Does Feybane Bypass DR?

My Paladin just got a +2 Greatsword of Feybane (Bane against Fey). The weapons deals an extra 2d6 against Fey.

Now, here's my question, does this bypass a Fey's DR? Our GM wasn't sure and played it like it did.

The greatsword is NOT made of Cold Iron, but is specifically effective against Fey, so does this bypass its DR?

Thanks for the help!

Does it say it bypasses DR?

Your Paladin's left big toe will bypass the DR if you Smite them.

However, Bane only grants additional damage, not any sort of DR avoidance in and of itself.

It doesn't pass DR. Kind of a waste to make a Feybane weapon that isn't Cold Iron.

If it's a standard bane weapon, that grants it an extra +2 bonus against fey in addition to the +2d6 damage. That makes it a +4 enhancement bonus. Weapons with an enhancement bonus of +3 or greater automatically bypass DR/cold iron or DR/silver. So this should work.

In order to overcome damage reduction over cold iron, you either need a cold iron weapon or a weapon with at least a +3 bonus. Since the bane quality treats the weapon as having an enhancement bonus 2 higher than normal when attacking fey (for a total of +4), that means it does overcome cold iron damage reduction but only while attacking fey with it.

@Arachnofiend - I agree, that's why I was wondering. In the book (Kingmaker), it states that it's Fey Bane, not Cold Iron...Kingmaker features a lot of fey, which is why I was wondering why it would be in there if it doesn't actually bypass DR.

@Saldiven - Oh, yes. If I Smite, I can go to town with Fey with this weapon, I'm quite happy about that.

@DominusMegadeus - No, the book does not say that it does, but again, it seems pointless to have a weapon effective against Fey that can't bypass its DR.

@Matthew Downie - Oh cool! That's what it is a +2 Bane weapon, which would make it a +4. Do you have a book I can look that up in so I can show the GM?

CampinCarl9127 - Thanks!

This is a little known rule that can really save your bacon.

Any weapon that is a +3 or better is treated as cold iron/silver but only for overcoming DR
Any weapon that is +4 or better is the same for adamantine as well
Any weapon that is +5 is the same for any alignment

So: your +2 feybane counts as +4 (bane increases the effective enhancement bonus by 2)vs fey, and so counts as silver, cold iron, and adamantine for the purposes of overcoming DR (but not for any other purpose).

So, your sword would overcome the dr of those things, but not, for example, some Fey that has DR 10/bludgeoning or 10/law.

Separately, if you smite evil an evil creature, you bypass all of that creatures DR as a paladin (it is part of the smite evil class feature.)

I think everyone just forgot that Bane adds +2 to the effective enhancement against creatures the bane applies against. I didn't remember that.I don't recall if it had that in 3.5 and that's where most of my memories of the quality are associated.

Awesome stuff! Thank you all for the help. Does anyone know what book those rules are in so I can read up on it?

Silver Crusade

It's in the Core Rule book in the back somewhere, I forgot where they hid it off the top of my head.
