Magus spellstrike

Rules Questions

Spellstrike (Su): At 2nd level, whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of "touch" from the magus spell list, he can deliver the spell through any weapon he is wielding as part of a melee attack. Instead of the free melee touch attack normally allowed to deliver the spell, a magus can make one free melee attack with his weapon (at his highest base attack bonus) as part of casting this spell. If successful, this melee attack deals its normal damage as well as the effects of the spell. If the magus makes this attack in concert with spell combat, this melee attack takes all the penalties accrued by spell combat melee attacks. This attack uses the weapon's critical range (20, 19–20, or 18–20 and modified by the keen weapon property or similar effects), but the spell effect only deals ×2 damage on a successful critical hit, while the weapon damage uses its own critical modifier.

I see magi trying to use this with any magus spell, including web and bladed dash. Am I missing something or or do those not work because the magus spell has to have a range of touch?

Spellstrike only works with touch-range spells - you are correct.

I've never seen anyone try to use those spells with spellstrike - spell combat is a different story, of course.

AHHH ok. Thats what i was missing.

So someone could use spell combat to THWACK and bladded dash or bladed dash then thwack ? (but NOT bladed dash thwack thwack) ?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Correct. Of course, bladed dash comes with its own attack, so it ends up ahead anyway... especially since it's used as part of a full attack. It's essentially the magus's "pounce" spell. ^_^

Since spell combat allows a full attack before or after the spell being cast, and since Bladed Dash allows an attack as part of the spell effect, then yes, you could at 4th level when they get the spell do Bladed Dash thwack thwack.

What Spellstrike does is allows to to get your weapon and spell damage in the same attack, rather than just spell damage.

What Spell Combat does is allow you to full attack and cast a spell in the same round.

Since touch spells give a free attack as part of casting, this gives the Magus one extra attack if they perform spell combat and then spell strike with a weapon.

You can also do something like attack, 5' step back, web. You aren't getting an extra weapon attack, but somethings battlefield control is better than damage.
