Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

well here is a question about an oldie, I'm still going through rise of the runelords, have now made it to the road through xin shalast scenario, I will add I have bought the errata pack, so the wording as far as I know should be correct, however the scenario, to me reading it, is mildly confusing, I'm sure I'm over thinking it, but in my determination to try and not do anything wrong, I don't have a choice but to overthink it

anyways, so the issue is, I don't exactly understand what the scenario expects, like for 2 players, we will be using 4 locations, but while the rules talk about putting the villain next to the scenario and such, they don't mention what that does with the henchman count and stuff, so since he goes next to the scenario, does that mean a stack of 4 wardens of runes gets dealt into the 4 different locations? or would the count be 3 of the henchmen and the villain, which I guess would leave one locations empty? which I assume isn't right?

also, the part that says when attempting to close a location, the villain uses his power, I assume that means the listed power on him ANYTIME we try to close a location, and that the power works the same way as written on the card, meaning it can affect people that aren't the guy closing the location?

and lastly, my confusion with beating the scenario, since there are no special rules about winning, I assume the goal is to still defeat the villain with him having nowhere to escape, thus for a 2 player game, it seems that we have to essentially defeat 2 henchmen, closing the locations, then when we go to beat the 3rd, he switches, and so does that mean he will escape to the 4th location if we defeat him, like, does he start using the normal rules of villains once he switches with the henchmen and goes into the deck?

Yeah. I put Ghlorofaex by the scenario and then one henchman in each location.

And yeah, he when you close a location he basically does this:

Before the encounter, randomly select an occupied location. Each character at that location must attempt a Dexterity or Acrobatics 14 check. Characters who succeed are dealt 2 Electricity damage; characters who fail are dealt 1d4+1 Electricity damage.

And yes, that is the goal. For 2 players, when you encounter the 3rd henchman, stop. Don't attempt to defeat him. Instead, replace him with Ghlorofaex. You could win right there if someone can close the other location. Otherwise, he'll flee and you'll have to get him at the fourth location.

Setup here isn't technically correct. If we were doing it today, we would say Villain: None, change the first sentence to "After building location decks, place the villain Ghlorofaex faceup next to this card," and add the sentence "To win the scenario, defeat Ghlorofaex."

But this card already has what may be the tiniest art box on any card, and that added text would add at least one line, if not two.

I'm guessing that should be "corner and defeat Ghlorofaex."

Yep—"defeat and corner," though, since that's the order in which those things actually happen. FAQ updated.
