Interest Check for Various Game Ideas

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 51 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Greetings, Paizo forumgoers! I'm posting here because I'm interested in running a game online here for some folks. I know I haven't always had the greatest track record with games in the past for various reasons--over the summer a game I recruited for fell through because of my own half-baked idea (fueled admittedly by finally marathoning Firefly and wanting to do a sci-fi game) as much as my feeling that the players weren't fully committed. The fact I was using a less well-known, older system that most folks didn't have access to didn't help either.

But this time around I've got plans for different things, ideas for what I can run and how I can do them, and I'm looking at actually using game systems that people know and can access. Assuming people are interested, they would need to be able to play the game I'd be using, whether that means prior experience or being able to access the game through the Internet or however.

That said, I'm hoping that there'll be some interest on here, and that's all this thread is for: interest. I won't post any hard rules on character creation just yet, but I'll mention some general ideas on systems and houserules. No need to post character concepts, definitely don't give me builds and expect me to look at them just yet, although if you want to discuss concepts you have based on a game idea, you can let me know. I'll be taking "votes" to some extent on deciding what to run, mainly because I'd want it to be something people are interested in.

So without further ado, let me give you a few details on ideas I have for games I'd like to run, and you can respond with what you'd be interested in doing, if anything!

Game 1: Jade Regent:
This is probably one of my favorite APs from Paizo, and it's the only one I have all 6 books for in hard copy. It's got a lot of great themes and stuff going on, and while I'll admit I don't love every individual nuance and detail, it's a lot of fun. I've started in in real life with a couple groups, hashed out a strange idea online here, and planned out a number of different paths and changes for it. That said, I've made a few change ideas over time, and the game would likely include a number of alterations to the exact story and encounters going on. I also plan on including at least limited gestalt or something of that nature, with the exact power level depending on what kind of game we want to play.

There are also a few subset variations of Jade Regent I could be interested in doing:

1: Vanilla. This would be a fairly normal version of Jade Regent, with a few substitutions of characters and events based on my own preferences. For the most part, though, the plot of the game would be fairly close to normal.

2: Jade Inheritance: In this version of the Adventure Path, the Oni have taken Minkai and been really consolidating their power in the region, and the PCs are much more closely linked to this from the beginning. At least one PC is actually a scion of an Imperial family, the heir to the throne. The family fled from the country to avoid the Oni takeover, seeking to avoid massacre at the hands of the fiends. Now the scion of the family and their friends and retainers must come out of hiding, quest to grow strong and build support with their allies, and take back the throne.

This could be done one of two ways: with the entire game taking place in Tian Xia, exploring a lot of tropes of wuxia and martial arts style stories; or starting in Varisia as normal, and exploring more of the journey trope and following more of the normal string of events. Not to say that events wouldn't be used in Tian Xia, because they would be adapted and used there, but it would have a very different flavor to it.

Either way, I'd be open to using plenty of thematic 3rd-party options for this AP, and would actively be using some of them to rebuild enemies. To give an idea, I have the Heroes of the East supplements from Little Red Goblin Games, and I'm a big fan of Dreamscarred Press (especially Path of War).

Game 2: Horror:
I've had a bit of a kick to run a horror game for a while now, and I've done a fair amount of planning out ideas, thinking about settings, and what I'd want to do with it. That said, this is fairly open-ended and I have no completely set plans on what system to use or what kind of setting. It could be anything from dark, gothic medieval, to Victorian or even Western (with or without elements of steampunk), to modern, or even futuristic or science-fictiony. The overall themes would revolve around a number of horror elements, and the tone would definitely be fairly dark, although not necessarily hopeless. As far as systems go I'd want something that isn't TOO filled with minutiae and fits the overall tone I'm looking for; World of Darkness would be a strong contender, at least for some settings, but I'm open to ideas as well.

Like I said, this one is fairly open-ended, but I've got plans and ideas, as I've been thinking about it for a long time. The main hope is that it would be pretty sandboxy and player-driven, although I'd have plotlines going on.

3: Shadowrun:
This is basically what it sounds like. I enjoy Shadowrun. It's a lot of fun, it's a neat system that fills a niche I haven't really seen in any other games I know of, and it can be very different than the usual fare you see in a lot of RPG groups and on these forums. It's been mentioned before to me by some folks that Shadowrun games are really scarce here, so I'd be happy to do one up with folks. We'd be using 4th Edition with a few houserules here and there.

