the Runelords as yet.

I'm editing and updating. :P

Hey there

No one in my group has ever played OP, but we are considering it while we wait for Mummy's Mask to be released.

We did not realise there were any character restrictions.

I will finally read through the OP rules, but could you please confirm there are Character restrictions and offer any insight as to Why?

Thanks

The character restrictions are in regards to the class decks. In order to play in the Adventure Card Guild, each player must have their own class deck. You can play any character out of that class deck, or any character you have unlocked as explained above.

The primary reasoning is that since the Card Guild is organized play, you can take your ACG character and class deck anywhere and play. That would be far more difficult to do if you are taking cards out of the base box for characters and for upgrades to your deck. Using only the class decks means that base boxes remain intact.

It also is a regulation issue. If each class only gets to use cards from their own deck box, then everyone playing across the Card Guild is operating on precisely the same level. It is the same explanation for the regulation in PFS play.

Hello! Thanks for considering giving OP a shot.

The characters that are used for OP are from the respective class decks. If there's a copy of your character in a base set, then you can use them as instead of the one from your class deck. For example, you could use Kyra from the Rise of the Runelords or Wrath of the Righteous base sets with the class deck because Kyra appears in the class deck.

Please also note that you can play the scenarios with whatever you want; Class Deck usage only matters if you want to officially report the games and be able to play your characters in ACGuild events at game stores and conventions.

Thank for all the responses

So to summarise, in OP you can play any character that has a Class Deck, such as:

Paladin, Monk or Druid.

You can not use a character, that does not have class deck (unless unlocked), such as:

Adowyn Hunter
Crowe Bloodrager

Thanks

Exactly right.

Tanis, quick question about Arushalae:

I play in a playgroup that isn't part of a organized play in our area but we follow pretty strict to the OP rules. I was thinking of letting people in our play group play Arushalae using the Rogue Class Deck. When the boon was given out at gencon, how did the award go? Was she able to start out with her owner cards as well?

The Owner trait confers the Basic trait to whomever the Owner is (see the WotR rulebook) so she gets to build her initial deck with the cards she owns.

The cards she owns have too high an adventure deck number to start with. She can't use them till the party gets to that adventure.

Grand Lodge

Those cards are part of the Wrath of the Righteous set. Unless the reward says otherwise, they can't be in her Deck Box. I think that's why he's asking.

The guide has an allowance for Owner cards to be added to your Deck box. Does it cover these as well? I don't have the guide handy.

My guess is that the Gen Con boon allows them as B cards, but I haven't seen it so I don't know that for sure. It's what I'd do if I were to allow someone to play her under Guild-style rules. (Otherwise she couldn't use her Gift.)

GM Reward, Duty Is Its Own Reward: Unlock the ability to play Arueshalae in Season of the Righteous. Before the first time you play her, choose whether to play her as a starting character, or as a Tier 4 character in Adventure 4 and higher scenarios. If you play her as a starting character, you do not gain access to her Owner cards until Adventure 3 or higher. If you play her as Tier 4, choose 3 skill feats, power feats, and card feats, and choose a role and gain another power feat. Only one player may play Arueshalae in a session.
(Clarification: The Owner cards referred to on the Reward are the Loot cards. You still start with the Arueshalae's Gift cohort. )

That answers that. Thanks, Keith. :)

I guess we could have shortcut this whole mess by starting here. It's not so much part of your DECK as part of your character.

The "Season of the Example" sample chronicle sheet in the back of the latest rule book has "Unlocked Ranzak" as an adventure reward. But "Season of the Example" isn't real, so...

There is almost probably likely maybe certainly one or more unlocked characters in Season of the Runelords.

There, now you've been hinted.

Except when I'm not. Which happens more often than not when it comes to this game, I feel.

OMG YOU CAN PLAY EKKIE!!!

Blah I forgot about that. But her Cohort IIRC is also AD3 so she can't use that either? That seems odd.

Clarified by Keith several posts above. You DO get to start with her cohort, but not with her weapon/item/etc Owner cards.

Where's my Pony card? (Will not accept a riding horse.)

We got a celestial mount today, and Rebel concluded quite quickly that it was a pony.

Grand Lodge

The last time my cleric summoned a celestial pony (in the RPG), he used it for a flanking bonus.

Until my jackass archer botched and shot it to death.

You are the governor!!! Cheers!

So if we choose her to be a tier 4 character, how many deck upgrades does she receive?

Silver Crusade 4/5 ***

In the interests of conspiracy theory-ing, I interpreted Keith's response here as the possibility of a Zadim unlock. ;-)

None, but you can build her starting deck out of anything with an AD# of B-2.

Sorry for the thread necro, but we were trying to figure out if the Shardra unlock from Season of the Runelords 2-3 allows her to start with cohort Kolo (since it's on the deck list for the character add-on). Or does she get the Ally version instead?

Lone Shark Games

It is intended that she can use her cohort.

From page 7 of the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild Guide, under Your Class Deck Box: "If the back of your character card names a cohort, you may have any one cohort with that name in your Class Deck box."

I also have a feeling the first post of this thread should become updated. Hm hm.
