Spellscar Drifter is now a good archetype

Dexterity to damage is pretty overrated in my opinion. I'd never want to lower my SR.

Casual Viking,

We can't both agree that Spellscar drifter is obviously a mistake.
I agree that the likelihood of errata for it is pretty low.
Because that's what it is, it's a PFS houserule, PFS isn't official Paizo. And to say or imply that Spellscar Drifter had changed officially would have been dishonest.

Really, dude? Really? The Cavalier-as-a-gunslinger archetype, who gains class abilities specifically requiring the use of his firearm against the target of his challenge, doesn't benefit from challenge on his firearm attacks, and you won't agree that it's obviously yet another writer-hasn't-read-the-rules f*%~up?

I think our disconnect goes all the way down to how language works.

SR?

I kind of agree with SW here. Your Dex as a Dwarf prolly isn't gonna start higher than 16. 3 levels of Cavalier are worth 4.5 average challenge damage for a Dwarf anyhow so the net gain of dex to damage isn't that huge.

Remember this actually isn't a gunslinger where everything works off Dex. You have challenge's to hit bonus to compensate for your lower to hit and Challenge damage means at the mid levels you are easily dealing more damage per hit than a gunslinger especially if you go Dwarf.

So regarding Grit. Going through the Deeds I was really not that impressed with most of them. Sure quick clear is great (although personally I'd argue once your gun misfires you can also just go round whacking face with your handle as an improvised weapon). And Deadshot is also very nice but also very expensive as it's calculated per shot? This is why I'm debating dumping CHA (your Grit pool with a 14 Charisma is 1 higher than with a charisma of 5)and to rely on plume of panache to help me through sticky situations.

Equipment. Seems like for the purposes of PFS the Pistol is your best bet. It has a d8 damage die, low miss fire and 20 range which while not great is gonna have to suffice (any ways to increase this magically?). The main reason for sticking with Pistol is that it's one handed and that the combination of rapid reload and rapid shot means you can fire full throttle which is important when you consider challenge damage.

Armor. I don't really see any reason (besides super high dex which you don't really need all that much) to not go full throttle here and rock the heavy armor (mithral Tatatmi-DO suckers!) plus a buckler for the full service package. You might be able to pump AC so high that AoO become a nuisance and you can still go round blasting while surrounded by foes.

AC estimatition at level 9:

+2 Mithral Tatami-Do +9
DEX +5
+2 Buckler +3
The mad hat +1
Ring of Protection +1
Amulet of natural armor +1

=AC 30 good but far from unhittable :(

Well, You work from range, 30 at level 12 with good CON should be more than enough, particularly considering you have good touch AC and SR.

The question is whether you want mounted combat... It is an action to use it.

Again what do you mean by SR? Spell Resistance? And if so where's it coming from?

You can use your horse in accordance to Lasthoth's Ranger guide without using action and without any feat investment however you do not have the same kind of range as a longbow so it prolly wont work quite as well.

If you want to utilize your mount to full effect two things I noticed.

A)Spellscar Drifter stacks with Beast Rider which loses expert trained and heavy armor.

B) Halflings who are mechanically among the best options for this archetype also have a new Alternate Racial Feature which is similar to Expert trainer and can give your mount +2 int at level 1.

Dex to damage, Challenge, 2WF comes online at level 11.

I probably won't play this build. It doesn't come online till pretty late, but near end of APs, this character will be destroying everything.

Nice build. It is missing out on Precise Shot however. The whole TWF stick does have a certain appeal I must admit.

Spell Resistance comes from the archetyPe

Ah ok... doesn't come online before 12 which is why I ignored it :)

Ah the gear you had posted looks like it is meant for level 12

Sorry, old thread - not even sure this is the right forum for my question... Seems like the conclusion on this thread is that Spellscar Drifter does/should get challenge damage when using firearms. Problem is, I have a Spellscar Drifter setup in Hero Labs, and activating the challenge ability in that app does not add the bonus damage to firearms (or any ranged weapon) in the calculated display. Anyone have any idea how to resolve that?

Add it manually, or don't use Herolabs, or complain to the maker? This isn't a problem with PF, it's with your software.

You're not wrong. HL must be limited by the actual printed material (i.e. might not take into account unpublished errata discussed only online). I knew it was a long shot that anyone here might have run into the same problem.

I'm okay with manually managing.
