She's on the World Security Council now.

Working with S.H.I.E.L.D. right now. Unless I'm mistaken. :D

There is no S.H.I.E.L.D. in the MCU. At least not officially anyway...

Also the euphemism for retirement is "retcon."

The font size looks different right now. Let me try something.
Bigger

I think the IT crew is adjusting settings.

*sees the vertical and the horizontal*

Thought so. It's a bit different than yesterday.

Well, after hours and hours of being down (is it because the official playtest started today? Or am I wrong about that?) the forums are back online. Whew. I was beginning to have withdrawals.

So how is everyone today?

Playtest start tomorrow. That was either crash or purposeful exorcising the gremlins out of the system prior to that.

Ah, ok. I'm not participating in the playtest (nor have any interest in 2e) but I'll be more prepared for a site crash if it happens again tomorrow...LOL. I'm largely housebound because I don't have a working vehicle anymore and the forums and FB are my primary means of daily interaction and entertainment. Sad, really.

Well, I... might have publication plans for 2nd edition, already, so I do pay a tad more attention to the playtest :P

That's awesome! I hope that works out for you.

My group and I have decided that we're not going to invest anymore time and money into learning a new game system. We've been playing PF for years now and this is the game we'll someday "retire" from. I wish Paizo nothing but good luck on the 2nd Edition, but it's just not something we'll take part in.

I'm looking forward to seeing how/what they do. But I like learning new systems. I usually find something I like about each game system I try. Usually. ;)

Now INVESTING in it? That's another story. I won't mind switching over if I like it, and/or if my PbP-mates want to move to it. But I dont have a TON invested in physical books. And the website(s) have all of the important info on them, so moving over won't be too much trouble for me.
:)

I like having the hardbacks, but I do use the websites a lot more during actual game nights. It's just more relaxing to sit and read the book than scan the 'sites looking at things.

Yeah, I’m going more PDF this time around. My PbPs will likely stay 1e

I plan to also jump into the publishing game, though as a provider of more PF Classic stuff to people not making the switch.

Old school or no school for me.

That's a pretty broad statement. How old a school are we talkin' here?

I'm not paying for the play test, but I'll check it out.

Not sure how invested I'll get, I'll keep getting APs as long as it's tied to the Paizo advantage, but that might be it.

To be honest, I love Pathfinder Classic.

So do I. Of the iterations of my favorite game that I've played it's far and away the version I like best.

I will say I would love love love to run a campaign in the Midgard setting from Kobold Press. It would be the first time I've ever set a game in a published setting, having homebrewed for as long as I have been playing. And that's a long time. But the rest of the guys have no interest in spending more money and have said time and again they don't want to play in an established world other than the one we've cooperatively created over the years. So I guess I'll just cherry pick from it and not tell them.. LOL

Cherry pick it all.

The only thing I want to happen is someone to clone me so I can get out of sitting for a crazy 80+ year old woman that clearly needs more assisted help than she does a dog sitter...

Also my new laptop is coming.

Woot! I received a new laptop as a gift from a friend in June. I had no idea about it beforehand. She just showed up one day with a brand new HP Notebook. I'm seldom at a loss for words, but all I could do was just say "Thank you" over and over.

I knew about it since I told Mom to order it for me so I can keep up with stuff while I'm in the boondocks come Sunday until August 13th.

That and keep my RPG files on it...and my comics...and other stuff.

So like nine more hours before Paizo servers implode and evaporate in an orgy of downloads.

It was nice knowing you.

If i don't make it, tell my wife i said "Hello!".

See you all on the other side

~cries~ I will miss you all! ~runs off in tears as armageddon approaches~

Wow. Armageddon is both 20 years old and just a few hours away! Yay for new playtesting!

I fear no implosion or Armageddon. After surviving Battlefield Earth with some brain cells intact, I feel almost invincible.

~laughter~ Loved the book, hated the movie (and the author!!!).

