What did people thing of the new X-files? I saw the first episode and it was a lot of fun. It was great seeing Mulder and Scully again, and I'm interested to see where the new incarnation of the conspiracy is going. Looking forward to tonight's monster of the week episode as well.
It seemed tired.
I am glad to see it return, but a Cap denotes, something has changed in the chemistry of the show, somehow tired indeed applies to both Molder and Scully. I see flashes of the old X Files, but the magic has lessened in the interregnum. I will still watch the mini series, but thus far this is not the X Files return I was expecting.
I set my DVR for it and f****** football preempted it, causing it to record only the first half of the first episode. My hatred for football has grown exponentially.

Despite the issues, I get a bit misty eyed when the original intro comes on.
Honestly, I don't think either of their hearts were in this. Gillian has more dramatically acclaimed work to her credit, and David his own writing and Californication.
I guess they were finally offered enough money to make it worth their time, but I don't get the sense they really wanted to do it.

I actually felt that the tired chemistry between them in the first episode was purposeful, to reflect that their relationship has been severely damaged, and they're no longer a couple. This was not the case as much in the 2nd episode I felt.
Also, from the reports I've read over the years, both of them have been more than happy to do more X-files, but simply didn't have Fox approving a new TV series or movie until recently. Their careers might be why it's only 6 episodes instead of more, but I have never gotten the impression from interviews that they didn't want to.

There seemed to be a couple that the world has beaten into the ground. who fought the good fight and never went anywhere. They just seem to have a resignation about them.
WHICH if we're honest was there in the show too. AND the movies. They see the last 2 decades of their life as kind of pointless. There's talk about the show going for 9 years... but honestly, the last 2-3 or more seasons were pretty rough. Mulder was hit and miss for those seasons and he both agents were replaced with new people that just didn't work.
From what I've seen the actors love the series and love doing them. That's how we got that 2nd movie years after the show finalized. I'd heard they just have trouble getting their schedules in order to be in the same place at the same time.
Hulu has it.
Thanks. Not being a Hulu subscriber, I'll have to wait a few days to see it, but I'll definitely watch it.

I forgot how much gobbledygook they spouted.
Also, what skills does Mulder bring that Scully doesn't? She gas FBI training + doctor training. He seems to have just FBI training. Am I missing something?

Well Mulder brings his background as a profiler + encyclopediac knowledge of paranormal stuff. Granted the last episode didn't really get to use much of that.
So far I am continuing to watch it. I think the stand alones will turn out to be much stronger than these two conspiracy oriented episodes. I truly feels like Xfiles, and given what happened to Heroes things could have been far far worse...
I enjoyed both episodes so far. It just felt like the X-Files of old to me, which is all I wanted. Agree with what was said previously about them being tired due to having the fight mostly beaten out of them. Hopefully the reopening of the X-Files will reinvigorate them more as the series goes on.
Mulder brings his better skills in Knowledge (Paranormal), Perform (Oratory), Sense Motive, Escape Artist and Sleight of Hand. Although Scully wins on Heal, Knowledge (Religion), Handle Animal and Intimidate.
One thing I didn't understand...
WHY was the X-files reopened? There seemed to be a massive jump at that end of that first episode. It kind of went from 'Everything we know is wrong...' to 'By the way the government conspiracy that shut you down 13 years ago is fine with you back again?'
With all the pushback the X-files got years ago and how they were wiped away and forgotten about... I'm just surprised to see them as FBI again. I really thought this 'season' would be them working freelance or something. It should take a bit more work to get everything reinstated again that smoothly O.o
I had to back track to see if I missed an episode.
Because there's no show if they don't get reopened?
Yeah, I couldn't figure out why Mulder and Scully were re-hired by the FBI either, other than maybe Skinner was able to make the call himself, and was just looking for an excuse to get them back on board.
I've just made a conscious decision to not sweat the small stuff. We've only got 6 episodes, I'm just going to assume that they didn't want to spend too long worrying about details and just focus on making the kind of episodes everyone wants to see.

