So to keep this as spoiler free as possible, there is a pretty major sword later in the path, and the books say to alter it into a weapon that suits your party, if needed.
My players are a monk and a sorcerer, and neither uses weapons at all.
Any entertaining ideas for what to turn it into that could have the same effects/properties, and still make a lick of sense with the story? Worst case scenario I can give it to the rogue I'm playing with the party, but I'd really rather one of the players gets it.

Can your monk use weapons? If so, make it one of those. If not, who says it has to be a sword? Make it an orb or a wand or
Then give it whatever powers you think would make your party cooler to hear about and more fun to play. Voila!

Exalted has some interesting concepts that can easily be stolen to use here, using the Graces possessed by the Fair Folk of that system. Each Fair Folk (basically fey, also called 'Raksha') has five Graces, each of which can be crafted into items. The Sword Grace is one, and fits Briar in its traditional form, but there's also the Cup, Ring, Staff, and Heart Graces, each corresponding to compassion, temperance, conviction, or will, respectively. So a version of the item in question which took the form of a Staff might allow the user to Charm or Dominate other persons, while an item crafted from the villain's Heart Grace might take the form of a gem that enables a caster to easily overpower an enemy's spell resistance and Will saves.

The monk can use weapons, even if the player chooses to fight unarmed, so that's an option. There's even a monk sword, I think - the temple sword? - that they can flurry with and everything.
But yeah, you could easily turn it into an amulet of mighty fists, or a rod that allows spells with attack rolls to decapitate the target on a crit, or something along those lines.
