What kind of trouble can Quink get up to?

Rise of the Runelords

In my last session, I had Brodert bribe one of the PCs to sneak him into the (now cleared) Catacombs of Wrath. He was excited to get in there and study and document them.
When the PCs cleared it, they left before deactivating the runewell. I figure Quink is going to have a great time studying that.
My first thought is that, while studying the well, he will create (accidentally or not) some sinspawn and they will attack him. I don't want him to die, so I plan on saying that after they wound him, he's able to hide in another part of the ruins. The Sinspawn would then make it up into Sandpoint and cause some havoc before the PCs put them down.
My question is, is there another way this could go? I don't want Quink to die, but is there some other way he can be corrupted by the Catacombs that would be more fun? I guess he could try some of Lamashtu's water and that could lead to a fun encounter, but again, i don't really want him to die.

Someone did a version of Quink as a villian, one who had learned too much and been corrupted. Here.

Perhaps he fell into the pool after accidentally making a Sinspawn, and he comes out with chalk white skin, green hair and a propensity for humorous murder?

I've had him be a bit more of a bumbling curmudgeon - one who is semi-correct from certain points of view. A Doctor Smith from Lost in Space (show, not movie) type. After my players cleared the Catacombs, the town hired some dwarves to wall it up - Quink made a big stink about it and went to the PCs complaining about the situation.

Another version could be Quink went down there, made a bunch of Sinspawn and then came running out, and holes up in his shop/house.
"Sinspawn? I have no idea where they came from. What did you meddling kids do? Did you go cut your finger and bleed into that orange pool? Don't lie, I know you did it! Whats with this bandage around my finger? Its just a nasty paper cut."

Turning him into a Lamashtu cultist could work too, maybe he summons up a succubus, and kills Hannah Velerin, letting the succubus replace her in town.

Turning Smooth B Quink into the Joker is such a great idea that I hate myself for not coming up with it on my own. No, not really...but I did LOL...
I play him up similarly. He's a bumbling curmudgeon but he's always indignant and takes any comment as a slight on his intellect. I figure he's got enough examples in his backstory of people failing to see his insights and research as valid, so he's built up a bit of an attitude about it.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Smooth B Quink can't help but wonder what kind of love Lamashtu has to offer.

I expanded the old light quite a bit in my campaign. PC's had to rappel to a small opening near the top of the tower to gain access. Once inside, passages underneath the light went to choppers basement and other ruined/collapsed areas. I also borrowed/enhanced the 3d hologram idea from the forums here in the main hall of the light.

When activated, (with blood) it shows a spherical map of the world with other locations of bases/defenses/runewells/etc. marked on it in flashing colors of differing intensity. It also would have taken the weapon out of standby mode if it wasn't mostly broken. Of course no one currently living has any idea what it does, but Mr. Quink is giving it his best effort.

The PC's thought the whole place was evil death land, so they didn't touch anything. (The PC who took the Thessilon background trait was tempted however) They spent so long down in the passages underneath that Mr. Quink had one of his mage apprentice friends cast levitate on him and followed the PC's inside after about thirty minutes.

Activating the map/weapons console shook the entire tower and tunnels underneath as part of the weapon systems activation process. By the time the PC's made it back up to the main chamber, they found a delighted Mr. Quink happily trying to press everything he could find to try and "make some history!"

Fortunately for everyone in a ten mile radius, he did not.