4: And Now for Something Completely Different:
Basically whatever you'd want to play. Shoot suggestions at me, let me know what you're interested in doing. I won't run EVERYTHING or anything, I'll definitely shoot down suggestions of things I don't really want to run or don't feel I have the experience or talents to do well. And please don't ask me about Adventure Paths, because frankly I don't own the books for most of them and I'm nowhere near prepared to run any but Jade Regent or maybe Rise of the Runelords.

As far as this option goes, shout out anything else, though. System, genre, themes, whatever. Even just voice a character you really want to play and see if it sparks an idea or lines up with something other folks want to do. I've been playing and DMing for a long time so I'm comfortable with a lot.

I think that's about everything. Just let me know what ideas sound good to you, what you'd want to do. I'll keep an eye on this thread for a week or two, or until it seems like we have a strong consensus of folks who want to do something in particular. I'll then open an actual recruitment thread for that game, with "bonus points" for people who've posted here and then apply. If not, whatever, but let me know! And yes, this will be PbP here on these boards.

I'd be interested in doing something like this. I like the horror option best, maybe a steampunk feel ...

I haven't seen Horror run well as a PbP, that doesn't mean its not possible, but its hard to build and maintain the appropriate tension over days and weeks of posting.

Running Shadowrun as PbP would reduce a lot of the inherent weakness in the system (long planing times, often out of character, and hacker working in a totally different world as everyone else). I still think it would be fairly boring playing a hacker. I haven't played Shadowrun since 3rd ed but could be tempted.

Jade Regent has always had some appeal. I don't know much about Tian Xia so would prefer playing a foreigner traveling there and learning about it with the character.

I would love to be in a Jade Regent game. The one I was in died before we got to third level. I love what little I saw of the story though.

I'd be interested in Shadowrun, if you're willing to have a newbie to the system.

Grand Lodge

I'd be in for Shadowrun. I got the core book and a couple of the others(aresenal and augmentation). I've played it a few times and like the system.

Ooh, Shadowrun! I love Shadowrun, and especially 4th edition.

I wouldn't mind Jade Reagent at all.

Actually, I've looked at Jade Reagent, and it looks pretty cool

Looks like we've got a neat split between Shadowrun and Jade Regent going on... And honestly, I wouldn't be averse to running both, being that they aren't too time-consuming or difficult to run individually, and they're pretty different so it wouldn't get confusing or anything.

Let me ask this, though: Those who are interested in Jade Regent, which variation (if any) would you be interested in playing? I did put a few options in the first post, so knowing which people are shooting for would be helpful.

I prefer Vanilla, if only because I haven't gotten to play it at all before.

2) Jade Inheritance, all the way.

Having a PC be the Heir makes it way more interesting. Having an Heir NPC makes the game feel like a glorified escort quest.

I actually have a character idea that ties really well into that concept, not as the heir, but as a sort of samurai-chewbacca bodyguard to the heir. I guess that concept works no matter which version we go with, but I'd prefer to have that relationship with another PC rather than an NPC.

Jade Inheritance sounds amazing.

Honestly, I'd be down with any of these, and would love to play, but for Jade Regent I have an idea that would be fun to go with, of a disgraced former spymaster, who is called back into service by old ties.

I'd be happy playing the heir if no one else wanted to, but I'd need to bone up on that part of Golarion (I've got the PDFs, but have yet to skim them).

A little late but I'd be down for Shadowrun - the only issue would be that I've never actually played. I have the 5th edition rules and have wanted to play just never got around to it.

Dark Archive

I'd love to play either Jade Regent (either version) or a Shadowrun game.

Hello!
I am interested in playing the Shadowrun OR the Jade Regent thingy, whichever (if any) has still slots.
I've played the Dawn of the Artifacts campaign for SR4, though never seen anything about JR (though I'm heading on right now!). That means I'd be more enthusiastic to try something new, but also a bit more lost at the beginning. Though I'm a fan of L5R, if that counts! :p

I've never played Jade Regent before, always liked the sound of it.

I think Shadow run sounds fun! I'd really be up for anything, as long as you don't mind that I have no experience with online play

So, what are your ideas on Shadowrun? Starting runners? A more seasoned team? Gang war? Corporate headhunters? Something completely different?

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I don't suppose any of these games might be run using 5E, would they?

Wow, more interest on the way. Looks like there's some interest leaning towards Jade Inheritance, but I'll let it open for now. A few notes in response to some posts, though...

