Daverin Hosk: GoblinSlayer

Rise of the Runelords

I must have done such a good job building up the impending goblin/Nualia threat that my players (a party of 4) decided they needed to recruit some NPCs to aid them on the thistletop raid.
Shalelu was the obvious choice, but she had resupplied and left after the grim news from Mosswood section. So who is left?
After killing Koruvus in the Catacombs, the Half Orc Sorceror/Barbarian, decided to sell the ears to Daverin. Daverin made such an impression on him, that the party immediately asked him to accompany them to Thistletop.
Even though it was difficult finding someone to oversee the stables while he is away, Daverin agrees. I'm playing him as a grizzled old man who loves the opportunity to relive some of his youth.
It's been pretty funny so far as the PCs have to wait for Daverin to add to his goblin ear necklace after every kill. A couple of the more squeamish characters are starting to doubt his sanity after seeing the amount of glee he gets in goblin killing.
Has anyone else used Daverin in a similar way?

Not as you have done.
But IMC Daverin was introduced to them as the go-to person who buys goblin ears for 1sp/ear--what he would do with them? Nobody knows...

You should have seen the glee in my players' eyes every time they killed a goblin and took turns in cutting their ears off.

Ruyan.

yep, as interesting as I tried to make Daverin, in the end he just turned into a money exchange machine for my group.

If I recall, he nails them to a rafter in the stables. Daverin's not exactly the most stable individual.

My PCs convinced him to go scouting on the goblins - he ended up in Thistletop as a Prisoner/soon-to-be food supply. They rescued him just in time...

Daverin is mentioned in Pathfinder Comics Origins that is centered around Harsk, if you need some info on his personality.

So my group loved Daverin because of the free cash. I gave 1 gold per pair of ears (probably too much) and my PCs went to TOWN on the goblins.

They actually brought the head of a goblin chief to Daverin and he offered 25 gold for it I think. He then invited him into the stable and asked them to come into the hayloft... where I got to describe the hundreds of ears nailed to the rafters... the paladin got a bit shifty.

The party lost it a bit when he went over to his chest and pulled out the pickled goblin head.... and an empty jar. They quickly made up excuses to leave and got out with their dirty dirty gold.

Eh, those prices aren't all that much in the grand scheme of things. Honestly, since the beginning of the AP is a bit stingy on gold, it's probably not a bad idea to push out some wealth to the PCs, just so they don't feel gold-starved until they make it to Thistletop.

I agree and disagree.

Because the campaign is gold light it makes a balanced price that gives your PCs some light at the end of the tunnel.

I disagree because the PCs can get the feeling that this is the only source of gold and they can become much more blood thirsty than they normally would be. (My PCs were trying to decide what to do with captured goblins and the value of the ears became a deciding factor in a couple cases. Greed points. Greed points for everyone!!)

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it should be considered.

When I played, we actually interacted with Daverin quite a lot and I really loved him as a character. The really funny part was one of our party got really concerned after we took a goblin to him to be questioned. Our DM described the questioning very well.

After that, our party member became obsessed with finding out what happened to make Daverin hate goblins so much, and when the player had to quit the game, he said that his character was so concerned with Daverin that he chose to leave the party in an attempt to help Daverin heal from whatever trauma the goblins caused to him.

Now that I'm DMing my own RoTRL game, I was so looking forward to finding out what had caused his hatred of goblins, but I haven't found it yet unfortunately.

Hellow tall people.

Even if my party have looked for some help, this NPC hasn't been one of their choices. I think this is caused because i let my players do non lethal damage without penaltys and a man fond in buying goblin's ears is not their first choice.

However, Belor Hemlock is actually helping the group in Twistletop. The sister of one of my player's (who's character is actually death) get into the sergeant position, and when Belor noticed about the death of the young man (this player's character) he decided to step in and help the group in the fight.