yes.... bigger budget this time around it seems... I can't believe they're just going for 6 shows... what the hell??
I assume its a limited season because Anderson and Duchovny are less interested in doing full seasons of TV than they were when they first started. Also it's fox testing the waters of nostalgia land to see whether the show still have enough legs to be brought back in future seasons or in any form of reboot/new cast
If it does well it wouldn't surprise me if it gets a 10 ep order or something next year. Honestly short seasons seem to mean better quantity nowadays anyway.
Maybe they're just following the BBC model?
I just hope they don't follow the example of Luther: 6, 4, 3, 2 episodes in series 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Dunno if it was on purpose, but you could see Horned Lizard Man's real bottom lip, I am confused, what happened to the dark and cynical nature of the original X-Files? I laughed as the episode last night WAS funny, but funny is not what I watched the original X-files for.

Dunno if it was on purpose, but you could see Horned Lizard Man's real bottom lip, I am confused, what happened to the dark and cynical nature of the original X-Files? I laughed as the episode last night WAS funny, but funny is not what I watched the original X-files for.
Almost every season of the X-files has had one completely off the wall humorous episode. This was the one for the mini-season.

True, else we would never have watched Mulder eat an entire sweet potato pie in the original seasons, point taken. Guess this last one was just a bit sillier than I expected.

When music was good, fashion was flannel, and even the pessimists were looking forward to something.
Now I miss the 90's even more than normal, long live flannel, Doc Martins, and X-Files.
Now that I reflect on that episode, the "were-human" theme actually dug pretty deep, it just does it with soft foam claws.
I've been enjoying this series... but does anyone else think that they are just 'showing' too much? Aliens, lizard men, spaceships...
The original series had stuff like that, but it was more kept to the shadows, or dead, or inert... something that even after you got a glimpse or saw a picture... the audience AND the characters were STILL unsure what they saw.
This year has a lot more special fx and cgi... but it really feels detrimental to the mood.
Though I'm not really sure i'd WANT them to go back to the 'I've spent my whole life looking and never found anything' trope either... So i'm a bit torn. This one seems to be a pay off of the last 20 years of mysteries...

Duchovny said in an interview neither he or Anderson were interested in doing a full 22-episode season. They talked about doing a 13-episode season, but their schedules only ended up allowing a 6-episode season.
They both said they are open to doing more.
If cable has taught me anything, it's that drama and mystery type shows are better in 10-12 episode seasons, anything past that, and s+#$ gets convoluted, fast.
Just an observation i've had.

I kind of like the pale blue jacket and the straw hat the were-human was wearing. I think that was a shout out.
I think the episode was even better for Kiwis...
If cable has taught me anything, it's that drama and mystery type shows are better in 10-12 episode seasons, anything past that, and s@%+ gets convoluted, fast.
Just an observation i've had.
I'm the opposite. I like a good long 22 episode season for my shows. The more the merrier. With the 10 episode 'short seasons' They're either trying to cram too much stuff in... or more often WAY too drawn out. Worst of all, if they are doing the 'one case a year' type of detectives, you know full ahead that the first 8 episodes are going to be a waste. There will be 4-5 people spotlighted for the crime, but with 6 episodes left to go, you KNOW they aren't the killer.
There have been a LOT of shows lately like that. Broadchurch, Killing, Messengers, Whispering Pines... Zoo... Dig.... 10 hour mini-series that if they just cut out the red herrings and false leads would have been a 2 hour movie and told just as good a story.
Heck, 12 monkeys WAS a 2 hour movie and it was handled a bit better then the series was. There is a fine line between character development and padding.
As for series that are NOT just one story.. but have some kind of meta-plot in the background. I really like the occasional 'non-metaplot' episodes BETTER. I really like the 'side quests' just as much as the main story.

Yeah Darrin Morgan did this ep, who did some of the more memorable comedic episodes: Clyde Bruckman's final repose, War of the Coprophages, etc.
CSM has become the Abominable Dr. Phibes, and recruited Agent Reyes to act as his Vulnavia.
Did he drink through his neckhole?

My wife was so annoyed by the season finale last night, I am ashamed to say it amuses me. I was betting it would go that way, and I know she can't stand open arcs.
I was annoyed with it, too, but I had kind of disconnected from it when it was another plague episode. I'm not entertained by sick people, so I wasn't paying 100% attention to that episode.