Doomed Hero wrote:

I feel the same way, honestly, which is part of why I like the idea of reworking it to focus on the PCs. Not only does it play into another archetypal mythical story of the lost scion reclaiming their throne, but it also puts more power and agency into the party's hands, rather than trying to defend an NPC who ends up being pushed to the sidelines for most of the game.

Sach wrote:

No worries about not having played much before, as long as you can access the rules and you build a character I like and am interested in seeing! As a note, though, we'll be using 4th Edition, not 5th, as I don't have the books for that version of the game (and from what I've heard, I think I'd prefer 4th anyway).

Jereru wrote:

Well, this is only an interest thread, so there aren't even any slots open yet, let alone filled.

Greply wrote:

That's no problem, in and of itself. I'm happy to welcome new players, as long as they make good characters and can commit to the game.

Philo Pharynx wrote:

That's something I'm not set on. I know how I'll start the game, and it'll probably be fairly episodic at first--you're hired to do a run, you do it, that kind of thing. It'll definitely work into a plot though, if only due to the players drawing connections and working on things.

Jiggy wrote:

I briefly considered doing a Jade Regent game in 5E, but I think I'd stick with Pathfinder for that. If the horror game were in a gothic medieval setting I might well go 5E for it, though, assuming I ended up running it (which I probably will at some point, just maybe not now).

I actually created a character back when I got first interested in Pathfinder and it was actually Jade Regent that got me hooked. I like the idea of being an inheritor as it actually fits my character who is a kitsune who was raised by a Taldan family and later moved to Sandpoint where he developed a crush on Ameiko while growing up. It would make sense to have it start in Varisia. So I'm interested.

Gothic horror/Lovecraft fusion sounds amazing right now.

So, doing some tallying, it looks like so far we've got these results...

Jade Regent currently has the most people interested, with 9 results. Of these, 3 people have specifically referenced my Jade Inheritance concept, and 1 vote has requested the Normal Adventure Path.

Shortly behind in popularity is Shadowrun, with 8 people expressing interest.

And coming up behind is the Horror game idea, with 2 votes of interest.

I think I'll leave this up through the coming weekend and see if there's any more interest, but at this point I'd be looking at opening recruitment for Jade Inheritance and/or Shadowrun. I'd still love to do a horror game at some point, but I'd put it off until later and reopen interest and recruitment at that point.

Until then, keep posting interest and such, and now I'd say spitball some character concepts my way (spoilered, please) if you want to see some of my initial thoughts.

Sure thing!

Derric the Taldan-raised Kitsune Cavalier:

Derric is a strange sight: a walking humanoid fox dreaming of knighthood. Maybe if things had gone differently the day he was born he would have been given a proper Kitsune name and even grow up not stumbling asking what he was. For the day he was born the Oni struck forcing him and his family to flee just moments after he was born. His family were kitsune servants working for an Imperial family but they also were scions of that family as well. His father knowing that they would not be able to escape dare not let his son share that same fate. Opening a portal, Derric's parents sent him through knowing that he would be safe as they stood their ground against the Oni and their servants. They died bravely. Derric was found by a Taldan merchant family who adopted and raised him. They later moved to Sandpoint to help improve the family's trading business. It was there that Derric met and was befriended by a young Ameiko. It was she who accepted him for who he was not what he looked like, as Derric refused to shapechange into a human form choosing to always appear in his natural form. It was she who gave him the courage to make his own decisions. As they grew up together the kitsune fell in love with her but chose not to tell her of his feelings as he feared it would destroy their friendship. Now a grown man (well kitsune man if you will) he still lives in Sandpoint choosing to stay after his parents return to Taldor. He hopes to one day tell Ameiko of his feelings but until that day comes, he's happy to have her as his best friend. She also got him his first horse: Blaze.

Tell me what you think please!

Character concepts:

Jade Regent/Inheritance:

Ysmero is a Nagaji unchainedmonk from an ancient order dedicated to protect the true rulers of Minkai. He was born in Sandpoint, long after the remaining members of his order had followed their rulers in to exile, and has only been given the vaguest of reasons to protect the family. Despite his unusual appearance, he considers himself culturally Varisian and is a very amiable young man. Although skeptical of his responsibility to protect Ameiko/To-be-named-PC he is well disciplined and will do his job when the time comes. That they are both friends and rivals only enhances his conviction to protect the rightful ruler of Minkai.

Alternatively, if it takes place entirely in Tian Xia his order could have survived in secret over the years, and he is given instruction to seek out and protect the PC until they can claim their inheritance. I could change the race, but I felt like Nagaji were thematically appropriate.

