Scarab Sages

I've been a big fan of Dr. Fate for many years now, and was excited when they first announced the new series. Now they're about 5 or so issues in, and I've got a mixed bag of impressions.....

There are things I love about the new Fate - his Egyptian bloodline, with the whole "descended from the Pharaohs" is really a nice touch. And I like that they are giving him a (limited so far) medical background.

I also like that they're using the Egyptian gods to start things off. Although, I'd love if they eventually brought in the Lords of Order and Chaos.

My big problem so far - the story is just dragging. I mean, come on! How many issues can we see Khalid being agonized/confused/reluctant about taking on the Fate mantle, then dealing with some problem caused by the endless rain/flooding. And, Anubis, while a compelling villain, gets boring after awhile.

Also, Khalid, get a real costume.

I think it goes back to my overall problem with comics these days: The business model seems to be a standard storyline taking at least 6-8 issues to resolve, all the better to accommodate collecting and repackaging it later for those who don't want to buy single issues. Although, I'm also beginning to wonder of today's younger writer's even have what it takes to tell a story in a single issue. It sucks that they never seem to get a chance.

Either way, if it keeps going like it has been, I don't see it lasting long.

Scarab Sages

This one is still going, but kind of slow. And, as per usual these days, they are still dragging on this "fight against Set" story. GET ON WITH IT!!!

But, hey, I did see a preview of a future cover where it looks like he's wearing the more traditional Fate outfit.

Seriously, Fate. Come with your best violence. Set is ready.

Scarab Sages

My bad. It was Anubis.

Issue #8 - right after getting hit by falling stone......

...."Gotta learn how to protect myself. Maybe a force shield like in Pathfinder?"

Awesomesauce!!

He said that?!??!

Scarab Sages

He did!

I GOTTA GET ISSUE NUMBER 8!!!!!!

Scarab Sages

It's a fun series, so far. I just wish they'd give him the more traditional costume. Or at least some version of it.

And have shorter story arcs - but that's my general criticism of comics.

Scarab Sages

Of course, I also keep hoping they'll bring back the Lords of Order and Chaos. And Wotan. Fate's Tower......

Yes, he is a DC character. The new Fate is a young American of Egyptian descent. He's just starting medical school, so I'm guessing the intended age is mid-20s. Seems like they made a reference to the Pathfinder RPG. At least that's how I interpreted it.

If DC is plugging Pathfinder... coolness... although it makes me uncomfortable to know some of my choices and allegiances can be considered... cool.

Maybe 'comics plugging' is like the negotiations equivalent of foreplay when a certain brand recognizes goodness in another brand... an attempt to make the animals go into 'love mode' by extending some comic-based produce... ;)

Now, let's see how long a Marvel title takes before plugging Pathfinder... :)

"You did what?"
"I plugged Pathfinder too!"
"But... you did it with our freaggin' AVENGERS title, man!!! they'll think we're coming on too strong..."
"Hmmm... maybe you're right... but DC may have tried to look too cool by just mentioning them in passage in an obscure mini-series... I mean, sure, everyone likes a one night stand with the mysterious looking stranger in the corner, but y'all know they all come back to honest dependable up-front Honest Joe 'cause he can pay the bills.. and.."
"Shut up!"

Scarab Sages

I'm still enjoying this series, but the constant sidebar text conversations with the chick supporting characters is getting annoying.

And he still needs a real costume.

Sovereign Court

let me know when it's over and I'll glance at the whole thing when it comes out as a graphic novel

So they're ditching the whole Nabuu Lord of Order who essentially posessess anyone who wears the helmet angle?

For those of you who don't remember, Nabuu is the kind of Lord of Order who really makes you want to root for Chaos.

Scarab Sages

Nabu is still around, but now as a spirit who guides the wearer. There hasn't been mention of the Lords of Chaos and Lords of Order (one of the black marks against the series). As for Nabu being bad/good/a dick - depends on the writer. I've liked him sometimes. Other times he's been a jackass.

nabu is an ass. I'm glad he got downgraded.

I know this wasn't a question, but I'll still give my standard answer...It depends. Mostly on who's writing him. There have been times when he's written as not a complete douchebag.

Scarab Sages

Still enjoying this series. And now they've brought in Khalid's great uncle....Kent Nelson. Could get interesting. Maybe we could even see....gasp....a real costume!

I also am a long time Dr. Fate fan. This is the only racial change to a comics character that I approve of in that it at least makes sense. I just wish he would stop with the "Gee am I crazy? Should I even try to use powers?" crisis that should have resolved within the first three issues.

He needs a costume. And yes, I'll just say this: the art in the book is horrible. It is the worst major comics art I have ever seen frankly. It looks like something a sixth grader would do in art class. The penciller should be fired for an actual artist.

Scarab Sages

Even though I've seen scheduled release dates for issues 17 and 18, it seems like they've ended the latest series with issue 16. Good.

Although I still enjoyed it, it was getting kind of stale. And the art was starting to turn me off. Plus, maybe now Khalid can go out and find a real costume.
