Is a high speed internet modem supposed to be hot to the touch? Because mine is. It approaches the painful side of hot.

(Yeah, I know this is the wrong thread for this but it takes days and days to get a reply in the Computers thread).

Our Centurylink DSL modem gets very warm to the touch.

No, it's not. It's a sign that components are about to go bad. How old is the modem?

There is some irony in that I am sure :-)

I'm not a tech but I'd unplug and let it cool down, machines need a break sometimes too!

I've had it for about 3 and a half years, I think.

Do you know if it has an internal fan? If so, is it running?

I just checked and it doesn't. However, after unplugging and then powering it back up it's still very warm, but somewhat less so that before. It's too late to call my provider (it's a city owned provider that kicks butt). But if it doesn't explode or turn into some weird Transformer I'll call them in the morning.

If it gets very very hot, I'd unplug it for the night when not used.

I think I might do that. I just unplugged it for 15 minutes and then rebooted it. It came up much faster than when I did it for only 2 minutes when it was at its hottest. When I did it then it took over 5 minutes to connect.

Direct a small box fan at it until you (maybe) get a new one.

Will do. My cable company is the modem provider (I didn't buy one of my own) and they will replace it no charge should I need that.

Hey if you got 3 years use out of the same modem, thats pretty good! generally speaking. Technology improves every year. And the old stuff can only keep up for so long.

When I was with COX (Not planning on going back) I did ride on the modem they gave me (the second one)for almost 5 years. (each modem) SO long in fact that they were forcing another new modem on me, because they had upgraded everything else to the point the old modem wouldnt work with their system any more.

Only thing that bothered me about the new modems (There are a LOT of things that bugged me about their service practices) was that they sent me the new modem and expected us to do all the install work. They CHARGED us if we needed to call a tech to come out and do it.

(I didnt need one, but that wasnt the point!) :P

Most companys, if you call them, once they see how old your modem is seem surprised that you havent already gotten a newer one. :)

Heck I'm with LUS fiber now (City owned provider) and we dont even have a modem in the house anymore like all the others. NOW all of the modem-y stuff is mounted to the outside wall of the house, and they ran a cable to the PC main room. (my office)

All of the old modems required rebooting once in a while, which is impossible with this set up. BUT I havent needed it either! :)

I used my old modem for 7 year without any problems. Current modem is serving its fourth year. Still no issues that I could notice.

I wouldn't be surprised that the old one could serve still, but it couldn't handle the speed increase, and had no wi-fi.

So yesterday I learned a tough lesson; You can't make dogs like each other.

Our neighbor down the street has a pure bred German Shepard named Scout. Scout is kind of a beast, what with being well over 100 lb. But we've tried to help Scout and now our dog Galway get acquainted with other dogs. The success for Galways has been...mixed to say mildly. But our neighbor and my mom decided they should try anyway.

So yesterday, as I was prepared to take Galway to another neighbor's yard which is fenced in (I should point out Scout's fence runs concurrent that fence), I asked his owner if they'd like to do a doggie play date. The result were spectacularly bad. I should point out the while there are two adults living in this house, his female owner was more open to the idea than his male one. So naturally when Scout came up the drive, I had had Galway on a lead and fully close by, she nearly fell over as both of them attacked each other. Naturally I managed to pull Galway away...but then Scout got away from her.

So there I was, one lone 41 year old human trying DESPERATELY to keep two dogs separate, one 100+ lb, the other....reasonably 50 in some ways. In the midst of trying to keep them apart, Galway bit my hand. So that didn't help. But we managed (after Scout's owner managed to get back up) to wrangle dogs and head back.

Now while I was crashing from the surge of adrenaline, my brother (who's wedding we had attended previously) offered aid and help in the form of a nice Coke and some crackers, while I started tending to my wounds. Nothing serious, as Galway's bite reflex is not that strong (plus he's not really into biting...I think..) So my hand is healing quite nicely. What I DON'T know is who got my leg. I assume it might be Scout, but honestly Galway could have done it too. In any case...right now Galway is on my least favorite dog list for another 12 hours.

But that's life right?

Damn, that's rough, Tom. Hope you heal quickly.

Ugh, always sad when pups cant get along.

At least you did not have serious injuries!

This is why I like cats.

