Does it matter when you back the project for the monster submission?
Confirming what Marc said: back any time before the project ends. We'll have at least 1 or 2 more monster design posts from Steve Winter before then as well.
And yeah, it's been piling on the backers at a furious clip. We're so close to the 1,000 backer level!

WOW!!!!
The Tome of Monsters Kickstarter has now reached more than 1,000 backers and $80,000! That's just awesome!
340 monsters!!!
16 lairs and 16 full-size maps now
Accepting 10 backer monster submissions (instead of 5) for the book
And there's still 18 days to go!
Marc Radle |
We're past the $85,000 threshold! That adds digital tokens for ALL monsters (340 or so ... and counting!) for all backers.
And, the next goals, $90,000 and 1,250 backers, are both well within sight, and they are both very cool! 5 MORE monsters added (including Baba Yaga's Knight) and 5 more lairs and battle maps (which would make the Book of Lairs 96 pages with 20 battle maps!)
Oh ... you didn't hear this from me, but there just might be a pretty cool announcement or two on the horizon ... might be worth keeping a close eye on the Kickstarter :)
Marc Radle |
We are happy to announce that Smiteworks LLC is bringing the Tome of Beasts and the Book of Lairs to the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop!
There are a number of different ways you can take advantage of this and they all include multiple items for use in Fantasy Grounds: art, stats, and tokens for Tome of Beasts; and 16 high-resolution maps, lair write-ups, and the lair set of tokens for Book of Lairs.
We couldn’t be more excited to see Smiteworks bringing the Tome of Beasts and Book of Lairs to a platform that so many 5e fans have adopted as their virtual tabletop of choice.
Pop over and get all the details
In other news (I always wanted to say that! :) be sure to listen to Wolfgang's interview over at Geek Nation. It's about 8 minutes in if you want to get right to it!

PRINTED PAWNS!!!
Good question! These are stand up pawns, very much like Paizo's (awesome) pawns. They will be printed on high quality, heavy cardstock and should look absolutely fantastic!

Totally speculative mockup of the pawns is available here.

It's definitely getting pretty crazy! Be sure to keep spreading the word on social media etc - the more backers, the crazier things get!

Wow! Quite a lot has gone down over on the Tome of Beasts kickstarter in the last few days!!
1,399 Backers
$113,739 Pledged
with 9 Days Still To Go!
BattleBards Audio Stretch Goal Announced!
If we reach $126,032, a Villain Codex gets added!
And I've lost count on how many monsters are in the Tome now ... at least 340 and counting!
Why not join the fun and back the Tome of Beasts Kickstarter today!!!

I am really happy that you make the cardboard pawns! Amazing.
There was some discussion in comments on ks, but I didn't see a definitive answer. Maybe you can help:
What do I have to do to get a second set of the cardboard pawns? Has this been decided yet? How much to add to the pledge for a second set?
Marc Radle |
Some additional clarification regarding the printed pawns:
ALL backers of the Tome hardcover get the printed pawns as one of their rewards.
For additional pawns or for backers who currently have only digital rewards, the pawns will also be offered during the survey stage after the Kickstarter.
Backers can bump up their pledge total now if they want (pricing per pawn set should be about $40 or so) to help unlock more stretch goals ...
Or, backers can just wait for the survey after the Kickstarter has ended and order pawns then.
Hope that helps!
ALSO, New Update out: Update #15 with info on the Lethal Lairs contest and a very cool new art preview!

Great. Thanks for the info.
Btw did you remove shipping costs? I previously pledged 206 (special edition + fantasy grounds + shipping), but now, it seems that shipping is included?
At least that's what Kickstarter is telling me when I tried to raise the pledge..

If you moved up to the free shipping tiers, then yes, it is included.
If you are still in the same reward tier but with an add-on, then well, the shipping costs should be the same (they haven't gotten any cheaper for us, though we'd love that!).

For the backer submissions, is it just the creature's main concepts and the team develops it and makes it come to life? Or its a full design contest and by "develop it" you mean polishing it towards a final product?
I now backers who didn't submit because they understood it was the later, and didn't know how to design the stats for one.
It's baffling that there is no elaboration of it in the main page of the Kickstarter.
Marc Radle |
Hey there raphaelus! First post! Welcome to the Paizo forums!
Monster submissions will actually not open until sometime after the Kickstarter ends, at which time I'm sure full details will be provided! At this point, it's just cool to know that EVERY backer will get the chance to submit if they want!
As to your specific question, I'm guessing there will be a fair amount of latitude given - so if someone is really good at complete monster design, great! If some one has a cool concept but isn't as comfortable with the nuts and bolts, I suspect that will be ok too :)

May I ask who did the art for the blob of many different eyes and the blue alligator? More art by them! The Marcelo Mercado ones are great too.

Of course, glad to help!
I'd have to check on the specific artists, but suffice it to say we have top-notch artists on this project and the art is just awesome!

Final 2 Hours!!!
Sound the alarms, beat the social media drums!!!
2,215 backers and counting!!!
$182,841!!!
Prepared Encounters PDF now added to the loot backers will receive
If we can get to 2,300 backers, a Mystery Goal is revealed
If we can get to $190,000, the Temple of the Deep Ones lair and map gets added to the Book of Lairs.
If we can get to 2,500 backers, 5 Eldrich and Demonic maps and lairs get added.
With 2 hours left, these are still very doable - spread the word! Every new backer, even backers joining for a $1, gets us closer to those backer goals!

Correct, the monster submission guidelines will be posted later this week (by the 10th); entries are due by the 23rd. The goal is very much to design as excellent and complete a creature as possible, with interesting story/lore elements, a great name, and complete and compelling 5E statistics.
Now, a cool concept could win a slot in the book if it is so super-cool that the judges and voters rate it more highly than something with complete stats, but having a complete design obviously gives a monster a bit of an edge.
All that said, way more details will be posted on the Kickstarter.

As promised ...
Tome of Beasts Monster Submission Requirements!
For those of the 2,312 backers who'd like to see if their monster design might be one of the 20 printed in the book - time to get to work! :)
The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM Pacific time on Saturday, November 21!
Marc Radle |
I missed this one before it closed. Any way to get am order in?
Hey there Ellestil!
Do you mean an order for the main, physical items: The Tome of Beasts, Book of Lairs and/or the 300 printed pawns for example ... or do you mean get in on the Kickstarter itself (with all the cool PDF extras, ability to submit a monster for possible inclusion in the Tome of Beasts etc)?
Wolfgang Baur Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge |

Kickstarter locks up their systems tight when a project closes, so there's no way to get in directly and submit a monster.
Indirectly, though, you'll be able to jump in when we send out the BackerKit survey and preorder link in late January.

I didn't know that 5e's license allows for 3rd party content. That's nice to find out.
I do think I will pick a hardcover copy of this up when it releases. Provided I can find a place to order it from, what with my no-credit-card situation and living in europe.
There is no 5E licence, but in the same way you can use the OGL and avoiding trade dress to make a version of 0,1,2,3,4E D&D (and everything around and in between!) you can use it to create something 5E compatible.
