Becoming a Hellknight

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

It never made sense to me that one has to kill a devil to bcomee a Hellknight. Hellknights are lawful. Devils are lawful. It seems to me that a prospective Hellknight should have to destroy a demom.

Yeah, destroying a demon is nice and all, but what better way to prove that you're worthy to uphold the law than by besting that which the Hellknights model themselves after? In essence, you have to prove that you're more worthy to uphold the law on the material plane than even a devil. It makes a certain sense to me.

Well, if you managed to kill the mother of demons, Hellknight Humanoid Resources might be willing to make an exception for you . . . And if you managed to do that and Hellknight Humanoid Resources still didn't budge, you probably wouldn't care anyway -- or if you did, you could just wipe them off the face of the planet, or at least require a bunch of other deities to gang up to stop you from doing so.

They probably just have a caster summon one using Summon Monster, and since they're lawful, they can't cast a summon monster spell to summon a demon, which would make it a chaotic spell.

Because most clerics of lawful deities cannot summon demons. At least if I am remembering my alignment descriptor mechanics.

Sure, you might get wizards, but I would imagine that the fervent believers of lawful deities are more common in the ranks of most orders than arcane spellcasters.

Devils are just easier for them to get ahold of.

Another reason might be a subtle jib at house Thrune. Remember- Hellknights are dedicated to law, not Asmodeus. At least ostensibly. As far as Joe Smoe Skullcrusher is concerned, all the hell and devil junk is just there to make them scary so that villainous skum know not to mess with them. Hellknights tend more toward Lawful Neutral, and there are even some (misguided) paladins in certain orders (such as Godclaw).

So at least some of the hellknight orders are on bad terms with house thrune, since they were a necessary ally when Cheliax was taken over, but they were too powerful and well regarded to simply get rid of afterwards. So they are a thorn in Thrune's side.

Your tongue, hold it.

Paladins can be worshippers of Abadar and Iomedae, stringintly Lawful patrons. There is an Oath against Chaos that Paladins can take enforcing even more of a code on themselves.

There is nothing misguided about a Paladin who feels he does the most Good by being a bastion of Law. That's the whole point of Paladins in the first place.

Note that certain orders (Order of the Nail, Order of the Pyre, Order of the Rack; Order of the Crux, Order of the Coil) are unlikely to be compatible with a paladin as a member. Their mindsets are likely to clash with a LG alignment.

Other orders (Order of the Chain, Order of the Gate, Order of the Scourge; Order of the Pike, Order of the Scar) are possibly compatible for a paladin member, although paladins would need to be careful. Paladin members of these orders would probably be less "extreme" in combating the order's chosen corruption.

Then, there are the orders (Order of the Godclaw; Order of the Torrent) that are mostly compatible with a paladin as a member. Paladins would have few difficulties with membership in these orders.

I forget where it's said, but I remember seeing the Order of the Scar called out as the other majority-good Hellknight order (along with the Torrent).

Order of the Nail actually has a LG Centaur, Maidrayne Vox, as their Mistress of Blades. I've heard that Orders generally give their Paladin members assignments that won't spark a Good vs. Law thing, because it's worth the power and good PR a Paladin brings to your cause.
