Upgrade your WotR Tokens to Premium

Homebrew and House Rules

When I am feeling happy, I have the best ideas ...

When it comes to WotR tokens, well what you gonna do to protect these from extensive game play? Well, you bought the Broken Token Insert and sleeve your cards with the Ultra Pro Pathfinder sleeves ... You want more protection and more premium feeling?

We have have two options for the cardboard tokens to make them PREMIUM...
A mythic charge has no cardboard hardpaper feeling, right?

1) The expensive option
Like the premium plunder die project, we could do as a community the following:
Create our own custom mythic charge coin - pure metal - several options (colour print of the mythic blast from token possible) are available.
See HERE..
What do you think?
We can all elaborate on the design and share the costs. The more coins we print, the cheaper it will be. Anyway, still expensive... But super cool mythic charges...

2) The super cheap option
But still cool - not super cool - but just a few bucks.
To protect and upgrade the cheap cardboard token feeling, you could buy
COIN CAPSULES (10-pieces pack for just 1.50USD). These plastic capsules are available in different diameter sizes, measure the token diameter and you are ready to upgrade them.
See HERE.

What do you think? Interested? Unnecessary?

Unnecessary.

I turned to a local craft store, Michaels. In the floral section, there's glass filler: here. My players love these little things.

[NOTE: Way back when, we used these things for tracking MtG life before countdown dice were invented and back when we'd end up with lots more than 20 life.]

I question the need for them to be coins, would other materials be in consideration as well? For example, you could get polished stones or glass beads shaped in such a way that they don't roll around, but have cool-looking designs.

EDIT: See Theryon's link for what I was thinking of when I said "glass beads" -- I just couldn't remember what they were called. If you want something more designed than that (like having an actual pattern in them similar to the cardboard mythic charges), that could be an option although I have no idea who would custom-make such a thing or for how much.

IMO, the original blast pic from the cardboard token should be appear on the custom premium token again. So it is recognizable among 1000 other token as PACG mythic charge token.

But any idea is welcome...

Yup this is what we're using... Amazing how simple decorative glass can give grown men stupid grins...

Yeah, they work well and are cheap and we disliked the cardboard originals.

[Note: Remember, Myfly, mythic charges are native to Wrath of the Righteous. And we're already past the halfway point. Investing in an expensive replacement is a bit silly at this point.]

Unnecessary. I'm perfectly happy with cardboard tokens. If I wanted something different, glass beads would be my next choice.

I use the same stones that Theryon linked to (different color though). I've got a ton in various colors from tracking various counters in MTG,

My group also settled on the glass beads many others have mentioned. We've had no complaints. :]

Glass beads look good and have a reasonable price. However, I would like to have the original mythic blast image included in the game.

I like it. Thus I will go with the coin capsules... Cheap, awesome, cool coin inside :-)

@Mike: please continue to produce coin-shaped tokens for the next adventure paths....

I was unable to find any places that do custom glass beads in the sense where there is some sort of design/pattern/thing inside the glass itself. I found places that engrave/print patterns on the top of the beads but they charge astronomical prices for doing so ($2 USD per bead for a small order of 100-150 or so). Stickers could be another option, you could print out small window stickers with the pattern to stick to the bottom side of the bead, and the bead's translucency will hopefully enhance the pattern printed on the sticker. I feel that will likely be much more economical than printing directly on the beads (you'd source the beads themselves from a local crafts store, and just order the sticker sheets). The main issue with stickers is that bead sizes are not consistent so the end result may not look as nice.

Overall, I don't think I'd go with anything customized myself given the costs involved to make it actually look good rather than slapdash; and there are numerous non-customized options already on the market for quite cheap that it does not make sense to put in a custom order for them.

Well, there are 50 tokens in each box.

So you and me together would have 100 tokens to produce, so that would be the minimum quantity REQUIRED for production...
I would say, my Kickstarter project got funded... ;-)

What do you think about the coin capsules?

My IDEA with the use of coin capsules:
How about putting the original token in a plastic coin capsule. This is cheap = 7.50USD for all 50 tokens.
BUT create a second round shaped coin token of the same size as the original token, print it, cut it out and put it inside the coin capsule as some sort of paste-up for the original token inside.
So if you turn the coin capsule, you have on the one side the original mythic blast token visible and on the other side the newly created coin image.