Freehold,

Honestly, even after having been bitten like 5 times by dogs, I'll STILL stick with dogs over cats.

John,

Well my hand sure is. I think mostly because Galway's bite reflex is either weaker than some...or he just knows what I taste like. :p :)

S-Shadow,

Nope. I'd much worse when my first dog Tucker and I were walking (I was probably about 12 or 13 at time) and one of our neighbor's dog managed to open the screen door. (To be fair, it wasn't a HEAVY screen door...at least not that I recall.) So poor Tucker and I tried to defend ourselves from a Boxer...and I got bit on my left hand. That one still has some very light scarring but I remember thinking "That's a lot of blood!"

These were less so.

So...crazy dog man?

Something like that. I might be a werewolf. Who knows?

I have enough hair I could pass for a werewolf.

I feel that way when I look at a mirror after I've gotten out of the shower.

Mostly though I feel old. :p

Had a great weekend. My game was successfully put back on track after the fiasco of the last one. Everyone had a good time. One of my long distance players came down in person and we went to see "Solo", which I enjoyed.

But the hugest, most hugormous surprise was my dear friend Wendy dropping by. I met her new boyfriend, a really nice guy it seems. And then she goes out to her car and comes back in with box and says, "I heard you were having computer issues". She then gave me a brand freaking new HP notebook. I'm seldom at a lost for words, but all I could do was squeak out "Thank you" over and over.

I have the most extraordinary friends, present company most definitely included.

Awesome!

Sometimes life is bad but sometimes its good too. Glad to see someone having a good weekend :-)

I get Divorced tomorrow so that'll be done with thank god!

Life is okay...but I'd like it more if our dog Galway acted more like Duke did...but I guess that's why I liked Duke.

Galway is going to take a while.

Well, got my games started back up. I get to telework tomorrow because of the Stanley Cup parade. Things are coming up Milhouse!

So remember when I had been forced to separate my/our dog Galway from the neighbor's dog when they both lunged at each other? It gets worse...or better. I guess.

Yesterday evening, around 5, I had taken Galway out and found our neighbor across the street dog was loose. Unlike Scout, Murray is an older dog AND much less confrontational. Plus the fact it was clear he wanted back in his house. So after calling my mom, and putting Galway back in (to keep Murray calm), we managed to get someone from the house to take Murray in. Then came the fateful words. "Take Galway down the street." Which is the direction Scout lives...but you know, like any normal sane person with a dog, you don't consider "Well what if the dog gets loose?" (And by dog I meant Scout.)

So as I'm walking BACK up the hill (I had noticed the gate that kept Scout inside was wide open...but naturally I assumed they had him inside.) I see Scout come barreling up the hillside toward Galway...and then I froze. For like the briefest of seconds, I thought they were going to play nice....and then it happened. Galway didn't like what he did...or something and they both started into each other. Naturally I'm the only adult there...and so for 5 minutes, BY MYSELF, I tried to keep the two dogs from killing each other. (Or more realistically, Scout who weights well over 100 lb to mine which is barely 55 lb)...It was...to say the least a bloody mess and so where my hands. And my shorts. When finally someone guy comes along as I start yelling for help, he and one of the neighbors comes along and helps me to separate me and Galway from Scout.

Neither Galway or I got away unscathed, but Scout wasn't hurt...I think. What I do know is I ended up with a HUGE gash near the middle of my left hand (that's now pretty much isn't much good for fine motor skills or even the occasional rough one, plus it still bleeds...) along with several other bite marks. My right hand, while bit right at the top of my hand where the tendons, bones and nerves were, still was pretty workable...

Galway mean time it looked like he had gone through a meat grinder, having several deep puncture wounds, especially around his eye, his right shoulder and maybe his chest. Basically at that time, I thought he might lose his eye. Fortunately after we (my mom and I) loaded him into the car, the Vet was able to get a clearer picture of his injuries. Right now the left half of his face is pretty much swollen, he's limping and he clearly isn't having fun.

