That is so cool. I never thought I'd get this excited about linguistics.

Linguistics are an awesome subject. You can easily use it to make simple, yet consistent naming conventions in a fantasy world.

An example: many cultures have a 'son of' naming convention:

Irish: Mc
Scottish: Mac
Norman: Fitz
Scandinavian: sson
Arabic: Ibn
Hebrew: Ben

Ad infinitum.

Now, you could posit a fantasy culture where the 'son of' is Nar. Then when you make a character you could call him Drevin NarFingal. Make 'daughter of' Nara. Then a female could be Drenna NaraFingal.

Perhaps the culture is matrilineal. That makes a man's nephew (sister's son) his immediate heir. You could make 'nephew of' Gar. Then Drevin's nephew would be Hargus GarDrevin.

Perhaps the culture recognizes out of wedlock children with the prefix Har/Hara. Drevin's daughter by his mistress is Saranna HaraDrevin.

Simple, but it adds a nice layer of verisimilitude to the game. Plus, you can use NPC names to give hints on their status and the like.

I tend to model mine after tv/movie characters.

And the Doctor, obviously. ;)

Or disreputable Chicago wizards...

You rang?!? :)

We keep getting sidetracked,... IT'S NOT MY FAULT! (This time,...)

His heroic actions during the Rebellion will live on forever. May the Force be with you, my picanthropodian comrade.

York? Like old York that's like 30 minutes from me?

NEW YORK

why see a castle when you can explore some of the most amazing buildings in the world?

Why see a dragon cave when you can explore the nyc subway system/possum factory?

Exactly that one. It would be much easier for me to reach (not to mention that it would be much cheaper), than that newfangled "New" York of theirs... About two hours of flight to London and then bus through Ye Olde Merry England Manchester and then train going on a hourly basis.

Spring is trying to get me to accept her presence by wearing a princess Elsa outfit.

It's not working.

On the upside, the cold snap has killed pretty much everything, so I get a reprieve on the start of allergy season.

Including all my spring flowers :/

Good, we won't.

Not that I have anything in need of "thanking", it's been pleasantly mid-60s thus far and will be topping over 70 by the end of the week. ^_^

13 hour shift today (6 AM to 7 PM), including two unpaid 45-minute drives. Looks like it's going to be another 50-hour week. Oh, but we "don't get overtime anymore." God, I love my job.

And no work tomorrow. But lots of game prep to do before tomorrow night.

Back in the magic schoolbus today ...

I did have some nice relax time with the Aventyr Bestiaty that came in the mail from a Kickstarter from last year. Some interesting monsters there. I find that monsters are such IN-teresting people

No OT? That's lame. And possibly illegal.

My main job plays fast and loose with the OT. we get paid on a two-week schedule, so I don't get OT until I've put in 85 hours. The 5 extra is a half hour lunch a day they don't make us punch out for :/. Plus, if I work 70 hours on one week and 15 on the next... No OT. I think there's some sketchiness there, but we have no Union, and I have rent to pay..

And this is why in the UK junior doctors are on their 4th strike, to stop being forced into a contract which classifies Saturday as a weekday & not the weekend.

[sarcasm]Yay! Driving a schoolbus into Boston! Huzzah! [/sarcasm]

*climbs up the bus*

Another milestone in my life. Driving a 40-foot school bus from Plymouth to South Boston and back again. No fear (well-OK. Maybe a little fear)