Shadowrun:

Currently I'm thinking a Dwarf that fits along the same role as the Street Shaman. An awakened character that feels strong roots and even a kinship with the slums and beggars of his home city. He takes on runs more as a way to amuse himself than to acquire wealth, but taking a stab at the richer citizens of the world is an occasional benefit.

Obviously these are both rough concepts, and can/will be fleshed out better once the settings are more concrete, let me know what you like/don't like/think needs work!

For SR, I have in mind an Irish Troll, Melee Adept, who's been a victim of experiments by an evil corp (sorry about being redundant :P). Fun to swing a claymore around :P

For the JR, idk, cause I'm probably using the zen archer concept in another game and wouldn't want to play the same PC twice. I'd have to think about a background, but I'd probably play a sorcerer or cleric.

I'd be really interested how you'd do wuxia in pathfinder by the by. :)

If you ran a Shadowrun game, I would go with something straightforward for a new player- maybe an Ork enforcer/wheelman with gang connections?

I'd be especially interested in Shadowrun, personally. It would be fun to do Jade Regent, but playing something non-PF would be a good change of pace.

shadowrun:
I have a couple of concepts I want to play, but one I want to play a whole lot. She's new in town and goes by a few different names. Victoria is an elf who acts as the face of the party. She has excellent social-fu and a touch of magical skills as a backup. She is very good at information extraction as well as delicate negotiations.

When the action happens, Victoria is gone and Glass appears. Glass is extremely stealthy. While she's not good at putting the hurt on people, she is good at distracting/confusing/disarming the enemy. She stays hidden and interferes with the opposition while our team takes them down.

Oh, there's a little more that I will PM.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

SCKnightHero1:
Alright, so while I like some of the elements of the character you're suggesting, a lot of it seems a little forced and contrived. Although the idea of fate plays into this AP quite a bit, and I do want to use it to some extent, it seems a little bit stretched that the kitsune was born on the same day the oni attacked (which they didn't exactly, but that can be altered a little bit when I give you guys the exact story of what the family knows happened)]; his parents decided to teleport just him to the other side of the world, assuming he'd be safe; a random merchant happened to find him and take him in despite his strange appearance (that would probably be fairly monstrous to someone in Avistan); and that family happened to move to Sandpoint. Do you know what I mean?

However, I could easily see this concept working a LOT better in my Jade Inheritance version of events, which is part of why I want to do that--not only does it give the players more agency, it also makes Eastern-flavored concepts more viable without crazy plot twists and jumps. I could easily see the character traveling with the Imperial family to Varisia when they fled the country, whether his family came along or not, and since then he's been raised knowing he will someday continue the legacy of defending the Imperial family and help their scion take back the Jade Throne.

Xynen:
I think your concept works pretty well, especially in the context of doing Jade Inheritance. The only thing I'd change is that he may not have been born in Sandpoint, as I'm thinking of setting a timeline such that the PC who is the destined ruler was alive when the oni takeover occurred--very young, quite possibly even an infant, but they had been born.

As for a Dwarf Street Shaman, that seems pretty fitting and interesting to me.

Twigs wrote:

Well to start, everyone's a monk. Honestly, though, that's something I'd do: everyone gets monk class features as a sort of limited gestalt. Probably also include free style feats or maneuvers from Path of War somewhere along the line.

Philo Pharynx: Gonna reply to you through PM, since you gave me more details there.

for a SR campaign i would offer an elven shooter

I'm breathless with anticipation.

Alright, I'll reconsider his age/birthplace/etc if/when there's official recruitment and I have a bit more info on your changes to the AP.

Doomed Hero here.

This is my concept for a Jade Regent character. Hulking, honor bound, Oni samurai bodyguard, at your service.

I haven't had the chance to play Jade Regent... but I would sure as heck love to give it a try!

I actually have a concept I've wanted to try with Jade Regent I think would be funny/awesome. A kobold with the aquatic bloodline who traces his lineage back to an imperial water dragon that used to serve as family guardian for the Kaijitsu family long ago. Now, he's looking to reattain his heritage and travels all the way to Sandpoint to find the last of the Kaijitsu family so he can become the family guardian.

As I said I'd be pretty new to Shadowrun...so I'd proably shoot for something more or less straight forward...but being a Hacker sort of character seeemed interesting.

Jade Regent certainly sounds intriguing.

