Shaman Hex Question

Rules Questions

I have a player looking to run a shaman and I am having trouble grasping the mechanics of the way it gets hexes. Can someone help? Specifically, I don't get if it can only know the hexes granted on the class ability table or if it gains "free uses" somehow. Thanks!

You start with 0 hexes known.
You learn 1 hex whenever you gain a hex(like chant or evil eye), for shaman's they gain their first at lv2.
You can use that hex as much as you want.

If that didn't answer your questions try again, it's kinda hard to understand what you're asking about.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hexes for Shamans come in 3 flavors; General Hexes, Chosen Spirit Hexes, and Wandering Spirit Hexes.

General Hexes are the ones available to any given Shaman. Spirit Hexes are from their Chosen Spirit list (or "primary" spirit list, if you will).

The ones gained at 2nd, 4th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 16th, 18th, and 20th level can all be selected from General Hexes or Chosen Spirit Hexes. Same regard for the Extra Hex feat, if selected.

At 6th level, the Shaman gets Wandering Hex, which allows them to choose from any of their Spirits for that day (Their primary Chosen Spirit or their Wandering Spirit of the day). At 14th, they may select two in this regard.

So this wandering hex gives them an additional known hex for the day? And wandering spirit gives them access to additional known spells for the spontaneous and prepared casting?

Correct. They may change the Wandering Hex every time the Shaman prepares spells for the day.

And yes, for the "Spirit Magic" ability, the Wandering Spirit will give them new options for their Spirit Magic slot. Based on what Spirit is chosen.

Spirit Magic is out of their spontaneous slot only unless they have the Fluid Magic Hex.

Correct!

You know it says the parent classes are Oracle and Witch, but it really feels like a juiced up Cleric to me.

Hexes and such? Totally from the Witch. But it's a prepared spellcaster, Wisdom-based (for spells, anyway), and the Spirit Magic gives you a bonus spell slot from 2 choices (much like Domains). Even the Spirit/Greater Spirit Abilities somewhat resemble the Domain Abilities gained at later levels.

What exactly did it inherit from the Oracle? I mean, yeah the Spirits/Hexes have a similar set-up with Mysteries/Revelations. That's about it.

This class also catches some flack for having a "lacking" choice of Divine Spells. I would have to greatly disagree. While the naked Shaman Spell List looks like it's missing some key Divine Spells, it does have some powerhouses. Just glancing it over, it gains access to all 3 types of powerful magic; Arcane, Divine, and Nature. I like to call out "Nature" magic even though it is a Divine source, mainly because the spell lists from Ranger/Druid are vastly different from Paladin/Cleric.

For example, Entangle, Sleep, and Bless are all available from Level 1.

But there's more! You're a prepared Divine Caster. Which means you can become a very new type of spellcaster each and every day if you so choose (which gets even crazier with Wandering Spirits). And you know your entire list! No downtime required.

In case that list isn't enough, your choices in Spirits will assist you in this regard, as well as having some hexes (like Arcane Enlightenment) to offer choices you didn't have before. And some favored class bonuses on top of that.

This may be the most modular class ever thought of in all of Pathfinder.

It does look to have a lot of utility. With the right amount of prep...could ALMOST out Batman the wizard.

Almost.

Interestingly enough, it gets plenty of use from all 3 Mental Ability Scores. In case you ever roll high for those 3, Shaman may be a rather appealing choice.
