Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hello Pathfinder community!

So I have just come back from an evening of my first play through of Pathfinder: ACG. It was amazing fun! I am so happy to buy a game that seems to be extremely challenging but lots of fun to play!

I would like to ask for your assistance however, as I am sure that many of you are seasoned players now. I am currently going to be playing with my two friends, both of whom I am pretty sure will be playing with Ezren and Seoni in our future games together. I on the other hand am not sure who I should play as. all the characters seem like great fun in their own different ways.

So would anyone be able to give me a quick idea on which characters might be good to play alongside a mage and wizzard? Or just general tips to make our play throughs together more team orientated?

FYI: it looks like I'll soon be buying the first character expansion packs to make the choice tougher!

Many thanks!

With that setup, I'd leave them to their mastery of Int and Cha, and either go melee (armor + weapons and such) or divine; so Lini, Kyra, Valeros, Seelah would probably be my preferred list there.

Great purchase (and future purchases)! I'd say your group is weak in a few areas. Which is ok, but filling in some of those gaps and differentiating yourself from them will probably be the most rewarding. You'll fit over cards less if you don't want the cards they want. And if you have skills they don't, you'll be able to take care of what they can't.

Your weaknesses are mostly Strength/Melee, Divine, Dexterity/Ranged. A couple of characters can take care of two of those weaknesses:

1. Seelah. She'll give you Strength/Melee and Divine. She'll only have one spell, so you'll probably want a Cure to start with (Seoni will really want you to have that).
2. Kyra: Divine in spades, and not bad in Strength/Melee. She'll give you more spells and lots of healing.
3. Lini: Arguably the most powerful character ever created. She'll give you Divine and can use her power to get Strength and Dexterity.
4. Lem: He'll give you Divine, and ok Dexterity. You've already got Seoni, so his Diplomacy won't fill any gaps. But he can also make everyone better.

If you want to run the risk of not having any healing (which can make Seoni pretty vulnerable), Valeros has great Strength and above average Dexterity.

I think I'd recommend any of the first 3.

Good luck on your adventure.

Thanks Keith, I like the look of Kyra, generally like the idea of being a healer too...Lini looks cool with her ally synergy too! I'll give them a go.

Thanks hawkmoon. As I mentioned, Kyra and Lini interest me greatly...I like the idea of healing a lot as I was at 0 cards in my deck with Harsk when we played. Though I enjoyed his ranged assistance in checks

I am a noob to the game, only buying it a few weeks ago, so I have a few questions I cannot seem to find an answer:

1) Can you use 2 one-handed weapons in a combat check, for example 2 hand crossbows?

2) Can you use more than one spell during a combat check?

3) When exactly do you die? For example, if I have 3 cards in my hand but my hand size is 5, and I have nothing in my deck, am I dead since my deck does not have enough cards for me to draw what I need?

4) what is the point of Balazar the summoner? I dont understand what he does.

Sovereign Court

1) Only if the card explicitly says you can. For example, a dagger has an extra power that you can only play while playing another weapon. Cards do what they say and don't do what they don't say. Certain cards also explicitly prevent using them with a two handed weapon, usually shields. There is no assumption that you can use all your hands. One card per type, unless a card specifically says it's an exception.

2) No. Only one card that says "for your combat check" can be used, regardless of if it's a weapon, spell, etc. On top of that, each player can only play one card of each type. So you can't play Acid Arrow and Aid, because that is two spells. You can't play Acid Arrow and Longsword, because that's two cards to determine which skill you use. However, you can play Acid Arrow and another character plays Aid

3) As soon as you have to remove a card from your deck and can't. Whether it's drawing, burying, banishing, etc., doesn't matter. In your example, yes, you die.

3) only when you actually need to draw. Usually end of turn. If you can be cured before that you are not dead.

The other questions look answered.

Most of the rules and "Can I do this?" can be answered by looking at reading the cards (and rules) carefully.

Cards do what they say, they don't do what they don't say.

Balazar is pretty neat. He has a Padrig the attack chicken who lets him ace at strength checks (and by proxy combat checks).

He can't play weapons or attack spells and use padrig, but he does get to roll his strength die as normal AND then add his arcane skill (which at base gets him d6+d10+2 - not bad at all for a squishy wizard)

The other power that sort of ties to his Summoner class is that when he defeats and then banishes monsters, they go to his hand, and then he can use them to power Padrig even more (read Padrig's card). This doesn't work on summoned monsters (yet) or cards that tell you put them somewhere else rather than banishing them (I'm looking at you, Giant Fly).

The downside is he banishes attack spells when he casts them (most arcane spellcasters can recharge them).

Balazar is very good on Base scenario 5 (the last one) - cos those Unfettered Eidolon's become his meal.

Scarab Sages

One note I would add on character choice:
Different characters have very different styles of play. Some characters are very self-sufficient and others aren't. A character like Tarlin can do good damage and heal himself and others. Merisiel can just evade everything she doesn't like. Lem, though, generally needs to be paired with someone who can help take on combat.

Some characters are very good at helping other players; others need more help to shine. Lem is a great helper, as is Alahazra. Seltyiel is a character that needs help from others to really do the massive damage he's capable of doing.

In my experience, different players tend to enjoy these styles to a varying degree. It may take a little bit for people to figure out how they like to play the game, but it's worthwhile thinking about the different styles of play (helper, bruiser, spellcaster, etc.), because in my experience everyone at the table has more fun when people are getting to do the things in the game that they find really enjoyable.