For me, after 6+ hours of going to Medical Express, getting them to bandage me up and telling them I couldn't really move my last two fingers (ring and pinky), going to the nearby hospital where I was only SLIGHTLY tended to by the PA due to I guess stuff, I got meds and then recommendation I talk with one of the orthopedic surgeon specialists who is part of a clinic there., I came home...and basically howled in pain as the Tramadol they gave me DIDN'T kick in (probably because by then I have been going on 7+ hours WITHOUT any major pain management), then I tried knocking myself out via Benadryl and a little Tylenol. But while I could have taken some Ibuprofen, I was told NOT to mix that with Tramadol. So 4 hours later...and eventually thanks to the Ibuprofen and other drugs in my system, I calmed down enough to sleep through the night.

Today, I got a squeezed into see the specialist, who told me basically what I already knew; keep moving my fingers even if it hurt; wash my hands periodically, keep taking my meds (especially the antibiotics) and wait until Tuesday to come back and see how I was doing.

Now you might think "Well Gee Blaine, it could have been worse..." I was certain it was due to two things: One I couldn't really feel my finger tips many times, two: My mom is leaving to go to California for a planned vacation to see a longtime friend of hers. Now fortunately she can still do that because my brother, the one just married, has offered to help me. While I'm by no means incapable, fine motor control, ESPECIALLY when I have to walk two dogs with my left hand... has made things pretty miserable. I can almost turn a doorknob, but it's a chore and effort. So driving...is kind of the same boat. But fortunately Jack will be assisting me in my dog sitting duties... so hopefully he'll be here until my Mom gets back next Wednesday.

So then, what's going to happen to Scout and his owners. Doesn't the vicious animal ordinances apply? Especially with witnesses? The owners basically let a weapon wander loose. In any case, please keep us informed.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thomas, that is so awful! I really hope you and Galway get the medical help necessary for you both to heal. As for the other dog, your city should have ordinances about the thing that happened.

I do my absolute best to look out for unleashed dogs on our walks. It terrifies me to think what might happen should something turn sour like it did with you.

Do as the doctor says and please keep us informed about how things are going.

Scout isn't vicious. At least not intentionally. Certainly he's not been good around other dogs...but generally his owners keep him on his lead and in his yard. As for what I want; I want mostly for this couple to find a nice family farm for Scout, definitely a YOUNG family and/or a young couple. Mostly because he needs obedience training AND someone much younger to handle him.

For the owners, I'd rather they just get a beagle. Or some other smaller dog. They are age respectively, a 68 year old woman that isn't close to 100+ and a 72 old man that while spry...clearly isn't good about being always cautious.

Well, anyway, I hope you heal quickly, Tom.

Cal,

Well I think based on the medical care we both received, I don't think we're going to die or be disabled...mostly.

I honestly don't want the city involved. What I WANT is people to be more responsible and also consider what kind of dog they are getting. Addmittedly I feel like that applied to us as well with Galway...but considering his background, he clearly had more trauma than a pup that had been bred much like a racehorse and paid more for than some used cars.

I'm less terrified and more concerned...but since Galway isn't going to be running any time soon (much less going far from our house), it's less of a concern.

That's my hope too, John. Certainly that and getting my car fixed are two major goals of the rest of 2018.

Trying to pick out colors for my living room. My landlord has offered to buy the paint and help with the actual work but trying to decide, ugh. I have a media wall I want to paint a couple of shades darker than the rest of the walls but there are Just.So.Many colors.

Be careful if you drive, Tom.

Grrrr... Trying to register my new notebook computer with HP's top secret headquarters or whatever it's called. I keep getting a message telling me that the registration page isn't working and to try again later. You'd think a computer company would have better IT than that... lol

5 people marked this as a favorite.

FINALLY. Managed to get my computer registered with HP. That only took a Ouija board in the center of a pentagram sitting on a goat's head to accomplish.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

That's fortuitous indeed. The current GoatHead™ microcontroller firmware that ships in HPs is incompatible with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yes. For the current Goat's head firmware to work, the pentagram has to have lit black candles at the points. The candles have to be made from rendered baby's fat. And the instruction manual has to be recited in backwards Latin. FNORD!

John,

Not driving JUST yet. I have my brother doing both chauffeur and helper for dog walking. But I hopeful to have more motor control and hopefully have my left hand at least 60% by Saturday.

Any particular reason to register it in the first place?

When my friend surprised me with it last weekend she had purchased the three year damages warranty on it. To activate that it needed to be registered with HP.
