Advices about how to roleplay a Gnome raised by an Orc?

Silver Crusade

Hello fellows,
I'm going to play Kay, a young Gnome almost killed when newborn, along with his family, by an evil witch (or cleric, or oracle) devoted to Ymeri, elemental lord embodying the destructive side of fire. Tarkus, an inquisitor Orc, in the name of Atreia, the fallen lord personifying the creating side of fire, was tracking the witch, but he was too late. Instead of the witch, he found the little Gnome under the ashes, and took the newborn with him. Kay was then raised as an Orc, worshiping the good side of fire, until the age of 12, even if Gnomes become adult when 40. Tarkus then returned to his lone quest, and now Kay is alone, thinking of himself as a grown-up Orc (he knows that he's not PHYSICALLY an Orc, btw).

Kay's parents were living in a forest in the north, establishing a strong connection with that land. When the witch came (why, it's another story), the spirits of cold decided to save the child, merging with him.

Kay: CG, Dual Cursed Winter Oracle (Curses: Blackened, Haunted), with a dip in Cross-blooded Sorcerer (Orc and Draconic[Brass Dragon]).

I think it largerly depends on who the Orc is, based on the background, I'm inferring that the Orc is rather unusual and as a neutral or good alignment. Given the unusual nature of the Orc, it might be useful to write up the personalities, views, and other characteristics of this Orc, before evaluating how a person raised by the Orc would act.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The general Gnome mindset is that everyone has more in common than not in common. So, from a Gnomish point of view, it's hard to not be "normal". A Gnome that thinks he is an Orc wouldn't be considered much different than a Gnome that thinks he's a Gnome from the viewpoint of the average Gnome.

Bravo. The fact I had to read it twice to ensure I understood it meant it was a perfect description of a gnomish mentality.

The Exchange

I think he might becpme a barbarian or bloodrager(elemental bloodline fire/draconic (red)). Afterall, I'm sure he's realized that he's no where as strong as his mentor, and needs to get stronger. So. Yarrrrghhh!

If he goes draconic bloodline, enter into dragon disciple.

Kay would have had an interesting childhood; perchance the Orc Inquisitor is a peer/associate of Imrijka ^_^? An Inquisitor raising a crippled and prophesied Gnome, definitely got Karma points from the Deity on that one.

If he is CG despite his horrendous afflictions and past, I would imagine that he will never Bleach. Either through sarcasm or just shining hope/shenanigans. Double points if he is bright yellow or some neon red shade, or even the hottest flame of them all: the blue/ultraviolet.

Orcs can be very direct. Since he is aware he is not his Daddy's peer in physical prowess, but gifted with the burning, he'd just go down da otha proppa Orky path.

Brawl? Burn em. Obstacle? Burn it. Dispute? Burn the disputed item and see if they still wanna fight over the ashes. Tedium? Something or someone out there warrants some burning, get moving. Fire cleanses everything, and Papa Orc raised a tidy Gnome.

The Gnome need to keep new experiences would have been auto-fulfilled during his adolescence just from what he survived, and he probably had a Young Indiana Jones type of experience just being the ward of an Inquisitor. So, instead of trying and snorting everything, this Gnome would just happily chase his mystery and every revelation unlocked is but a waypoint for him as he goes through his fiery rebirth as an Orc.

Gnomes can get pyromaniac as a trait IIRC, but Kay does not need to be manically obsessed with it, its just his arcane/divine gifted number one tool in the box.

Desna may not know what to do with him, but I could see Cayden Cailean saying wassup as he began adventuring and visit him disguised in a tavern as he started adventuring. HE doesn't care about the fire thing, but sees the valiant rebel/vigilante inside (plus, it is a pretty quirky CG concept, Cay-Cay would deem it worthy of a drunken foray). Plus, what's alcoholic shenanigans without collateral damage that Orcs AND gnomes are so fond of/responsible for? Sarenrae may take an interest in Kay, but that's pushing the Fire domain aspect he won't have access to.

Just remembered you said he was 12... well Cay may just pass him some other malt beverage like Golarion's expy version of Malta Goya lol.

TL,DR: Optimistically/arrogantly facing the world as a proud warrior, and fire is just a reflection of the strength inside. "Cuz Green Daddy said so, wanna fight about it?"

A very angry ankle biter.

Silver Crusade

I'd play him as stoic, fierce, ingenious and forceful.

He might over-compensate at times (wearing primitive Orc cultural clothes, carrying a great axe at all times, being rude to elves, etc). He might also be keen on highlighting injustices done to the Orc people (Why do the PC races have all the good land?).

Aternatively he could be a controversial radical seeking to raise consciousness and demand equal rites for his people - think Malcolm X in need of a stepladder.

He could even demand to be treated as an Orc even if that prejudices him.

This is just my tuppence's worth.

No offense, but were I your GM, you wouldn't be able to play the character at age 12, simply because you physically are a gnome. Adulthood for gnomes comes at age 40; youth (as per the Young Characters doc is age 20, and you're barely more than half that age. I would personally modify (or require the modification) the character's back-story so that he was with the orc who saved him until the latter's death at a natural ancient age of 55-60, at which point the gnome is just reaching adulthood.

That said, blurbage:

Orcs are aggressive, callous, and domineering. Bullies by nature, they respect strength and power as the highest virtues.

Nurture being in this case somewhat emphasized over nature, your gnome is likely to be very pushy. He might be abrasive, or he might be joshing/playful, but he's most likely to be a very in-your-face and because-I-said-so sort of individual. That might be difficult considering the strength issue, but since he's got more than a few tricks of Power in his back pocket, it might not be that much of a problem. I would suggest a high, even very high, charisma that gets played as aggressiveness; as an oracle, I think you might have that already ...
