The good doctor is in.

Now this I can get behind.

A bit subdued (the collar, for instance, is way shorter), but still very true to the look of the comics.

I still wish the Eye of Agamatto was the Reality gem, and that's how Stephen's able to perform "magic."

I will miss the collar-horns, but it's not a deal breaker; glad to see Cumberbatch in the role.

Looks pretty classy! I'm very excited to see the Marvel Studios talent on some fantasy stuff.

Details emerge surrounding Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams' Doctor Strange roles

My own thoughts on the Mads' character are either Kaluu or Nicholas Scratch.

Scarab Sages

Also, Chiwetelu Ejiofor as Baron Mordo - AWESOMESAUCE!

Been looking forward to this since it was announced, glad to see the first pics look cool. And that in an interview Cumberbatch indicated he was paying attention to and working on the details of the somatic gestures he'll be making on screen. Not that I don't expect that level of attention to detail from him, but nice to read.

I'd hope Mads is the Nightmare. Best option would be that he is Dormammu, but I don't think they are going there...yet. But Nightmare would be cool.

If you watched toward's the end of Winter Soldier when the Hydra/Shield Kill everyone thingy was turned on, Dr. Strange was one of the designated targets.

I am so frigging happy that the BBEG is not Dormammu.

I can't wait for this one.

Same here. While I love Dormammu, he's the kind of character they need to build up to.

only thing I've seen him in was Serenity, but I've wanted to see more of his work just from that role.

He was in The Martian earlier this year. Before that, the only thing (other than Serenity) I've seen him in was Love Actually (my wife forced me see it).

Love actually is a beautiful movie.

He was in Red Belt.

I'd really rather it wasn't. Or at least, if it is, it's not the main source of Strange's "magic". Let him actually be a Master of Magic, not just a guy with a powerful gizmo.

I hear they can afford it these days.

Yes, I will be pretty upset if they pull another Thor on us here... The magic side of Marvel should remain... ya know... magical.

I have to agree with Hama and Aberzombie's wife here.

And actors from that movie are simply amazing and have been is dozens of other staring roles from The King's Speech to Game of Thrones to Harry Potter to Pirates of the Caribbean to Underworld to The Force Awakens to the bloody lead in the Walking Dead.

There is a lot of subtle humor, from the Portuguese father and daughter's banter at the proposal to the British Secret Service having a rich baritone, I love nearly every scene in that movie.

There have been half a dozen American films that have tried to duplicate this film and none have come even a fraction of the way close.

If only due to bad memories of how marvel has handled magic before. Plot holes galore. Then again, maybe I shouldn't complain....

It's not like there wasn't magic in the Thor movies, despite also having some "science indistinguishable" handwaving as well. It's really hard to write off the tricks Loki was pulling especially in the second movie as anything else.

Ah, true. I'm looking forward to some arcane casters rather than just divine, though.

Dark Archive

Yeah the Marvel Martial Classes have been hogging the spotlight.

:)

+1 on liking "Love actually". Great cast, great writing, great chemistry, great storytelling.

BeCum looks good here. I have next to know knowledge of Strange other than the animated movie a few years ago so I have no real hopes one way or the other for this movie.

I found it to be annoying and essentially a live action (bad) romance novel. The only redeeming part of the movie was Bill Nighy - because, well, he's just badass.

Scarab Sages

I wonder if they're going to do a bit of character tinkering with Rachel McAdams, maybe make her a movie version of Morganna Blessing?

I can't remember, but I think there was another doctor friend introduced in the miniseries The Oath, from back in '06-'07. That could be another possibility.

Scarab Sages

And if they are introducing Baron Mordo, but not as the main villain, I wonder if they're planning to reserve him for a future BBEG role.

And, will he say "Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth!"???

That does seem weird to me. Unless they're just going to set him up in the origin sequence and then not use him in the main plotline.

Hopefully they'll play the origin fairly straight. Even with a gender swapped Ancient One (Tilda Swinton will be great there). Also a good point to hint towards Dormammu, if they're not going to use him as the main villain.

I hope he at least uses one or two of the classics, like Crimson Bands of Cytorrak or Shields of the Seraphim (Bolts of Bedevilment, Winds of Watoomb, Images of Ikonn, Vapors of Valtorr, etc. I'm sure there are many more I'm not remembering off the top of my head!).

I always found invoked and ritual spellcasting more interesting than the telepathy/telekinesis brand of 'magic' that you usually see on Charmed/Buffy/Supernatural type shows, and in the case of Marvel magicians, very much prefer all the 'Boozy Boasts of Cayden!' style invocations.

I was not sold on Rumblepatch as Dr. Strange (preferring Marvel sticking to less 'flavor of the month' casting, since up-and-comers like Hugh Jackman and Tom Hiddleston seem to thrive in these superhero roles, while established 'name' actors like Halle Berry and Anthony Hopkins, not so much), but he is looking fine in the outfit.

I like throwing Tilda Swinton into that role. She's a terrific actress and can really do the part justice. However, there is a small part of me that wishes they would have gotten some old Tibetan actor to play the part.

I still think the one thing they did right with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was to get Naseeruddin Shah to play Captain Nemo.

That I do agree with.

I'm also sad there seems to be no Wong. As stereotyped as the character is, I was always fond of him.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (the loves struck kid) was the First Order Petty Officer Thanisson (presumed killed by Finn) as well as Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones, and is the voice as Ferb Fletcher in Phineas and Ferb, and Keira Knightley was Sabé in Episode I and Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Scarab Sages

Doing a bit of research, IMDB shows Michael Stuhlbarg playing Nicodemus West.

Very interesting.....

Especially considering there are a multitude of incredible actors who could easily fill that role.

agreed with everything but Wong. The character is badly outdated and borderline offensive, though he sure as hell ain't ebony white, to be fair.

Yeah, I loved that film. It's a fantastic movie about real world martial arts in the US. I didn't like the MMA focus, but the depiction of the school and the troubles staying open was great.

She did not, Thomas Brodie-Sangster did. I just added her as she was in a Star Wars film and hard to pin point. As was Liam Neeson but that was obvious.

Unfortunately I think they're going to try to tie it with the whole Stones of Power meta-arc they've been working with from the first of the Marvel movies.