What do WE print on the other "coin side" of the mythic charge?
Here are my IDEAS:
1)
In this WAY, you would have a mythic charge-meter right besides your playmat.
Use the original mythic side for "mystic-charge-ready" and the other side "mystic-charge-exhausted". That is the most likely answer. I like the mystic-charge-meter. It is easy to create.
2)
We could introduce a NEW custom-made game element!
Now it is your turn...
When you obtain a mythic charge, take one random token from the token pile (all token in the pile are original side up, so you dont see our new side), place it besides your playmat. Use the mythic charge whenever you like, the turn the mythic charge token upside (original blast image)-down. NOW you see our newly created coin side for the first time.
On this coin side, you could generate an AFTER EFFECT of your mythic-charge-use...
Well, we could introduce, bad, neutral and good effects. So WE have to create 50 effects for all mythic-charge-coins.

Question: What kind of 50 AFTER-EFFECTS?
2A) well, with your charge use you could
- (1) burn your hands from the mythic-blast. 1d4-2 damage
- (2) enlighten yourself: next WISDOM check +1
- (3) your mythic blast is seen by an ally, he joins you for 1 action, draw a random ally, display, action, discard.
- (4) no after effect
- (5) cool is this, the mythic charge FAILS! You drew a blank mythic charge. Damn!
- (6) bad is, your enemy absorbs the mythic energy to cast a random spell at you, or to clone himself ;-) (fight twice, worst case)
- (7) or the best, the mythic charge is ONCE auto-recharged - you may use this token TWICE...
- (8) mythic blast also hits the blessings pile, discard one blessing card
- (ETC) now it is your time to become creative... Post the after effects in this format:
"(counter/number) after effect", so start with (9) in the next post.

2B) The twins are crying. More ideas next time. Please come up with more custom side uses.

SUMMARY:
The coin capsule use for the tokens
- protects the tokens like a sleeve for the cards
- introduces one new custom side of the mythic token coin
- custom side: either a mythic-charge-meter (50 exhausted round-shape prints EASY)
- custom side: or 50 random AFTER EFFECTS of mythic charge USE (VERY COOL)

The latter would increase the game depth and would introduce a new custom element to the game...

Best
Myfly

PS: All mentioned above, you cant do it with your glass beads :-p

Scarab Sages

No thanks. I AM PERFECT, WHOLE, AND COMPLETE, JUST AS I AM.

I will say I like your #1 idea, and thought of something similar when I first saw the tokens. Some games use small tracker boards with a column of number, and you just move a marker up and down as the number changes (think Pandemic's outbreak tracker for an idea). The problem is though, as much as I'd rather have 6 of those boards, it would be more expensive to produce than a bunch of punch out circles with the same basic art on all of them.

As for "you can't do it with your glass beads", #1 is the only one I want to even do something similar to, so not being able to do any of #2 means nothing to me ;)

Pathfinder ACG Developer

Way back in the day when I was buying all the Cheapass Games and we were doing a weekly rotation to try them all, I bought glass beads in like 8-10 different colors, so I almost always have a bunch in my dice bag and more available on demand. They've served me well for ~15 years so far. :)

Anybody helping me to get a super cool list of 50 AFTER EFFECTS from the mythic charge use?
How about 20 good, 20 neutral and 10 bad?

From a BGG user:

How about these?

(9) mythic blast is so bright that you could foresee the next card at your location deck. Just take a glimpse

(10) like a blessing. Discardto explore one location

(11) uncurse an item

(12) light heal d4-2: energy sparks from the mythic blast seal your wounds

(13) +1 to close location, keep it, use it, discard

(14) mythic blast banishes the next card of the location deck unless it is the villain, loose one card whatever it is

(15) good: recharges 1 blessing to the blessings pile.

(16) mythicblast is so strong that it pushes you to a random other location

(17) bad mythic energy: summons a random monster from the base set

(18) mythic energy for a weapon in use. Put this token on your weapon in play to add +2 ONCE for your next combat. Then discard.

(19) mythic energy for armour: as weapon, +2 armour

(20) mythic pick: heal one card of your choice

(21) bad: mythic blast starts ball lightning: all players discard one card

My BGG reply

Energy sparks to items, weapons and armours is a good idea.
Therefore I would add

(22) mythic arrow: place token on your actual ranged weapon. Next shot is +2. Ooh this is the similar as (18), but more detailed.

(23) mythic potion: consume actual potion in hand, mythic energy: potion card stays in your hand for second consumption

(24) mythic energy shatters all your potions in your hand: uuuh bad. Glass is not unbreakable ;-) by mythic energy

(25) mythic blessing power: put token on blessing pile unless a matching blessing effect is used (hand & blessing pile). Get twice the blessings effect and of course recharge it.

HALF TIME!

Mythic is soooo coool. Best adventure path ever!

We need 25 more or even more to choose the best from them...
Please help!
