Advice wanted, please, regarding online job applications

Off-Topic Discussions

Hi all,

When filling out an online application form, obviously it makes sense to fill out replies to the longer questions offline. Assume you've filled in details about everything else, including a question about strengths.
Regarding a question like "What skills and experience make you suitable for this role?", what is it after exactly?
Do they want you to cut and paste the education and employment parts of your resume/CV, along with a wordier explanation of skills, or what?

It wants you to give a 2nd order answer. Ie, it wants you to research the skills needed to do the job you are applying for and then reflect upon your bank of experience and then relate to them your experience and how that is applicable to the job they are hiring for. This question is basically the catch-all for the "bachelors degree OR COMMENSURATE EXPERIENCE." They want you to detail that experience.

Thank you, BigD.

That helps. So, it's the wordier answer.

Is it OK to repeat examples that you might have given in other questions?

If you are giving examples you want to use different examples for each question. So, that may need some unpacking.

Here are some thoughts of mine:

You are applying for a job at best buy (for instance) and they say give an example of s time you provided excellent customer service.

Your answer shouldn't be, "I provided excellent customer service when I worked at Fry's."

It SHOULD be, "I had a customer I was helping find the products she needed, she really needed a widget in 18 hours for her job-thing. We realized that the only widget that would do the job-thing was out of stock at our location so I arranged to transfer one from another store. After my shift I drove to the other store and then brought the widget to the customer at her work so she would be able to use it first thing in the morning."

So, you shouldn't use an example twice, which is made easier by using the second type of example instead of the first one.

Thanks again.

No problem, good luck!

Wow -- I totally have nothing useful to add. Maybe it's the field, but when I apply for jobs, I upload a resume and give them some references, they call the references and ask "Is this guy Gersen as good as he says?" and assuming they say "yes" I end up with a phone interview/real interview/job. I've never had an application with questions other than "Are you legally entitled to work in the U.S.?" and "Are you a felon?"

Hi Kirth.
Well, it's probably intentional, because having to spend a long time on a massive application will reduce the number of applicants for the particular jobs! ;)