I Really liked the Movie Armageddon.
Outer Space, Action, Adventure, Romance, Laughs, did I mention OUTER SPACE?!? What's not to love? :)

The BOOK Battlefield Earth,...
(if I am recalling the correct novel, I have read a LOT of books in my lifetime, and some do get jumbled in what's left of my mind!) ;P
,...is one of the FEW books (Meaning, maybe 2) in my life that I was simply unable to finish.

And I am just a TEENSY bit anal-retentive about my reading. (IF I start a book, I finish it. I hate reading a series out of order, etc) ;P

Could. Not. Keep. Reading. It. >_<

The MOVIE Battlefield Earth? Have not seen it, so no comment on that one.

Battlefield Earth is one of the crappiest books I managed to finish. The movie is actually much better than the book... Yeah.

LOL, when I say 'Slightly anal-retentive' about my reading,...

I read, and finished, 'The Silmarillion'. (And a few other of Tolkien's 'histories' that he wrote while fleshing out his world) And managed to enjoy it (them) for what it was. Despite it not being the 'page-turner' that 'The Lord of the Rings' is. ;)

I once borrowed the 42 hour long audiobook of "Battlefield Earth" from a coworker. It was the biggest load of crap I'd ever listened to. He listened to it every year on the same date.

Given the quality of the book, a much better movie would not have been hard to accomplish. L. Ron Hubbard can't write.

It’s telling that a supposed ‘best seller’ like Battlefield Earth has no fan base worth mentioning. No Cosplay, no Cons, no fanfic

Silmarillion, (well the book of creation, and the book of Beleariand wars at least) were better read than Lord Of The Ring.

I will respectfully disagree. It took me 47 years to get through the Silmarilion, and I had to do it through Audiobook *. However the guy that reads it is fantastic

*

Spoiler:
The Silmarilion is one of the few audiobooks you can’t get on Audible. Still worth getting the CDs.

Silver Crusade

I was just having this discussion with somebody. I never made it through the Silmarilion.

I haven't finished either. I dragged myself through Fellowship but gave up early into Two Towers. Tolkien's style just isn't for me, I'm afraid.

At least there's the movies. =)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

To clarify: I never read the book. I just had to sit through the movie BECAUSE my friends thought it would be better. We saw it in theaters, even though I voted for something else. (I forget what.)

Also I don't need Bruce Willis or Ben Affleck to save the planet.

Just Chris Hemsworth.

I read the books, but they took me a long, long time to slog through. They were good stories and are the very cornerstones of modern fantasy but they were hard for me to enjoy.

The movies are among my favorites of all time, though I know they deviate significantly from the books in nearly way possible. But I thoroughly enjoy them.

LOL,
Reading Silmarillion, (and nearly all of Tolkien's other world-history/background stuff to the Lord of the Rings) to me was like reading the Bible. (And yes, I've done that too!) ;)
Full of LOTS of good stuff, but time-consuming, and most assuredly NOT the easiest prose to digest.

I find that Tolkien was, IMHO, a very good writer. He just wasn't a very ENTERTAINING writer. (Before you get mad, let me finish!) ;P

He wrote like the Historian he was. His characters were fully-realized, and he FULLY created his world that the characters lived in, (he made up several foreign languages for crying out loud! With complete Grammar rules!) but the description of all of the action scenes and important events were from a Historian's point of view. More 'Historically accurate information' and not so much 'exciting action or in-depth character feelings' descriptions. :)

I am fortunate to be blessed (or cursed) with a VERY active imagination. So when I read a book, what I see in my mind is usually much better than any movies based off of them.

Lord of the Rings are the ONLY movies that visually exceeded what I saw in my imagination. :)

Yep, that's been my stance on the whole thing. Tolkien was an excellent worldbuilder, historian, and linguist. Just not a very good novelist, IMO.

My favorite non-Tolkien written but Tolkein/Middle Earth thing has to be The Complete Guide to Middle-earth.

I find Shakespeare hard to read, but awesome to see as a play. I feel the Silmarilion works very well in audio form.
