Shrine to Lamashtu and "Encountering"

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I've been playing this game for a couple of years now, but suddenly been given cause to doubt myself.

If Merisiel is at the Shrine to Lamashtu, she can evade a blessing, and not take the mental damage, right?

that's how we'd always played it, but recently encountered someone who believed the damage came instantly, before the option to evade.

When the RotR rulebook was written, I'm not sure the answer to this was clear.

However, the rules for encountering a card were changed in the S & S rulebook. (This change is also in the Wrath rulebook.)

Now, when you encounter a card, before any evasion occurs, powers that take effect when the card is encountered occur. The Shrine of Lamashtu location power is one such power. So Merisiel takes damage from encountering a blessing at the Shrine before she can evade it.

See this thread and the various places it leads. An evaded card is an encountered card, even in RotR.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that discussion.

The rulebook for a later set overrules the rulebook for a previous set, as I understand it, so the S & S encounter rules apply to RotR. This makes the situation quite clear.
