Interest Check: Mouse Guard RPG (no prior experience required)

Recruitment

Hail all those who are able, any mouse can, any mouse will, but the Guard prevail.

Hi! I'm here checking to see if anybody would be interested in playing in a Mouse Guard RPG play-by-post on these forums. Players new to the RPG are welcome—it's a very simple system that you can easily pick up as you go. Well, unless you're the GM, but fortunately I've agreed to bite that educational bullet.

The Mouse Territories as a whole are tremendously fragile, facing bleak weather, dangerous predators, and more. It is up to an underpaid and critically understaffed order of cloaked mice called the Mouse Guard to help maintain order, protect against predators, and, in general, allow their fellow mice to survive and thrive. Sometimes the danger is direct and violent. Sometimes it requires a different skillset entirely—a collapsed bridge, a flooded town, or even just really bad weather. But to the Mouse Guard, one thing is certain:

It matters not what you fight, but what you fight for.

Damn, I don't have the books but it's been on my list forever!

Ooooh, I promised myself I wasn't going to commit to anything before I got my own game up and running, but you're doing a fine job of tempting me!

Not sure if I'll throw my hat in for sure, but I'd highly recommend any interested parties to consider checking this out. There's some great fun to be had in the world of Mouse Guard, especially if you're a fan of the Redwall series, which Mouse Guard shares some definite similarities in tone with.

No book/s needed! The system is tricky for the GM, but it seems pretty easy for the players to learn. Like I said, the mechanics are fairly simple. I might run the first mission with the pregens, though (Mouse Guard as a game has a pretty episodic "mission" setup for adventures), just to ensure we've got a feel for the system.

Well then...uh, consider me signed up.

Oh my gosh I would PAY to try Mouse Guard! I've had the book for years but never the opportunity to play.

One poopy thing: I've never seen a "mouse" icon for characters. Lots of cats. lots of owls. no mice:(

And you'll have to figure out how the "show what you wrote down at the same time" during combat thing will go in Play-by-post...

*squeak*

Is this a redwall or NiMH type RPG?

I'm thinking that the icons could be represented by just showing something relevant to the mouse—there are plenty of non-creature avatars available. Failing that, do as Macario does. ;)

A note: What lies below won't make much sense to someone unfamiliar with the system. Basically, Mouse Guard has a slightly more complicated rock/paper/scissors system used to handle conflicts. You select your actions in advance, and when it's played in-person, you write them down in advance. I got caught up brainstorming potential solutions.

As for "show what you wrote down at the same time" thing, you could use something like a Google doc that shows when it was edited. Or someone else could hold onto the information.

Worst case scenario, there's always [Spoiler] and the honor system. As Evil Lincoln has often stated when explaining Mouse Guard to me, failure is not something to fear in Mouse Guard. It's just a part of the story—a complication, a twist in direction. Failure isn't even binary—it's never just "succeed or fail". So unlike Pathfinder, where there's a strong temptation to cheat so you can keep doing cool stuff, Mouse Guard is a game where I wouldn't feel that uncomfortable just keeping the stuff to spoilers and trusting players to not take the fun out of it. Because there really is no fun in gaming the system.

Actually, one fairly simple possibility now that I'm thinking about it: Since there's always one GM and one Player choosing the actions, each chooser just hands off the actions to another player to post. The only way to fudge then is by conspiracy, which, frankly, is even more unlikely to me than someone cheating to begin with.

Awesome as NIMH is, I'd have to lean more towards Redwall. But really, it's its own story. Mice are the main protagonists (badgers and otters aren't friends, they're extremely dangerous), and unlike in Redwall where the world seems to be tailored around the mice, Mouse Guard's world is very, very hostile to them. Just a journey from one town to the next can be very dangerous. That's why the Mouse Guard is needed.

I will say this: There is no confirmed magic in Mouse Guard. Whether or not magic will make appearances in my game isn't certain (I don't like to nail myself down), but you won't be likely to be running into any tiny mole wizards and big old dragons.

Bwahahaha!! Ah, and look at him, he's a level 2 wizard too! Sooooo cute!

There are actually at least three mouse avatars, come to think of it (counting Macario's). Here's one I used elsewhere. Then there's the creepy diseased one from RotRL. Then there's the three rats, and 91 options under the "Item" category for more symbolic avatars like mirrors and helmets.

Ratfolk, maybe?

Dotting, veeeeeeeery interested.

Ah. Good to know. But I just used them as a comparison. Redwall where animals rule vs, Minh where they live in the shadows.

Oh, I didn't realize that was what you meant. Sort of a mix? There are no humans, and mice are one of the two only known "organized" species (the other is weasels, but weasels, being predators, are generally jerks, and the mice just recently got out of a war with a nasty weasel warlord). That said, the mice do have to be pretty careful and don't just stroll around in the sun like they do in Redwall. Everything's out to get them. So their settlements are generally hidden, or put in places predators don't usually go.

Bump.

Liberty's Edge

Really interested!

I'm extremely interested - I love the comics and I've really wanted to play the RPG should I ever get the chance.

Sczarni

Bumpity bump. Because this is such a good idea:)

Hmm...

Well, that's a pretty healthy confirmation of interest! I'll put up a proper Recruitment thread over the next few days.

Dark Archive

I believe there are 2 editions of Mouse Guard, I've got the 1st edition, I don't know how/if the 2nd one differs, or if it was just a fancier box-set version?

I couldn't really get my head around how it worked properly in tabletop, though it's been years since I've looked at it. Currently reading the comics (well the graphic novel versions) to my son.

Sczarni

I also have 1st edition. Seems simple, except for combat. I never did understand fully.

I have the second edition, but I haven't heard of any major differences save a few skills.

I used the old Mouse Guard forums to familiarize myself with the rules, and there's little in the second edition to make me say, "Wait, this is completely different, I'm lost."

Sovereign Court

Veeery insterested indeeed.

Never read the rules but I pick up quickly as I go. Always loved the stories.

Alright, head here to sign up!
