Orange Prism (Ioun Stone)

Cracked: Wearer adds one cantrip or orison (determined when the stone is created) to his list of spells known or spells prepared. Price: 1,000 gp.

Question, can a non-caster (Investigator) use one of these to learn a cantrip such as read or detect magic?

Trying to avoid buying wands...

I think no as there is no list of spells known to add to.

Think of it this way, even if you add it to your list of spell known, you don't have any 0 level spell slots to prepare it in.

As a GM, if you wanted to spend a level 1+ extract slot to cast a 0 level spell I guess I'd probably allow that.

But in general, no. I don't think this works.

I would strongly recommend purchasing a cloak of the hedge wizard.

Adding a cantrip or orison when you don't cast spells works the same as adding a cantrip when you cast orisons and adding an orison when you cast cantrips. Specifically, in all 3 situations you can't cast the spell.

You could makes a slotted magic item that lets you use a particular 0 level spell on command potentially for as little as 900 gold if you use minimum caster level. If you absolutely must have a slotless item it'll cost you 1800