Okay, I've refigured Glass without the part from the PM. I'm ready to go.

Grand Lodge

I am most certainly casting my vote for Jade Regent. Either variation suits me just fine as both sound very exciting!

Character Concepts:
A Bleached Gnome Wizard (Scrollmaster) Illusionist who uses origami and paper to produce her effects. All her spells are flavored in a paper theme. If she were to start in Sandpoint, then her personal mission would be to search for something that respark her color and fervor for life. Traveling to a new land and learning more about the art of folding paper would be a potential way of accomplishing this. And of course joining the caravan would lending a hand would be the easiest way to accomplish this. If we started in Tian Xia it would be pretty much the same.

The second idea would be a zealot gaijin ronin who went a little mad when he lost his Master after the Oni gained control of the country and seeks a new one. Upon finding the heir to the throne, he would vow to protect them and start a sort of cult around them. Spreading the myth about their power and creating urban legends of their immortality to strengthen their position. This would also include indoctrinating people, while ferverently dispatching the opposition. A focus on charisma(leadership?) and violence, this character is a stealth attempt at playing a Warboy from Mad Max Fury Road(but a little dialed down). He could work in either game, at Sand Point he would be the offspring of a banished Ronin or just the Ronin himself if it took place in Tian Xia. Probably go Cavalier, Samurai, or Warlord(Broken Blade all the way)

I would be interested in the Jade Regent/Inheritance as well. :)

A concept I've had for this is a Tian who is from a merchant family and is in Sandpoint to look into new trade opportunities. The reason he was sent however, is that his father was involved in something political and knew assassins were coming to quiet him and his family. By sending his son to Sandpoint, he feels he will be safely out of the way.

As a build, I'm thinking Samurai multiclassed with one or two levels of Ranger to represent some of the training in wilderness he's had....

Jade Regent and Shadowrun have my votes. :)

Shadow Lodge

Jade Inheritance: I'd play an Ancestor Oracle who knows the prophecy behind the True Emperor of Minkai, and help guide them to their rightful place.

Shadowrun: I'd like to play an old-hand ex-company man who became super skilled before ending up SINless. Human, no magic, just crochety ol' experience keeping him safe after all these years.

So when are the games going up?

Thank you for the feedback GM.

Sadly I can't go that route as part of his background is that he grew up with Ameiko as a childhood friend and later crush. She was always there for him growing up and it was this that caused him to fall for her. Being Taldan raised also fits in as his family were once a family of knights before becoming a merchant family. Derric is supposed to be the oddity of his kind so that when he arrives in the Dragon Empires people are going to be "what the heck!?" Even other kitsunes will be puzzled and confused by his behavior.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't posted in a bit, but glad to see there's still interest! I'm hoping to finish up Jade Inheritance campaign traits and prep work and get up the Recruitment post up later today. I might hold off on Shadowrun for a little bit and do that Recruitment after I've finished up Jade, for my own sanity, but rest assured both games will get under way soon! I'll also get back to people about their concepts in those threads rather than here, so make sure to repost!

Dark Archive

Good to know, will keep my eyes out for recruitment!

I'm excited. I've wanted to play Jade Regent for what feels like forever. I'll be watching the recruitment page like a hawk today.

Oh, I'm so ready for Shadowrun. It's been years since I've had a chance.

Just as a teaser, here's the appearance for Veronica/Felicia/Glass.

Appearance:

Her appearance varies quite a bit depending on which role she is playing.

As Veronica, the agent for the group, she comes dressed for the boardroom. A well tailored dark grey suit and heels seems to fit more on the Johnson side than the runner side. He white hair is pulled back into a bun, secured and sprayed to keep all variables under control. Oversized sunglasses are part of the uniform, hiding her eyes from those who might try to read her. She strides with confidence, and there's a palpable feeling of Head B&$%& In Charge coming from her.

As Felicia, few would accept that this is the same elf. Felicia is a club girl, loose and breezy in a tight little dress. Her white hair flies loose - literally flies as it seems to drift around her without regard to anything as mundane as gravity. Only the music moves it as she dances. Likewise, gleaming sparkles seem to drift out of her eyes, floating for a bit before evaporating. While those draw the eye, her presence keeps people gaze locked on her.

As Glass, very few even see her. She conceals herself magically on the job. To those she trusts, she wears a very utilitarian jumpsuit. Unlike her other appearances, this has nothing to do with fashion. A visored helmet covers her, along with gloves that keep any bit of skin from showing.
